784.Eglise Saint-Jean de Montmartre Paris (4/5) / Johanneskirche Montmartre Paris (4/5)
(Deutscher Text : siehe unten)
Plenum (3 cloches de volée) de l'église catholique Saint-Jean-de-Montmartre à Paris (18ème arrondissement).
Tonalités supposées : la3 - si3 - do#4.
Vollgeläut (3 Glocken) der katholischen Kirche Sankt-Johann-von-Montmartre in Paris (18. Arrondissement).
Vermutliche Schlagtöne : a' - h' - cis.

Visiting the church
THE ATTRACTIVE STEEPLE and the front side
of the church are made of freestone. The entire
structure and its furnishings are in neo-Gothic
style. The three bells that can be seen from outside
can be heard regularly during religious ceremonies.
THE NAVE AND THE CHANCEL are in
masonry. Wood has been used in a spectacular
fashion, in particular for the vault, which has the
shape of an inverted boat's hull. Wood is a traditional
feature of Lutheran church architecture for its
symbolic value, and because of the talents of the
carpenters that were employed ; at St Jean the
wood used conveys an element of warmth alongside
the stricter white walls of the chancel.
THE STAINED GLASS is another attractive feature
of the church. Those of the chancel are of Anglican
origin, a gift of Elizabeth and Florence Gladstone,
wife and sister-in law of the first pastor of the parish,
Henri Bach. They are said to be the work of a pre-
Raphaelite artist named Reid. The green and violet
tints are characteristic of this school.
On the right, on the panel with the Nativity, the
absence of a halo around Marie underlines the
pre-eminence of Jesus.
The stained glasses panels of the transept, the
gift of an anonymous donor, are a recent work of
a master craftsman, Jacques Loire.
THE TRIPTYCH behind the altar, thought to be
of uncertain Germanic origin, was already present
in the chapel on rue Amélie. It represents knights
on horseback and on foot as in the chivalric orders
of mediaeval Europe.
THE CHURCH FURNITURE has been used
since the chapel was created. The positioning of
the pulpit and the baptistery on each side of the
altar respects the Lutheran tradition of attributing
equal importance to the sermon and to the sacraments
of baptism and holy communion.
THE ORGAN was built by the famous manufacturers
Cavaillé-Coll-Mutin and includes 11 voices,
two manuals and a German-style pedal-board. It
benefits from the church's good acoustics. An
association of Friends of the Organ at St Jean
was recently created for the upkeep of this instrument
and to set it off to its best advantage.

A Walk Around Place des Abbesses, Montmartre, Paris
The Place des Abbesses is located within the Montmartre area of Paris where it is home to an original art nouveau metro entrance, plus the Square Jehan-Rictus with the I Love You wall and the Paroisse Saint Jean church that was constructed in a revolutionary style at the time.
There was once a Benedictine convent in this area of Paris that was built on the site of the martyrdom of Saint Denis, which was a popular place for pilgrimages until it was destroyed during the French Revolution, and this is where the Place des Abbesses gets in name from.
The Place des Abbesses is a typical square that has a traditional feel, yet is now a popular place for shopping with some old shops and chic boutiques close by, along with numerous restaurants for that all important experience of eating out in Paris. Alternatively, you could just enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafes in Paris that are also situated around this square.
