Asheville, NC - Bele Chere 2011 Featuring The Whigs - The Pennie Tour
Bele Chere 2011 -- Asheville North Carolina's largest street partyl! Over 30,000 people attended the 33rd annual festival in downtown Asheville. The Pennie Tour visited the festival once again and found lots of fun people, interesting sites, and some great bands!
Bele Chere comes from the old Scottish dialect meaning beautiful living. Pennie Tour once again enjoyed beautiful living by experiencing Bele Chere's art, food, drum circle, street performers, street vendors and our favorite -- the bands! The hard part was picking which music venue. There were 4 stages to choose from -- situated throughout downtown Asheville and all within walking distance! Over 40 Bands played continuously throughout the day and into the night!
A Pennie Tour favorite -- The Whigs -- put on a fantastic show! The Whigs are a trio of artists that tout themselves as being an American garage rock band. The Whigs, from Athens, Georgia were named one of the 10 artists to watch by Rolling Stone in 2006.
Bele Chere offers a unique opportunity to see, taste, hear and experience the finest that Asheville, North Carolina has to offer. The local restaurants offer a Foodtopia farm to table experience. No time for sitting - choose from the many food booths -- several from surrounding Asheville restaurants.
Where's the beer? Once you purchase a $2 wristband, you can walk around with your beer on the streets that are designated for Bele Chere. FYI -- Asheville holds the title for theBeer City award -- with many different top-notch craft beers to enjoy! No two Aheville beers are the same -- My personal favorite -- Highland Gaelic Ale.
A popular Asheville slogan is a perfect way to enjoy Bele Chere -- any way you like it

North Carolina: Biltmore Estate
Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet (16,622.8 m2) of floor space (135,280 square feet of living area). Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age mansions.
In the 1880s, at the height of the Gilded Age, George Washington Vanderbilt II began to make regular visits with his mother, Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt, to the Asheville area. He loved the scenery and climate so much that he decided to build his own summer house in the area, which he called his little mountain escape. His older brothers and sisters had built luxurious summer houses in places such as Newport, Rhode Island, and Hyde Park, New York. Vanderbilt named his estate Biltmore, derived from De Bilt, Vanderbilt's ancestors' place of origin in the Netherlands, and More, Anglo-Saxon for open, rolling land. Vanderbilt bought almost 700 parcels of land, including over 50 farms and at least five cemeteries; a portion of the estate was once the community of Shiloh. A spokesperson for the estate said in 2017 that archives show much of the land was in very poor condition, and many of the farmers and other landowners were glad to sell.
Construction of the house began in 1889. George Vanderbilt opened his opulent estate on Christmas Eve of 1895.
In an attempt to bolster the estate's financial situation during the Great Depression, Cornelia and her husband opened Biltmore to the public in March 1930 at the request of the City of Asheville, which hoped the attraction would revitalize the area with tourism.
After the divorce of the Cecils in 1934, Cornelia left the estate never to return; however, John Cecil maintained his residence in the Bachelors' Wing until his death in 1954. Their eldest son, George Henry Vanderbilt Cecil, occupied rooms in the wing until 1956. At that point Biltmore House ceased to be a family residence and continued to be operated as a historic house museum.
The Biltmore Company is privately held. Of the 4,306.86 acres that make up Biltmore Estate.
Vanderbilt commissioned prominent New York architect Richard Morris Hunt, who had previously designed houses for various Vanderbilt family members, to design the house in the Châteauesque style. Hunt used French Renaissance chateaus as inspiration.
The Banquet Hall is the largest room in the house, measuring 42 feet wide and 72 feet long, with a 70-foot-high barrel-vaulted ceiling. The table could seat 64 guests surrounded by rare Flemish tapestries and a triple fireplace that spans one end of the hall. On the opposite end of the hall is an organ gallery that houses a 1916 Skinner pipe organ. Left unfinished with bare brick walls, the Music Room was not completed and opened to the public until 1976. It showcases a mantle designed by Hunt, and a large engraving by Albrecht Dürer called the Triumphal Arch commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. The mantle had been stored in the stable for over 80 years.
The basement level featured activity rooms including an indoor 70,000-gallon (265,000-litre and 265-cubic meter) heated swimming pool with underwater lighting, a bowling alley, and a gymnasium with once state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The service hub of the house is also found in the largest basement in the US, as the location for the main kitchen, pastry kitchen, rotisserie kitchen, walk-in refrigerators that provided an early form of mechanical refrigeration, the servants' dining hall, laundry rooms and additional bedrooms for staff.
There is an Italian formal garden, a walled garden, a shrub and rose garden, fountains, and a conservatory with individual rooms for palms and orchids. There was also a bowling green, an outdoor tea room, and a terrace to incorporate the European statuary that Vanderbilt had brought back from his travels. At the opposite end of the Esplanade is the Rampe Douce, a graduated stairway zigzagging along a rough-cut limestone wall that leads to the grassy slope known as the Vista, topped with a statue of Diana, the goddess of the hunt.

