BHTV: Hiking in Our Outdoor Playgrounds across Western North Carolina
Today, we're headed outside to take a hike and breathe some of this fantastic, fresh mountain air. We were recently chosen as one of the greenest and healthiest cities in the United States because of our air quality and the stress-free attitude that we have here.
BHTV: Western North Carolina is a Top Mountain Biking Destination:
BHTV: Cataloochee Ski Area offers the Perfect Terrain:
BHTV: Asheville Parks, Part 2 – Carrier Park, Asheville's Most Popular Park:
With some of the highest peaks in the east, and miles of trails, visitors from all over the world come to Western North Carolina to explore this gorgeous landscape. And locals enjoy the areas and outdoor playground right in their backyards.
“I am the Trails and Outreach Coordinator for Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy,” says Peter Barr. “What we do is we protect land and water resources in Western North Carolina. We do this by placing conservation easements on land and [by] acquiring land for the benefit of the public and to preserve the beauty of our region.”
Consistently, the real estate market shows that people will pay more for property that's located close to open space. But of course, that's not the only reason to protect this open space.
“I decided to move to Western North Carolina because it is, without question, the most beautiful region in our entire state,” says Barr. “My wife and I visited Western North Carolina, in the mountains, to hike for about 7 or 8 years before we moved up here. We always knew that one day we wanted to live here, and we finally fell in love with it so much that we decided to make it our home.”
“I've been hiking since I could walk,” says Chris Neumann, founder of the Asheville Hiking Group. “I grew up in Waynesville, and then moved over to Asheville. I started the Asheville Hiking Group in February of 2008. Since then, we've amassed over 1800 members. I've led over 700 hikes, and we've got members everywhere from Eastern Tennessee to the Piedmont of North Carolina to South Carolina. We even have some in Virginia. Personally, I like the waterfall hikes. There's so many around.
“The trails in the area—basically, the mountains are just beautiful here,” says Ben Dickert, outdoor specialist at Mast General Store. “You got tons of different rivers around you can go hiking by. We've got local trails all around here, that’s just thousands of miles. Basically, Asheville is surrounded completely by national forest, several trails that are even close by. You've got the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then the Mountains to Sea Trail, which parallels the Parkway. So that offers close-by hiking year round. Especially when the Parkway's closed, it's great—you go walking up and down the road. It's just, overall it's just pretty. People are nice, the culture is nice, and overall just a fun place to live.”

BHTV: Western North Carolina is a Top Mountain Biking Destination
One of the most popular ways to live an active and healthy lifestyle in our region is by cycling. Whether mountain or road biking, folks love to get out and take full advantage of our gorgeous terrain. In fact, National Geographic Adventure has named our region a top mountain-biking destination, and even said we were quickly becoming the Boulder, Colorado of the Southeast—with better riding.

“My name is Jordan Salman, owner of The Hub, here in Brevard, North Carolina, located at the entrance of Pisgah National Forest and really close to Dupont State Recreational Forest. We love seeing families out enjoying bike rides in our area. My husband and I take our three-year-old out to ride the trails, and we just love spending time outside together.
“Our shop is a great place to start your mountain bike ride, rent one of our nice demos, and go experience the Pisgah trails,” says Salman. “We keep six beers on draft in our Pisgah Tavern. It's a fun place to gather after, before a ride, go for a hike, talk about your adventure.
“The best thing about the cycling around Brevard, North Carolina is the diversity,” says Salman. “We have world-class road cycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have family-friendly trails in Dupont State Forest that were purpose-built. We have rugged, epic mountain biking in Pisgah. We have it all.”
Our agents are intimately familiar with the communities they work in. They dedicate their time to the nonprofits. They play in these mountains.
“My name is Claudia Nix. I am co-owner of Liberty Bicycles with my husband, Mike. Our business is 33 years old this year. I've been involved in advocacy work for almost 40 years.
“Liberty Bicycles is based here in Asheville, and the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, which I formed in 1974, reaches beyond Asheville,” says Nix. “We are a Western North Carolina club. We have a chapter in Haywood County called Bicycle Haywood. We have folks in Henderson County, Transylvania County, Yancey County, all over Western North Carolina where we hold rides. One of my favorite rides is in Haywood County along Highway 215 in Canton. It goes out along the river, and then climbs up to Sunburst, and then continues climbing onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you can end up making a loop by coming back on 276. It's a delightful ride, and offers a lot of variety.”
“Hi, my name is Sam White. I'm the general manager at Liberty Bicycles here in Asheville, North Carolina. We're located right here close by the Blue Ridge Parkway, so we got access to some of the best riding around.”
“We have people come into the store, really from all over the United States, all over the world,” says White. “No matter the season—whether it's spring, fall, summer—the riding is great. Many people come through here in the late-winter into early spring from the Northeast and in Canada, get out of the snow pack, come do some riding.”

