Folk Art Center Reopens
After being closed for the last 9 days, The Folk Art Center in Asheville reopens. The center on the Blue Ridge Parkway was forced to close on October 1st, because of the government shutdown. The Southern Highland Craft Guild operates the center. The Managing Director of the Guild, Tom Bailey, said since they have no federal employees and since The Pisgah Inn reopened yesterday, they decided to open this morning. Bailey says he has been in contact with the National Park Service. He told News 13 that while he did not get official word that he could reopen, the Service said it would not put up any blocks to prevent the center from opening.

INSIDER SPOTLIGHT: Craft Beer Distribution
Ten years ago, North Carolina legislators revamped beer consumerism — by popping the cap on the alcohol limit in brews sold here. Raising it from 6 percent by volume to 15 percent meant more, diverse and higher-gravity choices on shelves and menus. For many, that stirred interest in the craft of beer making. Today, the Tar Heel State is the South's beer production champ, with roughly 140 breweries or brewpubs bottling and barreling porters, saisons, IPAs and what-have-yous from the mountains to the coast. But now, for some, state laws are serving up challenges and creating focus on a different kind of cap they say is limiting business.

Tasty Beverage Company in Asheville, NC
In this video, I review the beer store / taproom in Asheville, North Carolina called the Tasty Beverage Company. They have an amazing selection of beers, ciders, and their local beer selection is unparalleled.
Very soon they will be selling and shipping their beer to over 30 states, so if you're interested in that, or if you'd just like to check out what they are about, go to their website:
Some beer suggestions they made:
- Bell’s Two-Hearted all the time, solid and affordable--great example of a style
- Hamburgy Norway, Ordin’s Temple--no hype, just two guys brewing this beer
- Therese Extra Saison Farmhouse Beer--close to Belgium for Belgian style
Saving Brown's Pottery
The oldest pottery shop in the United States is in danger of closing, if it can't raise enough money in time.
Brown's Pottery Studio in Arden has been selling their southern traditional work for 90 years, but the family business has been going since the 1700s. Charlie Brown says he is down to his last 100 pounds of clay and might not last through October.
He's started a gofundme.com campaign, hoping to raise enough money to stay open. I've always tried to be friendly to everybody and all the sudden it's coming home, it's coming back around and helping me, it's a good feeling, and the people here in western North Carolina, can't be beat, says Brown.
The Brown family says they've already lost their house and health insurance and have found themselves in a financial hole.

