Ancient Sacred Site Desecrated--Boulder, CO--Part II, 7-23-99.wmv
Native American Medicine Wheel Site desecrated by the construction of the NOAA/NIST building in Boulder, CO. Video shot on July 23, 1999. -- Part II
(This video shows the inside of the infamous NIST/NOAA building located in Boulder, CO. I did not know if people with camcorders were allowed into this federal building so I took a gamble. After I had ventured from the center lobby of the building to the south side of the building on the first floor--which in my opinion must have been the NOAA half--I came back to the central lobby where I encountered my Navajo brother and the building security. In the confrontation with security--who wanted to conficate my camcorder--we still managed to talk our way out of the dilemna and got ourselves out of the building.)
(Regardless, I took special care to edit out any information such as posted infra-structural maps, directories, or superstructures that might give the viewer information on how the NIST/NOAA building is constructed. Part II was shot by yours truly.)
In 1995 the General Service Administration (GSA) on behalf of the Department of Commerce (DOC) of Boulder, CO conducted consultations with 14 tribal groups who it felt had a historic and cultural affiliation with the Boulder site. The purpose of the consultation was to discuss the disposition of a rock structure suspected to be an ancient Native American medicine wheel.
The rock structure sat on approximately 40 acres with a central cairn and out-lying cairn structures marking what was suspected to be the summer and winter solstices. An irrigation canal called the Anderson Irrigation Ditch ran north and south but intersected the property almost exactly down the middle, plus, the property was completely surrounded by residential and business development.
The disposition of the property would determine whether or not the GSA could build a $50M building to house the NIST/NOAA programs. Even though six other locations in the Denver/Boulder area were suggested there was a feeling that the GSA was set on acquiring the Boulder site. The GSA went through four consultations with the tribal groups and finally got all but four to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).
Initially, all the tribal groups agreed that the site, although ancient, was culturally and historically significant. Some felt the reason it had remained untouched and undeveloped for so many centuries was because it was a sacred site. Some tribal groups expressed the belief that spirits had protected the property from development.
The tribal groups that did not sign the MOA were the Northern Ute, the Eastern Shoshone, the Jicarilla Apache, and the Kiowa Nation. The GSA then sent what was essentially a fixer to get the hold-outs to sign the MOA.
What the MOA essentially stated was that the property east of the Anderson Irrigation Ditch is sacred while the property west of the Anderson Irrigation Ditch is not sacred.
How is this possible? How can an object be half sacred while the other part not sacred? If one part is agreed and declared to indeed be sacred then all must be sacred. But, the federal government out of its arrogance and ignorance must feel that the sacred can be divided.
Today, if you visit the DOC facility in Boulder, CO just adjacent to the DOC you will find the building of the NIST/NOAA departments. Plain and simple, the dominant culture, represented by their government, is still in the practice of suppressing and destroying the religious symbols and practices of the Native American.
This consultation was my first experience in consultations with the federal government and proved to be the quintessential modus operandi for all agendas with the federal government to follow. There were some concessions but it was recognized by some of the participating tribal groups that the federal government's congressional initiative endeavor lacked any formidable power to truly preserve or protect Native American sacred sites.
(Probably the reason why Boulder, CO and the surrounding area has been having so much difficulty with nature recently is because they were disrepectful and allowed a Native American Sacred Site to be desecrated.)

Inauguration at Boulder Theater
VIDEO: Local Citizens Watch Barack Obama Become President
Barack Obama took the Oath of Office and became President of the United States in front of a crowd at the Boulder Theater.
Videographer: Paul Aiken
Peggy Dyer Photography presents; Inauguration Day Coverage, Pearl St Mall, Boulder Colorado
I decided to head to the Boulder Theater to watch the Inauguration and all the festivities, but it was all sold out. Throngs of school kids wearing backpacks, people of all ages wearing shirts, buttons and huge smiles on their faces. undaunted, I stayed my course. I knew something monumental was happening, and I wanted to capture all the energy of the moment.
I noticed people headed into the Lazy Dog. I got my name on the list and they said it was community seating, every seat in the house would be full. I got one of the last seats in the bar, and just held my camera watching history unfold before my lens.
Once all the pomp and circumstance began, an absolute hush fell over the crowd. Silence, except for the words coming from the screen, everyone was riveted.
The music on this slideshow is from Dominic Lanza, a Boulder Musician, Dominic was playing patriotic tunes on the coronet just outside the Lazy Dog.
