Garegnano Charterhouse, also known as Milan Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery, or charterhouse, located on the outskirts of Milan, Italy, in the Garegnano district. It now houses a community of Capuchin Friars.
The monastery, dedicated to Saint Ambrose but also known as Our Lady of the Lamb of God, was founded in 1349 by Giovanni Visconti, bishop and lord of Milan. It was then located some 4 kilometers from the walls of Milan. In the 14th century it housed, among others, the poet Petrarch.
It was pillaged in 1449 when the Visconti dynasty fell. It was suppressed under the rationalist reforms of the Emperor Joseph II, Milan then being under Austrian rule, and became a parish church in 1782. In 1960 the surviving buildings and parochial duties were taken over by the Capuchin Friars. The present buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The main artworks include a cycle of frescos in the main church by Simone Peterzano (1578) and Daniele Crespi (1629). The chapter house contains, in the vault, a fresco of Saint Michael by Bernardo Zenale of the early 16th century.

La Certosa di Garegnano a Milano
Un tempo, Garegnano era una zona isolata situata in aperta campagna, alla periferia nord-occidentale di Milano. Completamente diversa l'urbanistica attuale, che ha fagocitato il complesso tra il cavalcavia autostradale e altri edifici.
Fu in quella beata solitudine trecentesca che l'arcivescovo e signore di Milano Giovanni Visconti fondò un luogo di culto e di contemplazione, affidandolo ai monaci Certosini. Consacrata nel 1367, la Certosa godette di ampi benefici, privilegi, donazioni ed esenzioni. Il complesso accolse personaggi del calibro di Francesco Petrarca.
Del periodo tardo-medievale resta poco, oggi, perchè l'edificio venne profondamente rimaneggiato nel 1500-1600. Proprio a quegli anni si devono i capolavori che ne caratterizzano gli spazi interni e che la fanno appellare Cappella Sistina di Milano. L'unica navata è interamente affrescata da magnifiche opere di Daniele Crespi, con le interessanti Storie della Vita di San Bruno di Colonia (o Brunone), il fondatore dell'Ordine dei Certosini e che conosceremo meglio in questo video. Particolarmente interessante la scena del Funerale di Raimondo Diocrés, erudito personaggio che fu maestro di Bruno. Durante il funerale, Raimondo avrebbe proferito parole sulla propria dannazione e si sarebbe alzato dal proprio catafalco! Questo episodio segnò profondamente il suo discepolo Bruno, presente alla funzione, tanto da condurlo alla totale conversione monacale. La scena rappresentata dal Crespi è talmente carica di pathos, da avere suscitato sbigottimento e ammirazione anche in lord Byron, che visitò la Certosa durante la sua tappa milanese.
Il presbiterio fu invece affrescato con mirabili opere di Simone Peterzano (maestro di Caravaggio).

CERTOSA DI GAREGNANO
La Cappella sistina di Milano, nota anche come Certosa di Milano, venne fondata nel 1349 dal vescovo di Milano Giovanni Visconti e pochi anni dopo accolse persino Francesco Petrarca, che rimase colpito dall’atmosfera di pace e meditazione in cui la Certosa era avvolta.
Luogo intriso di storia ed arte che ebbe anche l’onore di ospitare personaggi illustri come San Bernardino da Siena, Filippo IV di Spagna fino a Lord Byron, il quale in una lettera ne celebra la ricchezza decorativa degli interni e la bellezza dei cicli ad affresco.

Il nome vero della Certosa di Pavia è Gratiarum Carthusia cioè Certosa delle Grazie. La costruzione della Certosa di Pavia fu iniziata da Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duca di Milano, che il 27 agosto 1396 poneva la prima pietra della Certosa . Desiderando la nascita di un figlio maschio, fece voto di costruire una Certosa presso Pavia .

