My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a Draw My Life video that explains a lot here:
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I currently film almost exclusively with my Samsung Galaxy S8:
How do you get those shots where you're walking or running? - A Joby Gorillapod for smartphones, like this:
You drop your phone a lot, how does it survive? - THIS CASE IS AMAZING: (Galaxy S7) - (Galaxy S8) - (iPhone)
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:
But what are you doing there? - Living it up!
Do you speak French? Oui.
You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here:
Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos:
I don't trust this Patreon thing - what's your PayPal? - Here's a handy link!
I like PayPal in pink! - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game):
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one:
And here's the French one:
Can I come stay with you in Paris? - Have you seen my apartment? It's too small for me as it is!
OK, but how do I use the Metro when I'm there? - I made a handy video for you:

If you want to go to Versailles, I really think you should do a bike tour as you'll see so much more of Versailles than you would on foot. Versailles spans over 2,000 acres and is a full enough day without walking between locations on the grounds. A bike tour of Versailles is a great way to get around quickly and see as much of the sites as possible with a guide who knows how to get around. As disclosed in the video, I used to work for Bike About Tours and do get a referral (but only if you let them know when you book/get a sticker from them in Paris).

Bike About Tours - Paris
In April 2011, my wife and I went to Paris to celebrate our 11th anniversary. We found Bike About Tours through TripAdvisor.com and it was one of the best things we did in Paris. We loved every minute of the three hour bike tour through the City of Lights.
We met the tour group in front of Charlemagne's Statute in Notre Dame. From there it was a short walk to pick up the bicycles and we were off. As you can see from the video, the pace if very leisurely and we all stayed together as a group. When riding around the city, you do not feel threatened by the cars at all. Since we took the late morning tour, we stopped at a bakery to eat lunch and we continued on. We also took this tour on a Tuesday, when the Louvre is closed. This allowed us to ride our bicycles through the glass pyramid courtyard. That was a great experience.
Even thought the tour was great and offered lots of interesting information, one of the best parts of the tour was the end. We were given a list of all the interesting tidbits of Paris that you wouldn't normally find in tour maps. We spent hours, if not days, following up on the secrets and really enjoyed ourselves.

One of the best tourist activities you can do in Paris is to take a bike tour OF Paris. You see a lot really quickly, with less energy than walking, and have a fun time doing it (along with some great stories from some knowledgeable guides). Bike Tours in Versailles and the Importance of Travel
Traveling is one of those things that can't be so easily replaced in the curriculum of life. And that's about as much philosophy as I'm going to jump into in the description. Why do you travel? What has it taught you? Bike tours in Versailles are totally worth it - 100% recommended. I really think that taking a bike tour of Versailles before walking into the Chateau of Versailles is the best way to get the lay of the land and see as much of the grounds as possible within one day. Otherwise you need at least two, if not three days to really see Versailles on foot.
A Different View of the Gardens - Bike About Versailles Two
Head out to Versailles for a little peace and quiet - the picnics are lovely and the forest is green. I can't wait to spend more time touring Versailles by bike. Help me make more videos at and get caught up easier using this page here:
