Le Marais Neighborhood in Paris, France
The Marais literally means 'marsh' and that is exactly what this Parisian neighborhood was 1,000 years ago, writes Abby Gordon, an American expat and freelance writer based in Paris.
Before the area was drained into a fertile marshland, it was a swamp, and unfortunately the swamp-like odors remained centuries after the transformation. Narrow cobblestoned streets, exposed stone and beamed-buildings and slanted walls and rooflines are prevalent, a testament to the Marais's medieval history.
Today, the Marais is one of Paris's most trendy and desirable neighborhoods. It is the hub of the gay community in Paris. The Marais is also home to so many restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, many of which stay open on Sundays, an unusual phenomenon in France. Despite this modernization, the Marais still retains so much of the medieval character that was bulldozed in the 19th and 20th centuries for bigger and better structures in other parts of the City of Light—but not the medieval smell. Thankfully, the most prevalent smell these days emanates from the numerous seductive boulangeries (bakeries) and pâtisseries (pastry shops).

Planning a trip to Paris? Learn about the top neighborhoods to visit and what makes them special in this travel video. Tips include where to find interesting shops, bistros, and the best of Paris' bar scene.
The good news is that Paris is fairly compact and easy to navigate, so you’ll be able to do everything you want to, if you play your cards right. Ile de la Cité, which is actually one of two islands in the Seine
river, is the heart of Paris and its birthplace. Notre Dame Cathedral and many other attractions are here, so it’s often busy and crowded. Not too far away from Ile de la Cité, you’ll find Le Marais, which is the place to go for interesting shops, bistros, and the best of Paris’s bar scene. The other island in the Seine, Ile St-Louis, is the calmer of the two. Relax under the trees that line the streets here, and admire the beautifully preserved 17th-century architecture. One of the most popular neighborhoods to visit in Paris is the great hill Montmartre, once a haven for artists. You won’t find Picasso here anymore, but you will find the Sacré-Coeur Basilica at the top of the hill. The Latin Quarter is named for the Latin that was spoken in there after the Sorbonne university was founded in 1257. Today, it’s where Paris University is located, and is a great place for eating and people-watching. There’s a lot to explore in Paris, so come prepared with a reliable map to guide you through the neighborhoods.

Email: visites@streetartparis.fr
Take a graffiti walking tour with Street Art Paris to get up close and discover the finest street art and graffiti in the Belleville neighbourhood and learn all about the street artists who produce this work. During the tour, expect to discover as many as fifty different artists, as well as visit an underground gallery curated by an ancient artists collective, and have the chance - without any pressure - to buy some French Banksy, and visit the spiritual home of French graffiti culture, Rue Denoyez.
Belleville Park rises up to be the second highest point on land in Paris after Montmartre, with views across the city. Edith Piaf, was born close to here on the steps of her apartment building, it's said. A vibrant and friendly mix of North African Jews and Muslims, Sub-Saharan Africans, Paris' 'second' China Town, and a community of artists and musicians, to name but a few, welcome you to feel like you're a part of this extraordinary cultural and artistic community.
During the 19th Century the area laid witness to bloody battles for control of Paris, as part of the working class struggle to maintain the short-lived Marxist government, Paris Commune. The final clashes took place between the Communards and the Versailles Army, leading up to present day, Parc de Belleville, built in the 1980s on land that formerly housed a slum.

Paris, France: The Montmartre neighborhood
Montmartre is one of the most typical neighborhoods in Paris. located at the top of a hill, it was a refuge for artists in the late 19th and aeraly 20th centuries. Now is mainly a tourist attraction. The small houses and narrow streets give it the apperenace of a village, in deep contrast with the wide boulevards of the city centre. The most iconic feature in Montmartre is the church of the Sacred Heart (Basilique du Sacré-Coeur).

It's hard to miss the ultra-modern design of the Cinémathèque Francaise (51 rue de Bercy). In the Cinémathèque there is a cool museum on the history of cinema and a movie theater which host retrospectives on film legends, both past and present.
Continue walking through the gardens to the Cour Saint Emilion. Little known by tourists, the buildings of the Cour Saint Emilion were once warehouses for wine. The Cour Saint Emilion has been restored and converted into lively cafes and shops. At the end you'll find one of the largest movie complexes of Paris.
Of course, visiting Paris is great, but why not live like a local? Rent a furnished apartment or vacation rental from New York Habitat and live like a real Parisian for your next trip to Paris.

Paris, France - Video Tour of the Bastille Neighborhood (Part 1)
Hello and welcome for another video tour of a fantastic Paris neighborhood by New York Habitat ( ).
In this video we are going to have a look at the area around La Bastille, which is located in the southeast of Paris, just beside the Marais. With its real Parisian feel, the Bastille has all kinds of unique hidden treasures.
This will be the first of a three-part series on this fantastic neighborhood.
The Place de la Bastille is the area where The Bastille, a formidable fortress on the eastern gate of Paris, was built in the 1300s.
After the revolution, the prison was dismantled and many of its study blocks went to the building of the Concorde Bridge. While the prison no longer exists, La Place de la Bastille is much a part of Parisian life. It's quite the busy traffic circle, so be careful crossing it!
The French Revolutionaries had one thing in mind: to do things differently. In that spirit, you should skip the hotel for your next trip to Paris. Booking a vacation rental in Paris will put you in touch with the real Paris, giving you an authentic experience you wouldn't get otherwise.
Take a look at this fully furnished 1-bedroom loft apartment in Bastille ( ) is located in a building that was once part of a monastery. The apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen with the luxury of a dishwasher and also has access to a small private balcony.
With plentiful seating and sleeping areas, this furnished 2-bedroom apartment in Bastille ( is perfect for a Paris family getaway. This apartment includes a television with DVD payer, of course a fully equipped kitchen for home cooked meals and a dining table.
This furnished studio apartment in Bastille ( ) has the aesthetics of exposed wood beams and parquet wood floors. The kitchen includes a stove top with 2 burners, a microwave and a mini-refrigerator and is the perfect place to come and put your feet up after a long Paris day!
On the other side of the Place de la Bastille is the Opera Bastille. Its design, by Carlos Ott, is still controversial; however, its modern acoustics do the operatic performances presented here justice. You can often get last minute tickets if you show up around 6-6:30 pm at the ticket office, which is found on the right of the main entrance.
If you love contemporary art and antiques, make sure you check out the massive bi-annual Joel Garcia Antique and Contemporary Art Fair held at Place de la Bastille and on both sides of the place de l'Arsenal.
The area east of Place de la Bastille is known as the Faubourg Saint Antoine. All along rue de Faubourg Saint Antoine and rue de Charonne you can find alleyways lined with workshops and catch glimpses of 19th century Paris.
There are two particularly interesting areas off Faubourg Saint Antoine. The first one is Passage du Chantier where you'll find numerous hidden furniture shops.
The other is the quaint Cour de l'Etoile d'Or.
I hope you've enjoyed our tour of the Bastille district. If you want to further explore the City of Lights don't miss out on our videos of other Paris neighborhoods as this about Saint-Germain-des-Près ( ).
If we've missed any of your favorite Bastille Secrets, be sure to share them with us in the comments box below.
