Inside Milan’s Casa Verdi, where musicians retire in harmony
When Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi in the late 1800s built a neo-Gothic mansion in Milan, he envisioned a bustling sanctuary for professional musicians who were not earning livable incomes. Since then, Casa Verdi has hosted 1,500 residents and become an exclusive retirement home for elderly players. Special Correspondent Christopher Livesay reports.

Casa Verdi è una casa di riposo per cantanti e musicisti che abbiano compiuto 65 anni di età, fondata da Giuseppe Verdi il 16 dicembre 1899 e situata a Milano in piazza Buonarroti 29. La Casa è di proprietà della Casa di Riposo per Musicisti - Fondazione Giuseppe Verdi alla quale il Maestro ne fece dono prima della morte. L’ammissione degli ospiti è deliberata dal Consiglio, avuto riguardo all’età, ai bisogni e ai meriti artistici.[1] La struttura venne eretta in stile neogotico dall'architetto Camillo Boito, fratello del celebre musicista Arrigo, amico del Maestro Verdi. Nella cripta annessa alla Casa riposano lo stesso Verdi e la seconda moglie Giuseppina Strepponi.
Dal 1998 la Fondazione, per realizzare l'integrazione tra musicisti di diverse generazioni, ha provveduto a estendere la sua ospitalità, oltre che ai musicisti più anziani,[2] anche ai giovani studenti di musica che siano meritevoli e bisognosi e che frequentino scuole di musica riconosciute nella città di Milano. La Casa è visitabile, con ingresso libero e gratuito, grazie alla collaborazione dei volontari per Il Patrimonio Culturale del Touring Club Italiano.Delle mie opere, quella che mi piace di più è la Casa che ho fatto costruire a Milano per accogliervi i vecchi artisti di canto non favoriti dalla fortuna, o che non possedettero da giovani la virtù del risparmio. Poveri e cari compagni della mia vita![3]
Nel 1888 Verdi aveva già fatto realizzare non lontano dalla sua tenuta di Villanova sull'Ardaun ospedale attrezzato per la popolazione locale. L'anno successivo, egli diede inizio al proprio progetto filantropico, una casa di riposo per cantanti e musicisti che si trovassero in condizioni disagiate. Nel 1889 egli scrisse all'editore milanese Giulio Ricordi che aveva acquistato un grande appezzamento di terra incolta a Milano, fuori porta Magenta, dove aveva intenzione di erigere la casa di riposo. Egli annunciò dunque la propria intenzione a partire dal 1891 con un'intervista alla Gazetta musicale Milano.
La costruzione non iniziò però che nel 1896 anche se Verdi e la moglie Giuseppina incontrarono diverse volte l'architetto per rivedere insieme il progetto e migliorarlo sempre più. Nel 1895 Verdi fece testamento e stabilì che i proventi delle sue opere sarebbero serviti per pagare l'erezione della casa dopo la sua morte. La struttura venne completata nel 1899, ma Verdi per non apparire vanaglorioso non volle che alcun musicista vi mettesse piede sino al giorno della sua morte, avvenuta poi nel 1901.
I primi ospiti giunsero nella struttura il 10 ottobre 1902 (data dell'89º genetliaco del Maestro) e da allora Casa Verdi ha accolto circa mille artisti negli ultimi anni della loro vita.
Giuseppe Verdi è sepolto nella cappella della casa, accanto alla moglie Giuseppina Strepponi.
Nella Casa vennero girate alcune scene del film Il bacio di Tosca realizzato nel 1984 dal regista svizzero Daniel Schmid.

1. Armida Parsi Pettinella
She debuted in 1893 and had a successful career in different italian opera theaters. She often sang at La Scala where in 1895 she appeared as Anna Bolena in ‘’Henri VIII’’ of Saint-Saëns. In the next year, she again sang at La Scala, but this time as Dalila in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of the same composer. As Dalila she performed aslo in 1902 at Teatro Verdi in Pisa. The singer who was married to conductor Pettinella guested among other things in London, Paris, Madrid and Buenos Aires; already in 1896 she made guest appearance at the Academy of Music in New York where she sang the role of Madelon in the American première of the opera ‘’Andrea Chénier’’ of Giordano. Guest apperances followed in Monte Carlo as Eboli in Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlos’’ (1906), in 1908 at the Teatro Real in Madrid in ‘’Amleto’’ of A. Thomas. She spent her old age at the Casa di Riposo Giuseppe Verdi In Milan.
2. Giuseppina Zinetti
She studied singing under Oreste Poli in Milan she made her debut in 1913 at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Flora/Annina in ‘’Traviata’’ of G. Verdi. After her retirement (1936) she taught singing in Milano. Her daughter Lina Zinetti had a successful career as an opera singer.