La Certosa di Garegnano Milano
Fondata il 19 settembre 1349 da Giovanni Visconti, arcivescovo e signore della città, la Certosa di Garegnano ebbe l'onore, nell'estate del 1357, di ospitare anche Francesco Petrarca. La struttura sorgeva a soli quattro chilometri a ovest dalle mura cittadine di Milano nell'allora borgo rurale di Garegnano e venne realizzata - spiega l'atto di fondazione - col preciso intento di consentire ai monaci che l'amministravano di vivere in ritiro solitario e pregare anche per l'arcivescovo il quale, divenuto anche signore temporale, non poteva badare adeguatamente agli aspetti ecclesiastici che il suo ruolo gli imponeva. A tale scopo il Visconti la dotò di ampie proprietà terriere e immobiliari, campi, vigne e boschi siti nella Pieve di Trenno, le cui rendite potevano garantire il sostentamento dei monaci, e la esentò da ogni tassa e dazio, essendo l'ordine certosino un ordine dedito esclusivamente alla preghiera e alla contemplazione.
I lavori per la costruzione del monastero vennero in gran parte completati dal 1352, anche se la chiesa venne ufficialmente consacrata solo nel 1367. Uno dei priori di questa certosa fu Stefano Maconi che, su suggerimento della moglie del duca Gian Galeazzo Visconti, sarà uno dei primi priori della Certosa di Pavia. Nel corso del Trecento, Luchino Visconti fece cospicue donazioni alla fabbrica della certosa perché venisse ampliata e vi venissero costruiti nuovi altari.
Il complesso, dedicato alla Madonna, era inserito all'interno del Bosco della Merlata, una zona molto frequentata da briganti e banditi i quali, nella notte del 23 aprile 1449 penetrarono nella certosa e compirono razzie impadronendosi di oro e preziosi. Della struttura antica risalente al Trecento e Quattrocento si conserva poco, in particolare il chiostro piccolo, o Claustro Parvo, sul lato destro della chiesa, e l'abside quadrangolare di questa con il tiburio ottagonale.
Il complesso della certosa fu pressoché completamente riedificata sotto la direzione dell'architetto Vincenzo Seregni, già a capo della Fabbrica del Duomo, a partire dagli anni settanta del Cinquecento. Al Seregni spettano in particolare il Cortile dell'Elemosina, il Cortile d'Onore, il Grande Chiostro, Il Chiostro della Foresteria e la ristrutturazione della chiesa, un tempo divisa nettamente in due aree, una destinata ai monaci, l'altra ai conversi.
In tempi successivi la certosa ospitò personaggi illustri della vita politica e religiosa del tempo come San Bernardino da Siena, San Carlo Borromeo e Filippo IV di Spagna.
Essa rimase in auge sino alla soppressione degli ordini contemplativi nel 1779 voluta da Giuseppe II. Utilizzata come caserma durante l'occupazione napoleonica, venne ripristinata al culto con la restaurazione austriaca. Durante l'Ottocento venne visitata da Lord Byron il quale fu particolarmente colpito dai suoi affreschi che descrisse in una sua lettera.
Con la trasformazione in parrocchia del borgo di Garegnano, fu eliminato il tramezzo che suddivideva in due la chiesa, rimossi gli stalli e negli anni trenta del Novecento fu costruito l'altare maggiore.
Pur mutilata del chiostro grande (distrutto all'epoca della secolarizzazione napoleonica), e lambita dal cavalcavia che collega alle autostrade dei Laghi e alla Torino Venezia, resta un monumento di notevole interesse.

Questo tratto autostradale è perennemente invaso dal traffico. Sono in corso lavori di ampliamento per la quarta corsia dinamica, che ben difficilmente potrà risolvere comunque il traffico nelle ore di punta.

