Anza Borrego State Park Travel Guide | Borrego Springs | California Travel Tips
California travel guide Veronica Hill checks out Anza Borrego State Park and Borrego Springs in this episode of California Travel Tips.
Anza Borrego park sits near the Salton Sea on more than 600,000 acres of slot canyons and badlands. It's a snowbird's paradise, home to four scenic golf courses, beautiful desert trails and awesome off-road adventures.
Fall through spring is the best time to visit Borrego Springs, which is the Anza Borrego desert town center. This is when temperatures dip from summer highs of 120 down to a comfortable 70 to 80 degrees. Spring is when the Anza Borrego flowers carpet the desert in a field of colorful blooms. Anza Borrego wildflowers include such species as desert dandeloin, desert mallow, white sage, lupine and Indian paintbrush.
Anza Borrego camping is free throughout the park! If you want a more pampering experience, stay in one of the hotels or RV resorts in Borrego Springs. You can enjoy a round of golf beneath the Santa Rosa mountains, enjoy some catch-and-release fishing on the Springs at Borrego golf course, or go swimming in their 85-degree pool and hot mineral springs.
When you arrive, check out the visitors center, which is located just above town. This is also where you'll find Palm Canyon, one of the main Anza Borrego campgrounds with hookups. The Anza Borrego Visitors Center is a great place to learn about the native flora and fauna, take in a geology lesson, or enjoy a short stroll to the desert pupfish pond. These endangered fish can live in water three times as salty as the ocean and up to 120 degrees in heat!
Borrego Palm Canyon is one of the area's most popular hikes, clocking in at 3 miles round-trip. Allow roughly 2 hours for the journey, which begins at the Visitor Center and ends at a natural palm oasis. If you're lucky, you may spot some of the desert's native bighorn sheep.
On the hike to Alma Wash, you can check out the rare elephant trees, which were discovered here in 1937.
One of the most unique sights in Borrego Springs are the metal sculptures, which are scattered throughout the valley. Designed by artist Ricardo Breceda, the sculptures are located along 3 square miles of Galleta Meadows Estate, which sits along Borrego Springs Road. Highlights include a field of farm workers, a stranded desert Jeep and an awesome 350-foot serpent that travels beneath the highway. Many of these larger-than-life sculptures resemble the prehistoric creatures that once roamed Borrego Valley, ranging from giant sloths and camels to wooly Mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. Outside the chamber of commerce, you'll find a replica of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista De Anza, who blazed the trail from Mexico to San Francisco in 1775.
Cycling is a great way to see the Anza Borrego desert, and many rentals are available in town. If you have a four-wheel drive, head out to popular locations like Ocotillo Wells, Blair Valley, Split Mountain and Sheep Canyon.
The desert's remote location makes it an ideal spot for stargazing. In fact, Borrego Springs hosts dozens of astronomy events throughout the year, and was California's first International Dark Sky community.

Xcorps TV Presents BORREGO DAYS USA
Xcorps TV Presents BORREGO DAYS USA - Xcorps TV goes small town in BIG America with this special video presentation of 'Borrego Days' featuring the people of the desert town of Borrego Springs California and a parade they had to celebrate their fortune!
Borrego Springs Ca is located 2 hours east of San Diego Ca and is surrounded by the pristine Anza Borrego State parkland. Xcorps cameras rolled on the 48th annual Desert Meeting the Sky celebration starting with a downtown flyover led by State Park Ranger Pilot Kelly McCague and Gray Brandt from El Nino Aviation trailing long smoke!
Many of the towns 3500 inhabitants lined Palm Canyon Drive and cheered the towns movers and shakers rolling along including marching bands like the Terra Cotta Middle School and Clairmont Ca groups along with the Imagine School Imperial Valley Color Guard and Drill Team.
What makes a town a US town was represented from the guys who cleans the grease traps to the local taco shop they all paraded proudly with greets and waves. The historically formidable Winchester Widows made their way past along with the Hole in the Wall Gang and parade grand marshal and valley economic hero the recently reopened 5 star resort La Casa Del Zorro glistened in the warm AM Saturday sunshine!
The United States Navy had a great Submarine Veterans Float along vets on motorcycles and old cars from generations ago all making up the social fabric or Borrego Springs.
Local Latino artist Ricardo Breceda whose big as life steel animals, vehicles and people sculptures now roam free and promote the Borrego Desert was in the parade trailed by twin T-REX captive dinosaurs! Video sound bytes from Breceda and other town locals where festivities continued at Christmas Circle. Honorary Borrego Springs Mayor Martha Deichler and Linda Haddock executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce talk about the fun 3 day festival which was visited by 15,000 people! Great live performance video and music from the Alice Wallace Band doing some countrified crowd pleasing tunes!
Special Thanks to California State Park station Anza Borrego and Linda Haddock at the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce in the making of this film.

