We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods. This being Italy, we also tried to prioritize meals, sampling everything from pizza to risotto, and cappuccinos to aperitivos. The following travel guide will highlight 20 things to do when you visit Milan, Italy
1) Milan Catherdral (Il Duomo - Duomo di Milano - Domm de Milan)
2) Il Duomo Terrace
3) Italian Breakfast - Cappuccino and sweet Italian pastries
4) Sforza Castle - Castello Sforzesco
5) The Galleria - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
6) Risotto alla Milanese - Milan style risotto
7) Street Art around Porta Ticinese
8) Colonne di San Lorenzo - Columns of San Lorenzo Roman Ruins
9) Boat tour down the canal (linea traghetti gaggiano milano)
10) Dine along the canal in Milan's Navigli District
11) Aperitivo drinks and buffet - Apéritifs and digestifs
12) Shopping in Milan down Via Torino
13) Visiting Chinatown for some Chinese food
14) Ride a bicycle in Milan like a local
15) Pizza al taglio (pizza al trancio) Italian pizza by the slice
16) Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio containing relics of the 3 Magi
17) Duomo Museum covering the cathedrals history in-depth
18) New City Views with a hop-on-hop-off bus pass
19) Museum of Natural History - Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano
20) Night views of Milan nearby Il Duomo
Our trip to Milan, Lombardy was part of the Blogville project where we stayed in a local apartment and experienced all of the best cultural activities, museums, restaurants, arts and entertainment the city has to offer. This city guide is our best attempt to create a mix of best attractions and off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't necessarily find in a typical Milan tourism brochure.
20 Things to do in Milan Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our first stop was Il Duomo, which is the most recognized attraction in the city. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete.
So we've sat down at a little cafe and we're going to have our first Italian breakfast with cappuccino and sweet pastries.
Something that surprised us about Milan is that there is a castle right in the middle of the city. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, and it then underwent several restorations and expansions in the following centuries. Today it houses several of the city's most prized art possessions, including frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's very last sculpture.
For some upscale designer shopping, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be.
So we just found a local little restaurant and we're going to be trying a traditional dish that is very popular in this city and in the Lombardy region. We are going to have Risotto alla Milanese.
The Colonne di San Lorenzo are the remains of Roman ruins that date back to the 2nd century. They are believed to have been part of a bath house.
Another fun activity to try in Milan is a boat tour of the canals. The city's canals are attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who in 1482 was called over by the Duke of Milan to help renovate the city’s canal system.
Milan's Navigli District is one of the liveliest parts of town especially when the sun goes down for dining al fresco.
So we've gone out for our first Italian Aperitivo. Which is kind of like a pre-dinner drinking tradition. Basically, you get yourself a cocktail for about 10 Euros and that gives you access to this massive buffet.
And that's all for our visit to Milan. We hope this video will give you some cool ideas of sights and attractions to check out.
This is part of our Travel in Italy series showcasing Italian culture, Italian arts, Italian foods & Italian cuisine.

►More information:
Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remains of a 14th-century fortification.
Walking distance, you'll find this beautiful, newly designed and built district, with a dedicated metro stop called 3 torri.
The district is called CityLife: it's a residential, commercial and business district close the old city centre of Milan. It has an area of 36.6 hectares.
The development is financed by Generali Group, designed by famous architects Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind.
The Straight One also know as Allianz Tower, The Twisted One also known as Generali Tower and The Curved One which is being built as we speak.
Walking distance again is the the Parco Industriale Alfa Romeo Portello. A 370.000 square meter park in the heart of Milan. Important features are the 2 main little hills.
Go to the Bosco Verticale. 2 Towers built in 2014 by Boeri Studio with a height of 111 metres and 76 metres and contain more than 900 trees on 8,900 square metres of terraces.
Literally next to the bosco verticale are the Italian Google Head Quarters if you're interested. I'd recommend a mini stop here since it's a very beautiful area.
5 minute walking distance is the Uni Credit Tower, another masterpiece of modern architecture located in the most advanced and businessy district of Milan.
Go for Aperitivo at theNavigli near Porta Ticinese! It's a sort of Venice in Milan with water canals and beautiful little houses.
Not only it's a very romantic place but also serves late cocktails in the open, ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET BOTH for only 10 euros ALL INCLUDED!
If you're more into comfy dining, in a quieter place and super delicious a la carte dining, we recommend Piccola Ischia! It's a typical Restaurant from the center south of Italy!
Prices here are super good! The traditional hand made pizza from Naples for 8 Euros! Appetizers for 3 euros! And it's all so good!