Though the Carthusians in their early centuries were known for their seclusion and asceticism and the plainness of their architecture, the Certosa is renowned for the exuberance of its architecture, in both the Gothic and Renaissance styles, and for its collection of artworks which are particularly representative of the region. The church is built on a Latin cross plan, with a nave, two aisles and transept, typical of Gothic architecture. The chancel terminates with an apse. It is covered by crossed vaults on Gothic arches and is inspired, on a reduced scale, by the Duomo of Milan. The vaults are alternatively decorated with geometrical shapes and starry skies. The transept and the main chapel end with square-plan chapels with smaller, semi-circular apses on three sides.
The façade of the church is famous for its exuberant decorations, typical of Lombard architecture, every part being decorated with reliefs, inlaid marble and statues. Sculptors who worked on it include Cristoforo Mantegazza and Giovanni Antonio Amadeo himself. In addition to applied sculpture, the facade itself has a rich sculptural quality because of the contrast between richly textured surfaces, projecting buttresses, horizontal courses and arched openings, some of which are shadowed, while those in the small belfries are open to the sky.
In 1492 Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono took up the construction, assisted on site, for he was cocurrently occupied with the cathedrals at Pavia and at Milan and other churches, by his inseparable collaborator on both cathedrals, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. In their hands the project was thoroughly redesigned.[5] Scores of artists were involved. The classicist style portal is by Benedetto Briosco (1501). The porch has a large arch of classicist form resting on paired Corinthian columns which are each surmounted by a very strongly modelled cornice on which the arch rests, the construction being derived from the Classical, used by Brunelleschi, and employed here for a bold and striking effect. The decoration is of bas-reliefs illustrating the History of the Certosa. Above the central arch is a shallow balcony of three arches, above which rises the central window.
La Certosa di Pavia è un complesso monumentale storico che comprende un monastero e un santuario. Si trova nel comune omonimo di Certosa di Pavia, località distante circa otto chilometri a nord del capoluogo di provincia.
Edificato alla fine del XIV secolo per volere di Gian Galeazzo Visconti, signore di Milano, in adempimento al voto della consorte Caterina dell'8 gennaio 1390, e completato entro la fine del 1400 in circa 50 anni, assomma in sé diversi stili, dal tardo-gotico italiano al rinascimentale, e vanta apporti architetturali e artistici di diversi maestri del tempo, da Bernardo da Venezia, il suo progettista originario, a Giovanni Solari[4] e suo figlio Guiniforte, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, Cristoforo Lombardo e altri.
Originariamente affidato alla comunità certosina, poi quella cistercense e, per un breve periodo, anche quella benedettina, dopo l'unificazione del Regno d'Italia la Certosa fu dichiarata nel 1866 monumento nazionale e acquisita tra le proprietà del demanio dello Stato italiano, così come tutti i beni artistici ed ecclesiastici in essa contenuti; dal 1968 ospita una piccola comunità monastica cistercense.

PONTE DELLE BARCHE NEAR BEREGUARDO ON THE TICINO RIVER
The 'Ponte delle barche' pontoon bridge on the Ticino river, near the small town of Bereguardo dates back to the 14th century (1374). It has a 700 years history, dating back to the Visconti family felt the need to be able to cross the river.
In 1449 the Sforza family built a stable pontoon bridge. Before the unification of Italy, each side was patrolled by border agents and soldiers of the Piemonte region and the Austrian Hungarian Empire.
Throughout the years it was fixed and upgraded several times and in 1913 the current version of the bridge was built with cement boats. It was supposed to be temporary, but it survived both WWI and WWII.
The river mimics the flooding of the river and it rises and lowers according to the river level.
The bridge in the Parco del Ticino has also been the location of choice for a few movies, including Adriano Celentano's ‘Mani di Velluto’ (1979) and ‘Il bisbetico domato’ (1980). Maintanance costs of the bridge are around 70.000 euros a year and the bridge, despite being an historical treasure, suffers from lack of funds and lack of water, probably due to climate change. Most of the boats are not able to float anymore, sue to lack of water, making the whole structure weaker.
