The Legend of Collin McKinney | Texas History Remembered
Collin County and its county seat are named for the same person —Collin McKinney, whose 250th birthday was in 2016. Eric Nishimoto, the author of Texas Maker: The Heretofore Unknown Legend of Collin McKinney, guides us through Collin McKinney’s life from the perspective of his wife Elizabeth “Betsy portrayed by Peggy Helmick-Richardson.
McKinney was son of American Revolutionary patriot soldier Daniel McKinney, his family moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, after the war. In 1826, Collin McKinney became a friend of Benjamin R. Milam, who was recruiting settlers for the Red River Colony in Northeast Texas, a grant that both the United States and Mexico claimed. McKinney was chosen to be one of five delegates from the Red River Colony to the Convention of 1836, that called for Texas to declare its independence from Mexico. Here he was one of five men appointed to draft the Texas Declaration of Independence. At 70 years of age, he was the oldest to sign it. By the time of his death in 1861 at the age of 95, Collin McKinney had lived under the flags of seven different nations. He is buried near Van Alstyne, Texas.

McKinney, Texas is Unique by Nature
Located on the northeastern corner of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and the county seat of Collin County, McKinney has many unique assets including a rolling terrain and vibrant historic downtown centered around the former Collin County Courthouse – now the McKinney Performing Arts Center. The McKinney National Airport is a full service general aviation airport and many of the largest and most active corporate flight departments in the region call it home.
With its jurisdictional boundaries set, McKinney has abundant open land to its northwest and the city’s population is expected to climb to 350,000 at build out. During this period of incredible growth and prosperity, McKinney has maintained the appeal for its residents by investing in parks, open space and other amenities. Even still, McKinney’s historic downtown remains one of the city’s crown jewels, as is home to many community events, thriving local businesses and restaurants.
McKinney is a community of diverse residential neighborhoods. From stately homes in the Historic District to magnificent homes in Stonebridge Ranch, choices abound for homebuyers, yet this adds to the sense of community rather than detracts from it.
Despite its swift growth, McKinney still feels like a small town – clearly the formula for its popularity. While fiscally conservative, diversity is valued in McKinney and reflected in the makeup of the community. Numerous community events provide opportunities for residents and visitors alike to socialize and enjoy McKinney.