3. Bruna Castagna
Born in Bari, located in the South of Italy, Castagna began her study of music at age seven, training first as a pianist. By her early teens, she was recognized in her region as a player of real potential, but she elected at that point to forgo the piano in favor of pursuing a career as a singer. After voice studies in Milan, she made her stage debut rather hastily as Marina in Boris Godunov in 1925. She was only 20, but her success at Mantua's Teatro Sociale prompted conductor Tullio Serafin to offer a contract for performances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Castagna subsequently sang in the Argentine capital for three seasons. Meanwhile, La Scala offered the mezzo opportunities not usually made available to artists so young and she remained with that theater for the ensuing three years from 1925 to 1928. Arturo Toscanini, who had previously become familiar with her work, bid Castagna return to Milan, believing that he had found in her an artist able to do justice to the mezzo works of Rossini and the other bel canto composers. L'italiana in Algeri, unlike the composer's Il barbièri di Siviglia, could not be sung by a soprano. A true mezzo was required and, upon the staging of a new production in 1933, Castagna was hailed by the critics as one who could bring such important works back into the repertory. At Barcelona's Liceo, she undertook Carmen for the first time; it would soon become one of her signature roles. She made her New York stage debut on March 2, 1936, singing a strong Amneris and winning the approval of the city's music critics. Two other roles, following in quick succession, added to her reputation. Her Azucena in Il Trovatore was found a searing dramatic presence with voice to match.
4. Fedora Barbieri
Barbieri did not begin formal study until her eighteenth year. While working in the shop owned by her parents, she often sang to pass the long hours. One day, a knowledgeable customer heard her and insisted that she begin voice lessons; for two years, she worked with Federico Bugamelli in her native city, followed by nine months' study with Luigi Toffolo. Her debut as a singer took place at San Giusto Church which had been the site of her baptism years before. For advanced study, she moved to Florence where she became a pupil of the famous dramatic soprano Giulia Tess (who had herself begun her career as a mezzo soprano). Barbieri made her stage debut in Florence on November 4, 1940, in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto. Her appearance as Fidalma was followed the next day by the role of Azucena in Verdi's Il trovatore.
After her beginnings in Florence, Barbieri sang for two and a half years at La Scala in Milan, initiating her relationship with that theatre as Meg Page in Falstaff. In 1943, she retired for two years to begin married life as the wife of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino director, Luigi Barlozetti. Her return to the stage in 1945 took place as Amneris in Verdi's Aida at the Teatro Verdi in Florence. Her career thereafter grew in depth and breadth as she undertook increasing numbers of roles in both the Verdi and bel canto repertories both at La Scala and elsewhere. In 1950, Barbieri was chosen by Rudolf Bing to perform the role of Princess Eboli in the new Metropolitan Opera manager's calling card production of Don Carlo. The acclaim she received in that much-heralded cast assured her presence at the Met for a total of nine seasons, during which she sang such additional roles as Amneris, Azucena, Dame Quickly, Carmen, Laura, and Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma (in which she, together with Maria Callas, opened the 1956 - 1957 season).

The Maestror left instructions for his funeral: should have been carried out at dawn or dusk, without pomp or music. He wanted simple funeral, as was always the simple life. The last will of the composer were observed, but no less than one hundred thousand people followed the coffin in silence. In the days before the death of Verdi, Via Manzoni and the surrounding streets were strewn with straw to the clatter of horses and the noise of the cars do not disturb the rest. He was buried in Milan at the Home for the musicians that he himself instituted.

Era Natale e mio fratello Franco aveva avuto in regalo un registratore Grundig a Bobine. Fu così che registrammo la giornata a casa di mia nonna con tutti i parenti che ora non ci sono più. All'improvviso mia nonna Maria raccontò di quando piccolina era stata portata a vedere i funerali di Giuseppe Verdi. E' stata per me una grande emozione risentire la sua voce e quel ricordo. Spero lo sia anche per voi.
IL MONUMENTALE DI MILANO: L'ARTE DELL'ADDIO
Il Cimitero Monumentale di Milano è un luogo complesso dove è possibile intrecciare diverse letture: in esso si riflettono non solo i passaggi delle varie stagioni artistiche, ma anche la storia e l’immagine più rappresentativa della città. BIOGRAFÍA
Leonida Bellon was born in Vicenza (Veneto) in 1905 and it is believed that he had Greek ancestors. He studied singing in Milan with the former famous tenor Edoardo Garbin (Padova , 12 March 1865-Brescia , 12 April 1943)
His operatic career started in Rome, about 1934. He sang in January 1936 at the Teatro San Carlo (Naples) in Mario Persico’ La Morenita (three performances).
In June 1939 he sang in Rome, for the R.A.I. (then called E.I.A.R.), the role of Pedro in Anima Allegra by Franco Vittadini.
In September 1939 he sang in Turin, also for the R.A.I., the role of Troilo in Medusa by Bruno Barilli.
Next year, in October 1940, he sang again for the R.A.I. in Turin, the role of Marino in Orseolo by Ildebrando Pizzetti.
His career developed mainly in Italy (those were the war years) and his repertoire increased as he sang La boheme and Cavalleria Rusticana in Messina; Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor in Piacenza and Andrea Chenier (Teatro Nazionale, in Milan). He made his debut at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, in 1945, also as Andrea Chenier, role that he later sang successfully in Parma with Renata Tebaldi and in Rome with Franca Sacchi. Other operas in his repertoire included Il Trovatore, Aida, Il Piccolo Marat, Manon Lescaut, La Fanciulla del West, Turandot and Pagliacci.
His last performances seem to have been in late fifties as Andrea Chenier at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia.
He visited Caracas, Venezuela in 1969 where he gave singing lessons for a short time and sang a recital at the Sala de Conciertos of the Aula Magna of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, then he returned to Milan, where he taught singing at his home in Via Carlo Goldoni 77, Milan, during the ‘70s.
He entered the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti Fundazione Giuseppe Verdi, in Milan, and participated in 1984 in the film Il Bacio di Tosca (Tosca’s Kiss) with the soprano Sara Scuderi and the baritone Giuseppe Manacchini where, in spite of his advanced age (79), showed his powerful instrument, ringing high tones and his caracteristic vocal smalto of a true lirico spinto tenor that he was.
He died in 1987.

E la città lo ha avvolto con il suo rumore, oggi straordinariamente più felpato, come fu quando sparsero la paglia fuori del Grand Hotel et de Milan di via Manzoni perché spirasse in pace.