JSE Presents ARROYO SALADO Anza-Borrego Offroad Adventures
JSE presents - On The Trail of Adventure Anza Borrego State Park -- Arroyo Salado! The 4X4 offroad adventure continues with cameras rolling on the north eastern corner of this huge California desert park. Driving 15 miles east of the town of Borrego Springs along CA Hwy S-22 the Xcorps Jeep Cherokee ZJ took a turnout called Arroyo Salado. This video is what we shot driving along a winding flash flood wash that cuts through the very unique and surreal desert badlands.
The road was designed by the nature of running water with surroundings changing constantly with much color and scenic beauty. Perspective and direction are delightfully confusing here as if driving through hills of melted chocolate! There are miles of dramatic stretches of road with vertical cliffs layered multi colored from geologic periods laid bare by the storm waters. Because of the water that lingers underground along the wash bajadas are created -- places where creosote bush, sage and smoke tree saplings grow and line the white sand wash road. Just yards away from the wash a different environment exists where for the most part there is little plant life able to grow on the melting eroding landscape!
This films sunset was shot about 4.3 miles along the Arroyo Salado at a place called 5 Palms named after that many palm trees growing in this Badlands grove. Recent winds knocked down one of the palms (4 Palms). It's a cool place for a sunset with a panoramic view of the mountains to the west above the town of Borrego Springs.
Also along Arroyo Salado are the popular spots 'Pumpkin Patch' and '17 Palms'.
One of the largest state parks in the United States and the largest in California Anza-Borrego is located east of San Diego. The vast and remote California State Park is an amazing place to behold while hiking or driving slowly along an arroyo wash as the XC Jeep mounted HD cameras did for this video giving the viewer a good sense of being there! It should be noted that not one other vehicle or person was seen during our trip along the Arroyo Salado. Most people return to asphalt paved roads before sunset and the cover of darkness...not Xcorps!
With a desert environment commanding respect it took an extreme explorer - a Novo Spaniard named Juan Bautista de Anza to cross it in 1775 leading an expedition from Mexico to the current day San Francisco.
This short film is part of a continuing series with TheXcorps exploring the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the more than 500 miles of 4x4 dirt roads there covering some of the most unique varied and pristine desert environments anywhere on the planet!
Special Thanks to California State Park station Anza Borrego and the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce in the making of this film.

Xcorps Borrego Desert 4x4 Adventures Featuring Hunter Valentine HD
Xcorps Borrego Desert 4x4 Adventures Featuring Hunter Valentine - Team Xcorps rolls into Southern California's Borrego Desert State Park here for some low gear 4X4 off road rock crawling excitement in a super remote area known for its Spanish history and massive pristine natural beauty -- Coyote Canyon!
Check the ON and OFF road moves here with sweet sunrise and sunset shots in the desert park which has more than 500 off road miles available to roll down! The Xcorps Jeep even managed a couple small running stream crossings at a place the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza camped in 1774. Water is very scarse in this desert that often hits triple numbers in the Summer. The place MUST be respected on many levels!
As usual Xcorps cameras were the only ones rolling with very few vehicles at all to be seen in the 105-degree heat! To shoot this video Xcorps used the new Sony HDR AS10 with the lens set at 170 degrees to cover the action from several angles! SUPER shooting in the gold desert light with the camera mounted on the hood of TheXcorps desert unit - a Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokee 4X4 resulting in a killer sharp POV film experience carried by great music!
In this film segment are some sweet custom guitar riffs from amigo hombre Angelo Marruzzi along with a new music video from RIVE video promotions featuring jamming hard ass chick band Hunter Valentine led by Kiyomi McCloskey hailing out of Brooklyn NYC. Great song done called The Pulse and the words fit the deserted hostile yet amazing Borrego desert scenery perfectly! Sunrise fog shots down Ca Hwy. 79 into Santa Isabel worked with the music here too!

Super Bloom in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: Desert Wildflowers in Southern California
We were hoping that there would be another super bloom in the desert this year, but kept reading reports that indicated it was not likely to happen. Once it did, we hurried to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in southern California to see this wonderful desert wildflower display.
A super bloom in the Southwest desert is a special thing to see. Only occurring about once per decade on average, a super bloom results in an incredible display of vibrant color as numerous flowers bloom at the same time. We were fortunate to be able to witness the super bloom this year, though it did require a marathon trip back from the Gulf Coast of Texas. We think the experience was worth the drive.