Snail Mail: Delivery in Asheville Slows with Distribution Mo
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Western North Carolina is experiencing congestion and delays, but it's not on the highway -- it's at your mailbox. The closure of Asheville's Mail Processing and Distribution Center earlier this year wasn't supposed to delay your service. A News 13 investigation has found the closure has delivered increased costs, safety violations, and fines. News 13 tried to access the Greenville, S.C. processing facility where western North Carolina's mail is now being handled, but the post office denied that request. Since the transfer, this facility has been cited for crowded aisles and unsafe conditions. Mail zips through the U.S. Postal Service's processing and distribution centers, but getting your card, bill, or package in the cue is slower than it used to be. When News 13 questioned customers if they feel the Postal Service is doing the fine job they always have, the answer was bleak. The slow job they always have, Chuck Hood said, a postal customer. When cost-cutting measures moved Asheville's Processing and Distribution operations across state lines to Greenville earlier this year, the Post Office promised customers they'd see no change. Eventually that changed to in-town delivery within three days, but customers say even that's changed. It used to be second or third day and now it takes about four or five days sometimes, Morti Patel said, a postal customer. A News 13 investigation put the claim and post office to the test by packing up several boxes and letters and dropping them in boxes and offices across Asheville to see how long it would take them to make it back to our Biltmore Park office. For our boxes, my only option was priority mail. It cost more, but arrived the next day. None of the letters made the deadline; it took four days for two of them, and five for another to reach our Biltmore Park office. And when it's a needed check or prescription, the wait can be painful. I've been waiting over 20 days for a piece of mail to come and it hasn't come yet, Marguerite Chapman said. When I took our results to the post office they declined an on-camera interview but told me, It's hard to speculate on the discrepancy of service. They apologized for, falling short of customer expectations. Not only is it taking longer, our News 13 investigation also found the promised savings of .2 million may have been far-fetched. Its wasteful and it's terrible. They lied to the American people. They told them it wouldn't cost anything more that your mail wouldn't slow down, Joanne Guess said, President American Postal Workers Union Local 277. American Postal Workers, local 277, see what's happening firsthand. Their president claims extra trips up and down the mountain have chipped away at millions in savings. We have tons of trucks that come in here every day that aren't scheduled to come in here, but they have to add the trucks because there's so much mail coming into Asheville; we are a growing city, Guess said. News 13 uncovered extra trips in Greater South Carolina aren't unusual. The Office of Inspector General investigated, finding the greater South Carolina district spent more than a half million dollars for thousands of extra mail collection runs in 2014. The region tops the list for extra trips and costs nationwide. The post office doesn't dispute the findings. When we questioned what's being done to cut extra trips, postal officials say while they're addressing the issue, some additional trips can't be avoided. Digging deeper into transportation contracts for the Asheville area, News 13 found the postal service spends nearly million in Asheville transportation contracts. The contract between Asheville and Greenville is .1 million . Pushing for answers, News 13 found the post office from January through May of 2015 spent more than 67,000 for additional trips and late slips between Greenville and Asheville as well as nearly a million dollars in costs that the post office left out of initial closing estimates for the move to Greenville. Adding work to the Greenville facility has also delivered growing pains, They're telling us, it is so jam packed that they just don't know what to do. They've got so much mail every single day, Guess said. The 44 dock Greenville processing and distribution center was recently cited by OSHA inspectors after they found containers of mail and equipment blocking aisle ways. The initial 0,000 OSHA fine was reduced to 9,000. In fact after pressing postal officials they finally admitted additional mail forced them to process packages at another Greenville post office while facilities in Asheville sit more than half empty. If you're paying an extra million, million just to get the transportation down to Greenville and back when it costs nothing right here all we need is the machine back, Guess said. The Postal Service tells News 13 re-installing
Beer City: How Asheville Became Beer City
Tony Kiss, the beer reporter, has been following the local craft brew scene since 1994. He traces the history of Asheville craft beer from the launch of Highland Brewing Company through this year's announcements that both New Belgium Brewing and Sierra Nevada Brewing will build east coast expansion breweries here and Oskar Blues Brewing will build an operation in Brevard. With 10 craft breweries already operating in Buncombe County, and smaller nano breweries continuing to come on line, Asheville is poised to become the east coast craft beer center of the United States.

Asheville Brewery Expanding, Creating Jobs
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- A popular Asheville brewery is creating jobs with a big expansion.
Wicked Weed broke ground on a new brewing facility in the Enka Commerce Park.
The existing building will be turned into a state of the art brew house that will brew 50,000 barrels a year, bringing about 85 new jobs. They say expanding will help them meet the growing demand.
We had such a great couple of years downtown at the pub. We really hit that point where we couldn't make any more beer and people still wanted our beer, Head Blender Walt Dickinson said.
The next logical step was well, we're going to need a bigger building that we can make beers like Freak of Nature, Double IPA, Tyranny, he says.
Wicked Weed bought the building from Buncombe County.
Commission chairman David Gantt says Wicked Weed is an investment in a big business that will trickle down to help many others.
They're buying a county building from us at fair market value so it's a win for the taxpayer, it's a win for Buncombe County, and it's a win for the Western North Carolina area, he says.
The county provided a $75,000 incentive to help with the expansion. Wicked Weed is making a $5 million initial investment with more expected as production ramps up. And then there's job creation. Dickinson says the facility will eventually employ about 85 people, 40 to be hired in the next few months.
That will be packaging, that will be warehouse. We're going to be hiring some more sales guys and delivery guys for the sales team, he says.
For one of the founding family members, this is all exciting.
This is just the next step. We can share our beer with more people, Denise Guthy said.
We're going to make the most beer per capita, or per city of anywhere in the United States, maybe anywhere in the world, Dickinson said.
Brewing equipment will be installed in June, with distribution of several beers expected by this Fall.
