Around Town: Beaufort
Beaufort has seen a lot in its long, colorful life.
This coastal community, established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, is the third-oldest town in North Carolina (only Bath and Edenton are older). In the three centuries since its founding, pirates, freed slaves, fishermen, and a host of other travelers have all sought shelter in this quiet corner of Carteret County.
Today, some 4,000 people live there year-round; come summertime, this town swells with folks visiting from across the state and around the world.

Pritchard Island
Pritchard Island is owned by The University of South Carolina. It is a conservatory for turtles. Upon research, USC mentions a facility built on the island, but does not give the exact location of it. No mention of the facility being destroyed either. While walking on the other side of the island (not seen in the video) we noticed another structure further down the coastline, but did not walk to it in fear of being caught. We guessed this building was destroyed in 2004 by a hurricane and another facility was built and the USC never mentioned it.
Ruffin’ It – Episode 15: The Prettiest Place in the South
Centuries old, Spanish moss draped oak trees line the roads around the fine homes from the Civil War era in Beaufort, South Carolina. Islands, water ways, and adventure comprise this pretty southern town. Between the idyllic Hollywood movie locations, the shrimping boats, and friendly people, the place is a must see and excellent for pet travel.

Paddle Beautiful Beaufort 8 17 13
Weekend's paddling trip around Beaufort, SC August 17+18, 2013. Rain was forecast at 70% Saturday and 50% Sunday, but we only got hit by brief light sprinkles on Saturday while paddling. Typical South Carolina accuracy forecast, with us lucky. Thank goodness for local radar. Overcast skies were fantastic and made for a cool temp paddle, lower 80s that felt even lower on the water. We visited 2 historically reserved tabby ruins from the 1700's- Sam's Family Plantation and Fort Frederick. Wildlife included seeing dolphins, small sharks (one swimming under Anne's kayak bumping it, with the expected reaction), Ospreys carrying food to their nest, pelicans, storks, and numerous other birds. Paddling trips worth repeating, judging by all the smiles and thanks!