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an access bowl, the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

EPA Officials Meet with Residents Living near CTS Site
Monday afternoon, residents living near the C.T.S. site faced off with E.P.A. officials in a heated confrontation. As we reported Friday, recent vapor tests show high levels of T.C.E. in the air near homes and the E.P.A. relocated residents from three homes.
Former State Representative Charles Thomas hosted a community meeting with officials from the E.P.A. and both state and county public health. They want to know why their homes were not also tested for the toxic vapors. Thomas's wife also developed a rare form of breast cancer and suspects the contamination may be to blame. There's no guarantee for me right now that my cancer's not there and here I am still living in it, says Amy Thomas.
Thomas wants the E.P.A. to relocate families until testing is complete and the threat is eliminated. At around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, officials met with families to discuss the situation and how they plan to continue testing. The meeting got heated as residents questioned why they were never told about the dangers of toxic vapors. They need to treat that just like it was a tanker spill. They need to have the same level of emergency response. If in doubt they need to err on the side of safety. They need to move people away or whatever the protocol is, but they need to act. Doing nothing is not helping and they've been doing nothing for a long time, says Charles Thomas.
I have potential health consequences due to the treatment that I had to receive to save my life then, that I'm going to face in the years to come and it's all because of this contamination and the E.P.A.'s lack of responsibility to clean anything up and how is it damaging my children? We don't know, says Amy Thomas.
News 13's Mike Mason asks Samantha Urquhart-Foster, with the E.P.A., do you understand why these people feel the E.P.A.'s been dragging its feet? Her response, yes, I do understand and I wish it could go faster.
The recent vapor tests prompted county officials to move a school bus stop that was next to the site to an area within the Hidden Valley Subdivision. E.P.A. officials say they will soon begin conducting more air tests at homes surrounding the C.T.S. site, but right now they don't know which homes they'll test or when testing will begin..
Residents wanted to know why the E.P.A. won't simply clean up the entire site right now and officials said they want to give C.T.S. a chance to foot the bill, but if that doesn't happen soon they will step in. At this point, though, the E.P.A. still won't commit to a full scale clean-up.

Snail Mail: Delivery in Asheville Slows with Distribution Mo
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Western North Carolina is experiencing congestion and delays, but it's not on the highway -- it's at your mailbox. The closure of Asheville's Mail Processing and Distribution Center earlier this year wasn't supposed to delay your service. A News 13 investigation has found the closure has delivered increased costs, safety violations, and fines. News 13 tried to access the Greenville, S.C. processing facility where western North Carolina's mail is now being handled, but the post office denied that request. Since the transfer, this facility has been cited for crowded aisles and unsafe conditions. Mail zips through the U.S. Postal Service's processing and distribution centers, but getting your card, bill, or package in the cue is slower than it used to be. When News 13 questioned customers if they feel the Postal Service is doing the fine job they always have, the answer was bleak. The slow job they always have, Chuck Hood said, a postal customer. When cost-cutting measures moved Asheville's Processing and Distribution operations across state lines to Greenville earlier this year, the Post Office promised customers they'd see no change. Eventually that changed to in-town delivery within three days, but customers say even that's changed. It used to be second or third day and now it takes about four or five days sometimes, Morti Patel said, a postal customer. A News 13 investigation put the claim and post office to the test by packing up several boxes and letters and dropping them in boxes and offices across Asheville to see how long it would take them to make it back to our Biltmore Park office. For our boxes, my only option was priority mail. It cost more, but arrived the next day. None of the letters made the deadline; it took four days for two of them, and five for another to reach our Biltmore Park office. And when it's a needed check or prescription, the wait can be painful. I've been waiting over 20 days for a piece of mail to come and it hasn't come yet, Marguerite Chapman said. When I took our results to the post office they declined an on-camera interview but told me, It's hard to speculate on the discrepancy of service. They apologized for, falling short of customer expectations. Not only is it taking longer, our News 13 investigation also found the promised savings of .2 million may have been far-fetched. Its wasteful and it's terrible. They lied to the American people. They told them it wouldn't cost anything more that your mail wouldn't slow down, Joanne Guess said, President American Postal Workers Union Local 277. American Postal Workers, local 277, see what's happening firsthand. Their president claims extra trips up and down the mountain have chipped away at millions in savings. We have tons of trucks that come in here every day that aren't scheduled to come in here, but they have to add the trucks because there's so much mail coming into Asheville; we are a growing city, Guess said. News 13 uncovered extra trips in Greater South Carolina aren't unusual. The Office of Inspector General investigated, finding the greater South Carolina district spent more than a half million dollars for thousands of extra mail collection runs in 2014. The region tops the list for extra trips and costs nationwide. The post office doesn't dispute the findings. When we questioned what's being done to cut extra trips, postal officials say while they're addressing the issue, some additional trips can't be avoided. Digging deeper into transportation contracts for the Asheville area, News 13 found the postal service spends nearly million in Asheville transportation contracts. The contract between Asheville and Greenville is .1 million . Pushing for answers, News 13 found the post office from January through May of 2015 spent more than 67,000 for additional trips and late slips between Greenville and Asheville as well as nearly a million dollars in costs that the post office left out of initial closing estimates for the move to Greenville. Adding work to the Greenville facility has also delivered growing pains, They're telling us, it is so jam packed that they just don't know what to do. They've got so much mail every single day, Guess said. The 44 dock Greenville processing and distribution center was recently cited by OSHA inspectors after they found containers of mail and equipment blocking aisle ways. The initial 0,000 OSHA fine was reduced to 9,000. In fact after pressing postal officials they finally admitted additional mail forced them to process packages at another Greenville post office while facilities in Asheville sit more than half empty. If you're paying an extra million, million just to get the transportation down to Greenville and back when it costs nothing right here all we need is the machine back, Guess said. The Postal Service tells News 13 re-installing