*Anza-Borrego Sculptures at Galleta Meadows*
In addition to the beautiful super bloom of flowers and incredible scenery featured in this video, we also found the metal sculptures fascinating and inspiring. One that was particularly interesting was a serpent that is 350 feet long and has the head of a dragon with a rattlesnake tail. It undulates through the ground several times and goes under the road. Watch for a video on Debra’s YouTube channel to see these sculptures.
Here is a story you might appreciate. The late Dennis Avery (of Avery labels), land owner of Galleta Meadows Estates in Borrego Springs, California, commissioned Ricardo Breceda to create the sculptures that are featured throughout Borrego Valley. The complete story is told in the book Ricardo Breceda: Accidental Artist (link to purchase is below). He calls himself the accidental artist after a devastating accident on a construction job changed his life and led him to welding. The artistry soon began after his then 7 year old daughter requested a life-size dinosaur. In just 10 years his sculptures were featured worldwide with the greatest collection of them (130+) being around Borrego Springs. The town is also unique in that it is completely surrounded by the Anza-Borrego State Park.
The center of town is a park within a roundabout called the “Christmas Circle.” In addition to visiting the State Park Visitors Center for information, you may also want to visit the Chamber of Commerce and the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association (links below).

Xcorps Motorsports Music Presents TRAILDUSTER
Xcorps Action Sports Music Presents TRAILDUSTER - This special Xcorps Motor X report has reporter Scott Sommers test driving some classic American 4x4 Iron from the Dodge Ramcharger sport utility era - an original 1979 Plymouth TrailDuster. Check out this original ride with only 50,000 miles on it rolling the incredibly scenic dirt roads of Californias Anza Borrego State Park!
Shoot team X driving a 1996 Jeep ZJ 4x4 - which acted as a camera platform - headed east out of San Diego with the Trailduster driven by mechanic and on camera host Scott Sommers. Destination was the incredibly desolate bone dry and beautiful Borrego Desert.
Xcorps chose this area to test this truck because it has over 500 miles of scenic off road miles available to explore! A place called Fonts Point was the sunset destination despite the August heat.
Music in this film provided by RIVE promoted artist Micah Zenda strumming his song Against The Wall on a cool Lyra guitar!
Super groove here with Zenda's tunes locking into the Borrego desert landscape! Lots of offroad miles covered shooting this film but you will not see another vehicle rolling besides The Xcorps...that's how BIG and WIDE Borrego is! Roll with it!
Mission accomplished despite the 110F blast with minor hose repairs after some hill climbs! Great shots acquired of the TrailDuster on multiple terrains by cameras shooting from multi angles capturing this classic and iconic off-road vehicle in the golden desert light leaving a trail of dust behind it! This was Plymouth's only SUV, produced from 1974-1981.
Xcorps TV cameras shot this TrailDuster in its original desert colors and 360ci engine running down dirt trails so scenic it looks like a 1980 Plymouth TV commercial! Additional music by Encinitas band Fang rolling with the Anza desert scenery which closes out with a super sunset at Fonts Point -- the Grand Canyon of Borrego State Park!
Borrego is a Park Service hidden off-road scenic X Zone! With over 500 miles of dirt roads in Borrego park there is plenty of Jeep trail fun to be had!

Climbing the Montezuma Grade
Montezuma Grade is the name given to the climb - or descent, depending on your point of view - on California Road S-22, in San Diego County. It links the the Montezuma Valley to a crest close to the village of Ranchita. The climbs some 1,020 meters (measured from the intersection between Palm Canyon Dr. and Montezuma Valley Rd. and the top of the crest before Ranchita) in 17.1 kilometers, with an average grade of 6.0%. The Montezuma Grade crosses a section of the famous Anza-Borrego State Desert Park, the largest state park of California.
The construction of the Montezuma Grade began in 1954, and it took nearly ten years to be completed. As it was the case of many other roads in San Diego County, it was built with labor from several prison camps located nearby. In fact, foremen Ben McManama and Carl Randall were often the only County employees on the job - supervising prisoners from Montezuma Honor Camp. Building the road was a gruesome task, and it took some 160,000 tons of dynamite to carve a way down San Ysidro Mountain. The road was finally inaugurated on June 24th, 1964 in a ceremony where Gale Gordon, one of the stars of television program The Lucy Show attended in the condition of Honorary Mayor of Borrego Springs. Montezuma Grade was so important to the town that the festivities were declared a local holiday that year.
Additional information about the Montezuma Grade and other interesting roads around Borrego Springs can be found at the website of the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce, on page

Mount Laguna is a small census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. It is located at almost 6,000 feet above sea level in a forest of Jeffrey pine, east of San Diego in the Laguna Mountains on the eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest. The hamlet sits at the high point of a scenic drive on Sunrise Highway from Interstate 8 to Highway 79.
