Civil War Virginia: Will Prince William Co. Flip Flop On 2nd Amendment?
Prince William County WAS the 59th County to support the 2nd amendment of the Constitution. Will the new elected officials uphold the rights of their citizenry? It is not sounding like that will be the case.

A Family Tradition at Captain Pell's | Out and About: Virginia
In 1987, my friend Kelly began eating Maryland blue crabs at Captain Pell's Fairfax Crabhouse. Today, the restaurant is still being run by the children of the original owner, and they are experts in both seafood and family tradition. Kelly and her family flew to Virginia to show me what it's all about, and I can easily say that it was an entertaining and heartwarming experience.

Virginia
Which U.S. state has about the same population figures as Austria? Find out in the latest addition to our state video series: Judy Friedberg from the Management Section presents her home state. #50states #VA
Transcript:
Hi, I'm Judy Friedberg and I am happy to tell you about my home state of Virginia.
Officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, this mid-Atlantic state is
bordered by Washington, DC, Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina. And,
to the East, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean border Virginia's Eastern
Shore, another peninsula of Virginia land.
More than eight million people live in Virginia. Our state flower is actually a
flowering tree -- the dogwood. Our state bird is the cardinal.
Much of our state's natural beauty is protected by National Parks. My favorite is
Great Falls Park which highlights a rushing section of the Potomac River, which
flows to the Bay from the mountains in the west. Those mountains are also known
as The Blue Ridge Mountains, due to the coloring of the trees and shadows,
particularly in the early morning and early evening light.
Much of this area is included in Shenandoah National Park. Within the park is a
portion of the beautiful Appalachian Trail -- a rigorous hiking trail which extends
from Georgia to Maine. In the autumn, the leaves are at their most colorful.
Skyline Drive runs through the park. This is a fantastic way to see the beauty of the
mountains and the Shenandoah Valley from the comfort of your car.
The Shenandoah Valley is known for dairy farms and wineries. Virginia's farming
history also includes tobacco and cotton.
Virginia's nicknames refer to its rich history. The Old Dominion refers to its status
as one of the original 13 colonies. Virginia's other nickname is The Mother of
Presidents. Eight U.S. presidents were born here - more than any other state.
Some of their homes are open to the public as historic sites.
Mount Vernon, home of our first President, George Washington, sits high on a bluff
overlooking the Potomac River, not far from Washington, DC.
Monticello, home of our third President and drafter of our Declaration of
Independence, Thomas Jefferson, is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The
University of Virginia, which Jefferson founded, is nearby.
But, back to some much earlier history...Native people, including the Powhatan,
Algonquin, and Iroquois, were already living in the area long before the English
settlers came. Some say the name Virginia was the settlers' way of honoring Queen
Elizabeth the First of England, who was also known as The Virgin Queen.
You may have heard of the story of Pocahontas? She was a native of the area and a
friend to the English settlers of the colony's first capitol, Jamestown, in 1616.
Williamsburg served as the capitol of the Colony of Virginia from the early 1700s
and was the center of political activity leading to the American Revolution.
Both Jamestown and Williamsburg have active historic centers where you can learn
more about colonial life.
Richmond became the state capital in 1780 and remains so today. In 1861, after ten
states seceded from the United States, Richmond became the capital of the shortlived
Confederate States of America.
After the Civil War ended, and these states re-entered the Union, Richmond
developed into a railroad crossroads for the region. These strong railroads helped
develop trade routes between the middle of the country and the Atlantic Ocean and
led to the founding of Newport News Shipbuilding which continues to produce
battleships and aircraft carriers. Nearby Hampton Roads is the largest naval base on
the east coast.
Virginia is also home to the world's largest office building, The Pentagon,
headquarters of the Defense Department.
Other Virginia coastal attractions are historic lighthouses including Cape Henry,
Fort Monroe and Assateague. Assateague is also the home of the Chincoteague wild
ponies. And, if you visit there perhaps you will order some delicious Chesapeake
Bay blue crab and a beer for your dinner.
Today, media, technology, software, communications, and consulting are the fastest growing sectors of Virginia's economy. The education sector, particularly Virginia's
200-plus colleges and universities, and the government employment sector are also
growth areas. All of this and more, make Virginia the wealthiest of the southern
United States.
I hope you enjoyed hearing about Virginia today.

