Vlog #15: BLVD
We were able to get on the very very long list for Kansas City's Boulevard Brewery's Tasting and Tour. We got to see the inner workings of the brewery and got to enjoy some free samples of their delicious beer. It felt like being in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, except we got wasted. Not chocolate wasted, just straight up wasted. HAHA
Crown Candy: A north St. Louis staple
It isn’t just a restaurant. It isn’t an ice cream shop, nor is it just a candy factory. It’s all three combined into one.
Crown Candy Kitchen has been sitting on the corner of 14th Street and St. Louis Avenue for the past 106 years, and the business does not plan to relocate anytime soon.
“I love this neighborhood. I love this area, and I plan on being here for the rest of my life,” Andy Karandzieff, owner of the establishment, said.
As an iconic landmark in north St. Louis with a reputation that is world renowned, Crown Candy Kitchen is a family business that has been passed down through four generations.
It was opened in 1913 by Andy’s grandfather, who passed the business on to Andy’s father in 1951. Andy’s father ran the business until the early '90’s, then passed the reins to Andy and his brothers. Business has been booming ever since.

STL Startup Challenge - Zettie's Confections (2013)
I am Kerri White, owner of Zettie's Confections, a candy and confection company inspired by my grandmother Zettie. My memories as a little girl in Zettie's cozy kitchen still make me smile today. It's where I became her sous chef and helped her create beautiful and tasty cakes, cookies, and candies. From stirring batters, to getting ingredients from the refrigerator for Zettie, I cherished being a part of Zettie's creative baking process. The valuable lessons that she taught me, in addition to her special way of doing things, helped me develop a confection business. My husband and I opened the business on October 9, 2009. We approached the owner of a local coffee house to inquire about the possibility renting commercial kitchen space after hours. Once the details were worked out, we started baking evenings and weekends. By 2010 we successfully sold products to our first retail (wholesale) customer (Straub's Markets.) We now serve multiple retail distributors in five states (Illinois, Missouri, California, Nebraska and Iowa), and have a sixth state (Indiana) coming on board very soon thanks to our relationship with Whole Foods Markets. Additionally, our signature products have been featured in the VIP goody bags for celebrities and musical artists at Lollapalooza, SXSW, and Sundance Film Festival. We received an A-List Award (St. Louis Magazine - 2010) for our Ultimate Chip Cookie, voted best cookie in St. Louis. Fall 2013, we will begin serving two new retail clients -- Sam's Club (Road Show) and Neiman Marcus Catalog.

Who Made the First Ice Cream Cone?
Learn about the history of ice cream cone.s.
The ice cream cone has been around for quite some time.
Prior to the 19th century, ice cream eaters used paper and metal cones which allowed for the easy grasping of their favorite treat.
These cones appeared in Germany, France and England. While the history of edible cones is still fuzzy to this day, the ice cream holding treat was mentioned in French cookbooks as early as 1825 and they were described as rolled cones derived from waffles.
Another chef listed an edible cone in a cookbook from 1888. The England based chef's recipe called for almond cornets which were baked in the oven.
Although the differing methods for ice cream cones had previously been around for awhile, in 1896, a man who emigrated from Italy is credited with inventing the first cone in New York City. He received a patent for his work in 1903.
However, debatably the most recognized event behind the ice cream cone is the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. A Syrian concessionaire, Ernest Hamwi created a crisp, waffle-like cone.
Roughly 50 ice cream vendors and 12 waffle stands took up residence at the fair. Apparently the Syrian male created the cone to assist an ice cream vendor who had run out of paper dishes.
Hamwi began venturing throughout the United States promoting what he called the World's Fair Cornucopia as a innovative way to eat ice cream. In 1910, he opened the Missouri Cone Company and officially called his creation an ice cream cone.
As the demand for ice cream increased, the want for the radical cone went along with it.

Beer production chain [TRACE]
Food safety and quality and as well as the authenticity of food products has to be guaranteed to protect the rights of consumers. Due to increasing number of food fraud scandals and newly introduced regulations related to the information about the origin of food on the label, delivery of efficient procedures is urgently needed with the aim of distinguishing authentic and fraudulent products. This relates to the overall goal of TRACE project which is development of traceability methods and systems that will provide consumers with added confidence in the authenticity of European food.
Beer is an example of a processed cereal product that is consumed widely across the EU and the wider world. Brand identity is a key attribute of beers and often arises from longstanding brewing practices associated with a region, town or even religious order. One such example of the latter is the Trappist beer produced in Belgium and The Netherlands. Trappist and non-Trappist beers have been used by the TRACE project to develop original models enabling one to distinguish the origin of beer products, Rochefort.
