Church of Forty Martyrs of Sebaste

The Forty Martyrs of Sebastia Monastery (Tbilisi, Georgia) / ორმოცი სებასტიელი მოწამის მონასტერი

Near the Metekhi Bridge in Tbilisi, on the nearby territory of the Church of the Forty Sebastian Martyrs, archaeologists found the fragments of the fortress wall. Unique discovery refers to the period of the King Vakhtang Gorgasali.

However, discovered at a depth of about two meters pools, according to experts, are dated back to I-II centuries. Square pools have stairs, filling and draining system of sulfuric water, the bottom of the basin is decorated with mosaics.

Before present, according to the existing archaeological materials, the first settlement on the territory of the modern town was dated by IV-III centuries B.C. The subsequent construction of the city began in the second half of the V century by the order of the king of Kartli Vakhtang Gorgasali.

A new discovery, in the study of which are involved the Patriarchy of Georgia and members of the National Museum, may completely change the foundation history of the city. According to archaeologists, this discovery suggests that there was a much earlier settlement on the territory of the modern town before the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali.