2018 Amtrak Cross Country Train Trip - Florida to Oregon
Taking the train cross country was something I'd always wanted to do. A bucket list trip. So, I booked a one way ticket to Florida, and traveled back home to Oregon on the rail.
My goal was to document the trip, but it's hard to capture the full experience.
I talked a lot about my trip on the Experiences You Should Have podcast:
I thought it would be helpful to answer some questions:
// What Music Did You Use? //
Andy White:
Gramatik:
AllttA:
// How much did the trip cost? //
The train ticket was $369, coach seats the whole trip. Sleeper cars can range anywhere from $200 to as much as $1,000 per leg of the trip, depending on the time of year.
// How long did it take, and what was the route? //
The train left Orlando, Florida on Monday evening, and it arrives in Portland, Oregon on Friday Morning. So 4 nights total. My trip was a bit farther as I had to go from Portland, Oregon to Chemult, Oregon, which arrived Friday evening.
Orlando---Washington DC---Chicago---Portland
// Were you on the train the entire time? //
No. There were two extended layovers - one in Washington DC for about 9 hours. There is a metro station at Union Station - so easy access to get anywhere you need to go. In Chicago, my layover was about 5.5 hours. Enough time to get out, see some sights and get some food. You can check your bags at the train stations as well, for about $10.
// What were some must have items on the train? //
Ear plugs. Eye mask. Those two in particular. Ear plugs to drown out the noise of other passengers, the noise of the train on the rails, the train horn. Crucial. Eye mask because there are lights in the train at night. It's dim like an airplane would be, but still lighting here and there.
Snacks. Tablet. Headphones. Chargers. Each seat has 2 110V outlets, and each of the tables in the observation cars do as well, so power is never an issue. Neck pillow. Blanket.
// You didn't mention the food. How was the food? //
I would say that train food is slightly better than airplane food. The menu in the dining car on all of the trains was the same - so it did get a bit old. For breakfast, prices ranged from $8 to $14, lunch $12-$15 and dinner $16-$25. There is also a snack bar that has candy, snacks, drinks (beer and wine), as well as some sandwiches and burgers. The service in the dining car was very good, and the staff were all very friendly. Traveling alone, meals in the dining car were always fun because you're typically paired with 1-3 strangers. So you're typically exchanging stories for around an hour. Here is a link to the dining page on Amtrak:
// Sleeping in coach. Was it that bad? //
I'd say, yes. If it were an overnight trip, not so bad. Even 2 nights. But by night 3 and 4 - it started to take a toll. The first 2 nights of the trip I had someone in the seat right next to me. That changes the experience quite a bit, as it's pretty close quarters. Having two seats to yourself makes a pretty big difference. Not in comfort as much as just feeling a bit of privacy. Comfort wise, it's just difficult to really get comfortable in those seats. There's not really any getting around that. Ear plugs and and eye mask are pretty invaluable.
// How were the bathrooms? Were there showers? //
The bathrooms were similar to an airplane bathroom. And there were plenty of bathrooms, so you never felt like you had to hurry, or had someone waiting for you. There was also a larger bathroom with a bit more space with a changing area. No showers. There are showers in the sleeper cars if you went that route.
// What about your belongings? Were they safe? //
I had a backpack with camera gear, tablet, headphones, chargers, etc. that I kept with me 90% of the time. Generally, I felt like my things would have been safe on my seat - but better safe than sorry. My carry on luggage (airplane overhead bin size) - I kept in storage racks on the bottom level of the train. In theory, anyone could have grabbed it and stepped off the train at their stop, but it made it with me the whole trip.

Tomorrows Bad Seeds - Tour with Sun Dried Vibes, Roots of a Rebellion, and Thicker Than Thieves
Hot on the heels of their show-stealing performance at this year's One Love Cali Reggae Festival, Tomorrows Bad Seeds have announced the dates for their upcoming Illuminate headlining Spring tour. The Hermosa Beach, CA reggae-rock outfit will be joined on the road by Sun Dried Vibes, Roots of a Rebellion, and Thicker Than Thieves for the months of April and May. A video teaser for the tour has been launched online at Tomorrows Bad Seeds will be touring in support of highly-anticipated full-length album Illuminate, due out in the Spring of 2018 via Mensch House Records (Common Kings, Sammy Johnson).
Hailing from the South Bay, Tomorrows Bad Seeds consists of Moises Juarez (lead-vocals), Matthew McEwan (vocals/guitar), Patrick Salmon (drums), and Andre Davis (bass). Since 2004, they’ve garnered critical acclaim and a strong worldwide fan base with their perfect mix of reggae, rock & pop. Tomorrows Bad Seeds prove to be extremely talented musicians, vocalists and entertainers as a whole. Their live show provides a high-energy performance that will have you craving more. Since the band’s inception, they have shared the stage with the likes of UB40, 311, Pennywise, Smashing Pumpkins, The Wailers, and Fishbone, to name a few.
The group’s new single “Frequency” is perfectly timed to drop around Valentine’s Day with the message of the “frequency of love.” The band breaks it down stating, “When the idea of the song ‘Frequency’ was written and recorded it was based on the idea of frequencies and the vibrational healing properties that they possess. Most popular music is recorded in the standard tuning of 440hz, not only did we record the song ‘Frequency’ in 432hz, where the A=432hz the alternative tuning of music that is mathematically consistent with the universe. A notable few that have recorded in this tuning, Prince, John Lennon, Robert Nesta Marley. The song itself was based on The Frequency of Love (528hz) and the vibrational healing properties it contains.” The track was produced with Chaz “Rox” Toney who also worked on most of the new album at the Island Empire Studio in Carson, CA.
