Meet Brooklyn's Voodou Queen: Edeline St. Armand
Watch more on VICE here:
Being possessed, it turns out, is exhausting work. Just ask Mambo Edeline St. Armand. While popular culture portrays Vodou as full of curses and sticking pins into little dolls, the religion has in fact played a central role in Haitian cultural identity since the country's birth, a result of the New World's first and only successful slave rebellion. Since Brooklyn is home to the largest Haitian population outside of Haiti, we sent Thomas Morton into our own backyard to witness the realities of being possessed by Vodou's multitude of rowdy, rum-thirsty spirits.

How to Grow Garlic Indoors
Watch more Indoor Plants & Container Gardening videos:
Follow these easy steps and you'll have a delicious seasoning within a couple of weeks, and full grown heads of garlic in a couple of months.
Step 1: Buy a garlic head
Purchase a head of garlic from your local grocery store or nursery. Larger heads work best for growing indoors.
Step 2: Fill pot with soil
Fill a large pot with enriched potting soil. Break the head of garlic apart, but don't peel the cloves. Plant several cloves at least six inches apart and two to three inches deep in the soil.
Step 3: Place pot in sunlight
Place the pot in an area that gets plenty of direct sunlight.
Step 4: Maintain your cloves
Water your cloves every few days over the next two weeks, but be careful not to overwater. If the soil feels dry to the touch, water is needed.
Step 5: Let garlic mature
Garlic typically takes between three and six months to mature, depending on the variety. You will know your garlic is mature when its flowers begin deteriorating and the top of the plant turns yellow.
Tip
When you purchase your garlic, note its name and search online or ask a gardening expert to find out how long that variety takes to mature.
Step 6: Harvest the garlic
Harvest the garlic when it's ready. You can begin as soon as you see shoots, which have plenty of flavor on their own, or you can wait until you see bulbs, or until the tops of the bulbs begin to dry. Use a fork or a pair of scissors to harvest the cloves so you don't damage the plant itself.
Step 7: Hang the garlic
To store the garlic, hang it in a dry, well-ventilated area.
Did You Know?
Bram Stoker popularized the use of garlic to repel vampires in his 1897 novel Dracula.

RESTRICTIONS: NONE
A gun-wielding man opened fire on GOP lawmakers at a baseball field on Wednesday, critically injuring the House Majority whip.
The New York Times reports that the shooter was positioned behind the fence of the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia. He fired shots from near the third dugout, as Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was on second base. Multiple people ran for cover, hiding in the first base dugout.
The gunman is believed to have used an SKS rifle and a 9 mm pistol, firing at least 50 rounds during the attack.
Scalise was hit with a single rifle shot to the left hip, which fractured bones and damaged internal organs as it made its way across his pelvis. He reportedly dragged himself 15 yards to the outfield, and lay there until the shooting ended. He was rushed to the hospital, and is still in critical condition, according to CNN.
The gunman was killed following a shootout with police. Four others have been reported injured, including a Congressional staffer, a lobbyist, and two Capitol police officers.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 66-year-old Illinois resident James Hodgkinson.
Described as a Bernie Sanders supporter and angry over the election of President Donald Trump, the suspect had for weeks been spotted sitting at the nearby YMCA, which had a clear view of the baseball field.

Phenomenal ASSAMESE PORK FEAST - Bamboo Pork, Boiled Pork, Chicken Curry | Sivasagar, Assam, India
The states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India are heaven for any curious traveler. Between their warm people, incredible mix of cultures, magnificent landscapes, alluring historical sites, and insanely tasty cuisine, I constantly found myself in awe there. It’s very different from other parts of the country. I’m so happy I get to share my adventures there with you!

Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom, which ruled for 600 years until the Burmese invaded and took over in 1819.
My afternoon began at Talatal Ghar, which is an underground, 18th-century palace. Construction began in 1751. It’s the largest Ahom monument in the area. It also contains two secret tunnels, one of which is 16 kilometers long and was built to escape enemies!
It costs 300 rupees (roughly $4.29 U.S.) for foreigners to enter and only 25 rupees ($0.36 U.S.) for Indian residents. It’s like that all over India, so foreign tourists should always be prepared to pay more to visit the attractions.
There are three giant cannons on display, and goats roam the grounds. As my friend Afzal and I explored, lots of people came up to me to shake my hand. The people in Assam are so friendly!
We headed up to the rooftop to get a view of the entire site. I loved the brick structure of the buildings. It was very Mughal and reminiscent of northern India. We reached an area of the palace where the ceilings are 25 feet high and the walls contain nooks where candles were placed to keep the tunnels lit. It’s like a maze! There are lots of windows and intricate doorways with arches. The construction materials used here included sticky rice and duck eggs!
From there, we headed down to check out the tunnels. They have low ceilings, so I had to duck so I wouldn’t bump my head. Inside the tunnels were offerings. Back on the top level, we checked out another building with lots of windows, which helped keep the palace cool.
There’s another long and low tunnel that takes you through lots of different chambers. They’re so cool and unique!
From there, we headed to the Heritage Restaurant to have some Upper Assamese food. There’s a lot more poultry and meat in the cuisine here. The restaurant is located on the shores of a lake, so we ate right out on the pier.
I started with some aloo pitika, which are mashed potatoes with chilies, onions, and tomatoes. It was hot but delicious! The chilies hit me hard! It was refreshing, though, and reminded me of a Russian salad.
The chicken curry had a rich, brownish-green tint to it and contained tomatoes and potatoes. I removed the meat from the bones and ate it with the rice. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the curry was so tasty!
Next was the bamboo pork, which had a rich, green color, and looked like it was mixed with veggies. It was so fatty and full of phenomenal flavors! It was some of the best pork I’ve ever had! It was soft and had been roasted in the bamboo. It tasted like bamboo mixed with pork and veggies!
Next, I tried the pork with the crispy papad, which was incredible. I loved the crunch with the fatty pork! Next was a rick and colorful yellow dal with chilies and herbs. It was almost like mashed lentils and was so flavorful! The fern was a vivid green and reminded me of kale, spinach, and broccoli. So yummy!
Then I tried the boiled pork with bamboo shoots and chilies. It was very soupy and tasted like wonton soup with pork. There were lots of Chinese flavors in it! It was fantastic! What a phenomenal meal!
From there, we headed to another Ahom palace, Kereng Ghar, which is a 7-story castle with 4 floors above ground and 3 underground.
The inside of the palace was really dark. Everything had a pinkish-orange hue. I had never seen pillars like the ones inside it. Kegeng Ghar was built in 1750 and was the first palace built in the area for the capital. The main room for the king is on the top level. I loved the Ahom architecture. Then we climbed to the very top for some unreal views!
Visiting amazing historical sites like this is why I love travel!

Iguana Beach (Lizards of the Florida Keys)
Large Iguana digs shelter for the night at Bahia Honda State Park, FL
(Via Wikipedia) The green iguana is considered an invasive species in South Florida and is found along the east coast as well as the Gulf Coast of Florida from Key West to Pinellas County. The original small populations in the Florida Keys were stowaways on ships carrying fruit from South America. Over the years, other iguanas were introduced into the wild, mostly originating through the pet trade.
Some escaped and some were intentionally released by their owners; these iguanas survived and then thrived in their new habitat. They commonly hide in the attics of houses and on beaches. They often destroy gardens and landscaping. They seem to be fond of eating a native endangered plant, (Cordia globosa) and feeding on nickernut (Caesalpinia) a primary food plant of the endangered Miami blue butterfly (Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri); additionally on Marco Island, green iguanas have been observed using the burrows of the Florida burrowing owl, a species of special concern, all of which can make them more of a serious threat to Florida's ecosystem than originally believed.

For unto me, no vision was granted, no catharsis illuminated within the corridors of my most distant dreams.
Rather, there was a vanity so profound, that despite all my struggle for utmost illumination, the dreaded light incinerated my ego and all divinity was eroded from the paths of the righteous.
Marvel at the grandeur of this majestic nothingness, the shallow grave of glorified human subjugation exemplified in absolute void.
Elevate yourself in death and escape the forthcoming floods of silence and mortality, for harsh waves erode even the strongest foundations of faith.
All contradictions perish in the mitigation of differing shades of divinity, yet the role of existence continues to flourish unchallenged and arrogant.
Penitence and desperation die equally, drowning beneath the currents of time and consciousness.
