Exploring The Appalachian Trail | North Carolina & Eastern Tennessee
After leaving Georgia at Bly Gap (mile 78), the Appalachian Trail climbs and descends through North Carolina for 96 miles, hits the Tennessee state line at Doe Knob (mile 174), then spends the next 292 miles criss-crossing between the two states. The AT follows this state line until reaching Virginia at mile 466.
The climbs become more significant through North Carolina and Tennessee, but many are designed with switchbacks to ease the pain. Hikers will get above 6,000 feet through the Smokies, meaning early spring NOBOs will likely experience seriously cold conditions in this rugged, scenic national park.
There are thousands of attractions on the Appalachian Trail that are worth seeing.
The Appalachian Trail begins, for most people, on Springer Mountain in the great State of Georgia. The AT ends 2,189 miles to the north at Mount Katahdin, just beyond the 100-Mile Wilderness in Maine.
What attractions on the Appalachian Trail you see will depend on how much time you have to dawdle.
If you don't have time to appreciate spectacular spots along the way, these links to attractions on the Appalachian Trail can help you decide where to visit when you do get a bit of free time.
It happens.
Until you can hit the Trail yourself or with loved ones, take a virtual tour of quaint towns, dandy restaurants, cool People of the Trail, fun festivals and spots that will beckon you onto America's Beloved Path.
Enjoy your time on the Appalachian Trail. From home or in any of the 14 states that are graced by the AT.
I'll take you there.

DuPont State Forest - North Carolina
The DuPont State Recreational Forest in Western North Carolina is filled with trails and stunning waterfalls. The 10,473 acre park was created in the late 1990's when the state of North Carolina purchased the land from the DuPont Chemical Company. The main attraction are the waterfalls most of which are an easy hike from public parking areas. The park is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the towns of Hendersonville and Brevard not far from Asheville. More information is available at
Crabtree Falls - Blue Ridge Parkway, NC
Short, beautiful hike at Crabtree Meadows Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Crabtree Falls. This is the first time I've visited the waterfall. I've seen plenty of beautiful pictures but wow this is a stunner in person. Big Crabtree Creek begins a long 30-foot slide before freefalling nearly 60 feet into a wide, narrow pool. I've seen many waterfalls in North Carolina and this is one of the best.

Live the Life You Choose: Biltmore Park in Asheville, NC:
“Asheville is a happening place,” says Kit Cramer, President and CEO of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. “It's exciting and fun. People who come to Asheville are looking for quality of life.
“People love to experience this area, and people are really learning a lot more about what Asheville has to offer in terms of arts, music, food, outdoor activities—all those types of things,” says Kramer. “They love the beauty of the natural environment, but they also love that they can access that very quickly. We're a cosmopolitan city in a small package. So you can quickly get to a hiking trail. Or if you wanna kayak or you wanna bike, you can easily get to those things. So, we've got big city amenities within a small package.
“Asheville is attractive to a pretty broad cross section of people,” says Kramer. “We're seeing a lot of young people, a lot of creative talent moving to town because of the vibe of the place. But there are also a lot of retirees who move to the area and people with families. So it's a pretty broad cross section of people coming from around the country to live here.
“Asheville is the hub of a whole region,” says Kramer. “People come from 10 counties around Asheville, into work each day, so if you're into a rural setting, you can do that and still be able to access work here in Asheville.
“Asheville has a mixture of neighborhoods,” says Kramer. “That's one of the things that makes it really cool. You can live right downtown, or you can live in a historic neighborhood. You could live in the River Arts District. There are lots of different styles of life in this particular community.
“I think we're gonna continue to see growth in Asheville and the region over time of business and opportunity for people who wanna move here,” says Kramer. “Plus, we're gonna continue to see a growth in terms of visitorship. And once they get introduced, they're really interested in coming back here—Perhaps making it a second home location or finding a way to relocate here full time. It's a great place to be.”

The town of Boone sits in Watauga County atop the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of
North Carolina. Serving as the county seat and market town, Boone is also home to
Appalachian State University. Our town gets its name from the famous pioneer and
explorer, Daniel Boone. The Town of Boone was incorporated in 1872 and now has reached
a population of 18,280 people. At 3,333 feet above sea level, Boone sits at the highest elevation
of any town its size east of the Mississippi!
Summertime in Boone usually consists of temperatures no hotter than 76°F. Noticeably
cooler than surrounding lowland areas, Boone may be just the place to escape the heat of a
Carolina Summer. Winters in Boone are also colder than most. The regular snowfall provides
perfect opportunities for wintry sports! Located off the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway,
Boone offers a four season playground for families and adventure seekers alike.
Just miles away from Grandfather Mountain, Boone is known as one of the best outdoor
adventure destinations in the Southeast. Boone boasts charming local businesses as well as a
progressive school system that has been consistently rated for it’s excellence. The strong sense
of community and natural beauty makes Boone stand out as one of the best places to visit and live.

Amazing Waterfalls In North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains
In this particular video we visit Catawba Falls, which is part of the Pisgah National Forest. For many years, while the falls were located on public land, visitor access to the falls was heavily restricted. The only access points to the falls was a trail that went through private property, and an access point off of Interstate 40. Use of either access point was illegal.
In 2005 and 2007, the US Forest Service purchased 88 acres of land at the end of Catawba River Road for a trailhead. In 2010, access to the falls was officially opened to the public. In 2012, a new parking area was built by the Forest Service. The Forest Service plans further improvements, including a foot bridge over a tricky crossing of the river along the trail and a new trail to the upper falls, bypassing a section considered steep and dangerous.... Beer City USA with kids - Asheville, NC
We decided to slow it down a little bit in Asheville and try to pretend we lived there. It was nice to relax and reset. Our days mostly revolved around food, because Asheville has an AMAZING restaurant scene. Every single meal we had was so, so good.
All the downtown buildings in Asheville are Art Deco style, which is my favorite architectural style. It's a beautiful little city.
I tried on mom jeans in multiple stores, settling on the ones at Target, where they have triple shopping carts. Perfect for us!
Asheville is hip and artsy, and it has more breweries per capita than any other city in America. That's why they call it beer city!
We tried to go to the pinball museum, but it was closed, so instead we wandered through the community gardens. We drove up the Blue Ridge Parkway and went on a hike at the tree identification trail. Then we went to the North Carolina Arboretum.
We went to the New Belgium Brewing Company, east coast headquarters. What a beautiful and relaxing place to spend an afternoon! Totally family friendly . . . and they were playing 90's hip hop, so I was in heaven.
Last but not least we discovered Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company, which the girls loved because it was full of old arcade games.
Asheville is a gem. I kinda want to stay!