Milan City Tour
Milan City Tour
Milan Italian: Milano Lombard: Milan (Milanese variant)) is the city capital of the Lombardy Region in Northern Italy and is the 2nd largest economy in the European Union in 2016, after Paris. It is the second most populous city in Italy after Rome, with the city proper having a population of 1,369,000 (the Metropolitan City of Milan has a population of 3,219,000). Its geographical outskirt (that stretches beyond the boundaries of the Metropolitan City of Milan), has a population estimated to be about 5,270,000 in 1,891 square kilometres (730 square miles), ranking 2nd in the European Union. The wider Milan metropolitan area, popular for Greater Milan, is a polycentric metropolitan region that comprehends almost every province of Lombardy, the Piedmont province of Novara, and some parts of the province of Piacenza which counts an estimated total population of 8,123,020.
Milan is Italy's main industrial and financial capital and corporation hub home to thousands of the most important companies worldwide. In terms of GDP, it has the largest economy among European non-capital cities. Milan is considered part of the Blue Banana and has now become the wealthiest city among the economic rivalry Four Motors for Europe.
Milano is currently a leading Alpha Global City, with strengths in the arts, commerce, design, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, services, research, and tourism. Its business district hosts Italy's Stock Exchange and the headquarters of the largest national and international banks and companies. Its official stock index FTSE MIB is one of the world's most valued stocks that, for an example, has surpassed the United States' Dow Jones and NASDAQ indices by 300%.
The city has long been named Fashion Capital of the World and the World's Design capital, attributed for several multinational events and fairs, including Milan Fashion Week and the Milan Furniture Fair, which are currently the biggest in terms of revenue and capital growth. The city hosts numerous cultural institutions, academies and universities, with 11% of the national total enrolled students.
Milan's museums have one of the most expensive artifacts in the world. In terms of tourism and arts, some of its few record-breaking landmarks are in the city center, home to the world's first 7 star hotel Town House Galleria, biggest gothic cathedral Duomo, and one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world, La Scala, the first modern design palaces of the 1950s of Viale Beatrice d'Este, a road that dates back to ancient Rome, and on which they walked princesses with Leonardo da Vinci. Landmarks (including the Milan Cathedral, Sforza Castle and Leonardo da Vinci paintings such as The Last Supper, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) attract over 11 million visitors and grows by 12.5% each year, which means that Milan welcomes the most cultural tourists in the world. (data referred to city proper). Milan has one of the highest numbers of accredited stars from the Michelin Guide in the world. The city hosted the Universal Exposition in 1906 and 2015. Milan hosts two of Europe's major football teams, A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale, and one of Italy's major basketball teams, Olimpia Milano.

Milan Cathedral - Duomo di Milano - Visit to the Rooftop
Milan Cathedral or Duomo di Milano, in Italian, is one of the major tourist attractions in Milan. The Cathedral is located at the city's most central point as all street in the center of Milan lead to the Duomo. The construction of the Milan Cathedral started in the 14th century and took nearly six centuries to complete. The Duomo is impressive in terms of artwork and size. It is the largest church in Italy and the fifth largest in the world. St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is larger but technically speaking part of the Vatican State. Tourists are allowed to enter the Duomo after a security check at the entrance. The ticket also provides access to the rooftop which offers spectacular views of the city center of Milan.