Busy Day at the Post Office
Monday is one of the busiest shipping days of the year for the US Postal Service, as deadlines approach to get gifts to loved ones by Christmas Day.The USPS estimates it will ship more than 600 million pieces of mail on Monday. With a short period between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, they've been averaging more than 500 million per day this season.I've been here 3 years, and this is one of the heaviest mailing days of our season, said Ryan Gibson, manager of the Greenville post office on Orchard Park Drive. We have 4 clerks working at the window...and two assistants helping with your mail needs.Sherri Allred came in Monday to ship about 20 packages to customers of her Etsy online store. She makes handmade items including scarves, pillows and clothes for babies. It started about 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, I've been really busy. I've been shipping 20-25 packages a day, said Allred.Even those who were just dropping by for stamps said it was a busy day.It was hard just trying to find a parking spot to get in, said Kevin Smith. Luckily I didn't have to stand in line, I was just using the machine today.Tuesday is the deadline for shipping to APO/FPO military addresses overseas. It's an international brand with a movie star behind it, and nationwide people are able to walk into the local office supply store and pick up a box of it because of a movement that started in Asheville.Staples is now carrying Woody Harrelson's sustainable Step Forward paper brand likely because the company behind an unassuming Biltmore Avenue storefront launched a campaign that forced it to.Back in 2000, Dogwood Alliance based here in Asheville started a public campaign challenging Staples - an office supply big-box retailer - to start doing a better job sourcing their wood and paper, said Director of Corporate Relations Andrew Goldberg. The non-profit mobilized tens of thousands of people nationwide.[We] ran two years worth of public campaigns and got the public involved with protests and marches and flyovers, birddogging executives and showing up at meetings and dropping banners off of stores, said Goldberg. And the company said 'We can do better'.The campaign spurred policies from Staples, Office Max and Office Depot - three of the largest retailers in the world. This is a market strategy so that the environmental paper movement - with Dogwood - is building demand for better paper, said Goldberg. When somebody goes to their local Staples or Office Depot, they can find recycled products and it's because of the advocates here in Asheville, said Environmental Paper Network Director Joshua Martin. The breadbasket of the country's sustainable paper movement - the home to two of the handful of companies pushing for greener, better-made paper - is in the heart of the Southeast: the largest paper producing region in the world. The Canton Paper Mill is 20 miles East. It's an ugly factory, pulsing smoke out of metal spires as it grinds wood chips into thick shiny cardboard rectangles that will become kids juice boxes.Driving by that paper mill in Canton and smelling it is a big motivator, seeing the Pigeon River change colors is a big motivator, said Martin.Woody said 'I go here, I boycott, then they go to another forest and they cut that down, said Dayna Reggero, who works with Harrelson, sitting in a Carrier Park pavillion.Step Forward Paper is made from agricultural waste, there is 50 million tons of agricultural waste every year in North America that gets thrown away, said Reggero. When we have these other paper options available and when the world's largest corporations are buying that in bulk and investing in those alternative papers, then those are becoming more available for all of us, said Martin. The wheat-straw sheets were launched in Canada stores last year. Since the brand launched in the U.S. on June 18, Reggero says sales have increased 700 percent. It's because of the Dogwood Alliance out of Asheville that it's even there, that people even see it, said Reggero. To get involved or find out more:Accelerating AppalachiaDogwood AllianceEnvironmental Paper NetworkStep Forward Paper
