Whitehead | County Antrim | Blackhead Lighthouse | Belfast Lough | Discover Northern Ireland
Whitehead is a beautiful seaside town in County Antrim on Northern Ireland's east coast looking out on the opening to Belfast Lough. it is situated about 14 miles from Belfast City between Carrickfergus and Larne.
Before the Plantation of Ulster WHitehead was known as Kinbaine, from the Irish Cionn Bán, meaning 'the white head'. Whitehead in Northern Ireland has a population of around 3,800 as of the 2011 census.
County Antrim's east coast gem, Whitehead offers beautiful coastal scenery overlooking the mouth of Belfast Lough. Whitehead offers a lovely family day out at the seaside, where you can go sailing, fishing or walking. There is much to see and do in Whitehead.
Whitehead is near to Blackhead Lighthouse. There is a coastal path that brings you from Whitehead and up to the lighthouse around the rocky coastline. The path runs northeast from the seaside town of Whitehead to and around Blackhead lighthouse. The path is lined with grassland and interesting wildlife and their habitats on one side and Belfast Lough opening out to views of Scotland on a clear day on the other side.
With a colourful seafront, Whitehead is a welcoming and charming town on Northern Ireland's east coast. Accessible via train Whitehead is home to the Whitehead Railway Museum. Officially opened in 2017, the museum combines past and present modes of transport from today's locomotive to the steam engines made in the 1800s. The exhibition is inclusive and informative and fully accessible via wheelchair.
Whitehead also has plenty of restaurants and eateries for all the family, plenty of coastal views and walks to breathe in the fresh, sea air and enjoy with all the family.

Is it a shag or a cormorant? Blackhead Lighthouse Walk
The sun is shinning. The sky is blue and we are back on one of our favourite walks. The Blackhead Lighthouse Coastal path just along from the promenade outside wonderful Whitehead.
The views are amazing and the wildlife is superb but you usually do need binoculars.
This is a large black seabird. Is it a cormorant or is it a shag? I honestly don't know the difference and do you know what? I'm not really bothered.
Seabirds in general are not my strongest point!
ps If you are down in whitehead call in on the old quirky tea house on the corner as you drive down on to the prom. Old photso, old memorabilia, olde worlde atmosphere and pretty young waitresses. The grub's not have bad either!

President of the Royal Town Planning Institute for the UK and Ireland
As part of an ongoing documentary, I was on the Whitehead seafront to film the arrival of John Acres, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He met with the Blackhead Path Preservation Society and I got a chance to find out what he thought of Whitehead and the closure of the Blackhead Path.

Landscape Story - Whitehead, Northern Ireland
I took the train to Whitehead to walk to the Blackhead Lighthouse. Unfortunately, the path was closed so I decided to stay in Whitehead. The beautiful January Sunday afternoon led to a nice landscape photograph. You can see it at the end of this clip. This video also gives you the feeling of being at the seaside in winter 2019. Hope you will enjoy it!

Fairy Glen Rostrevor Co.Down
The Fairy Glen in Rostrevor Co.Down provides for a relaxing walk alongside the Kilbroney river. The walk starts in the village of Rostrevor on the Kilkeel side of the bridge and the path follows the Kilbroney River upstream for approximately half a mile. There are various paths that lead away from the river into the Kilbroney Park. It is possible to walk to The Cloghmore Stone, a 40 tonne granite boulder which was deposited here at the end of the last ice age, some 10,000 years ago. It is a well known landmark in the locality. There are spectacular views over Carlingford from this point. A scenic forest drive from Kilbroney Park leads to a car park, where a short steep path will also take you to The Cloghmore Stone. At just over 1000ft, it is well worth the walk for the views alone. The names carved on the stone (J.G. Lover, M.E.& H.Fulton M.E.) have been of interest for quite some time, but erosion has left them virtually unreadable.
