AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM: Greatest Collection Ever of Contemporary Art - Baltimore, MD
We visited this amazing art museum on MLK Jr. day which was the only day of the year it is open for free to the public. There are so many vibrant and interesting works that you could spend almost an entire day there. Most of the pieces were done by artists with mental illness which makes it much more fascinating than your average art museum. We also checked out the amazing gift shop which might be the best gift shop in the country and I'd say this is one of the best art museums in the country as well. If you're in Baltimore on a trip or just nearby you can't miss out on this place!

American Visionary Art Museum
Located in Baltimore, Maryland, The American Visionary Art Museum specializes in the preservation and display of outsider art. It has been designated by Congress as America's national museum for self-taught art.
The museum has no staff curators, preferring to use guest curators for its shows. The museum's founder, Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, takes pride in the fact that AVAM is pretty un-museumy Enjoy -Joseph

Most museums, urban museums, are like fortresses. They say 'stay out, we have valuable things inside.' We wanted to be an extension of Federal Hill Park, right behind us, and be more like a wonderland.
In 1984 Rebecca Alban Hoffberger had the idea for a new museum and education center that would emphasize intuitive creative invention, and five years later the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) was born.

Visionary Farts at the American Visionary Art Museum
A visit to the new flatulence exhibit at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Bob Benson and Doug Roberts explore the history, culture and humor of farts and demonstrate the Magic Farting Post, the centerpiece of this small special exhibition, located in the popular museum's basement, ingeniously placed between the bottom floor ladies' and men's restrooms.
Mirror artist Bob Benson designed and created this exhibit as well as the Universal Tree of Life, which glitters and sparkles outside of AVAM. The multi-talented Benson has had a lifelong career in the arts with organizations from the Baltimore Symphony to the Maryland State Arts Council. Once known as the voice of classical music on Baltimore radio, Benson reviews classical music and opera recordings on his website Classical CD Review. Doug Roberts is a professional actor and voiceover artist who has appeared in forty feature films and had dialogue with ten Academy Award winners. Doug has won two regional EMMY's and has been featured in 100 plays and 5,000 radio and television commercials. For thirty years Doug has been the voice of the Babe Ruth Museum.