Culinary Tour Through North Carolina
Every state has its own unique culinary signature, and, like handwriting, some signatures are ugly scrawls and some are absolutely beautiful calligraphic masterpieces. North Carolina is one of the latter. Between the state's farms and seashores, there's a ton of really excellent North Carolinian food that ends up being shipped around the world. But food is always best when it's enjoyed locally.
Chef Clark Barlowe of Heirloom in Charlotte uses that diverse selection of local foods to his advantage: He changes up his menu almost constantly based on what he's getting from his local farmers, which put Heirloom onto Open Table's Top 100 Restaurants for Foodies List. Meanwhile, over in Durham, Bull City Burger and Brewery is creating a new type of beer called a Durhamer, in an attempt to make a distinctive regional beer much as German towns did centuries ago. And in Lenoir, the Atlantic Caviar & Sturgeon Company is setting a new global standard for the world's fanciest food.
It's just not that often you get a state with this excellent of a flavor profile.

BHTV: The Buzz about Bee City USA in Asheville, NC
Asheville has long been known as Beer City USA, but did you know we’re also Bee City USA? Cities and towns across the country have made commitments to pollinators and become certified as Bee City USA affiliates.
BHTV: Bee City USA and Other Pollinators of WNC:
BHTV: Traditional and Urban Beekeeping in WNC:
Asheville has long been known as Beer City USA, but did you know we're also Bee City USA? In 2012, Asheville became the first to accept the title and responsibility of being an official bee city, launching a national movement. This commitment to creating more sustainable habitats for bees and other pollinators is echoed throughout Western North Carolina. From local beekeepers in the rural areas to urban gardeners in its cities, our community values its local environment and is working hard to protect it.
“Bee City USA is a program that started three years ago now, in 2012, right here in Asheville, North Carolina to get people involved in enhancing pollinator habitat,” says Phyllis Stiles, director of Bee City USA. “Most people have heard that honeybees are in trouble, that's pretty big headline news. In addition to that, there are hundreds of thousands of other species of animals around the world that enable 85% of the species in the world to reproduce. So Bee City USA was formed right here in Asheville to try to raise awareness and register certified cities in the cause of helping pollinators.”
“When we started in 2012, we started with one and we waited,” says Stiles. “And in 2014 in August, a little town called Talent, Oregon contacted me and said they'd like to be a Bee City USA. Since that time, 10 others have gone through the application process and now there're 12 in 5 states across the country and I'm in conversations with about 60 others. So the requests just keep coming and coming and it was especially exciting when neighboring Hendersonville voted on May 7th to become a Bee City USA. So it's growing!”
“We're doing all kinds of education with kids,” says Stiles. “In fact, one of the things that we frequently do at festivals, to which we're invited a great deal, is we make antennae and put them on kids and we even have adults ask us to make them antennae. So we just try to educate people about pollinators and to make new friends for pollinators.”
“This community is amazing!” says Stiles. “If Asheville had not said yes, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Somebody had to be the first, and so Asheville had the courage to be the first, and we'll be forever be grateful for that. The reception has been tremendous. This has been the best place to launch the program I can imagine.”
Cities and towns across the country are invited to follow Asheville's example. Make these commitments to pollinators and become certified as Bee City USA affiliates. For more information visit BeeCityUSA.org.
