Remapping A Place: How One Tribe's Art Reconnects Them To Their Land | Short Film Showcase
Jim Enote, a traditional Zuni farmer and director of the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center, is working with Zuni artists to create maps that bring an indigenous voice and perspective back to the land, countering Western notions of place and geography and challenging the arbitrary borders imposed on the Zuni world.

Archeology suggests that the A:shiwi (Zuni) have been farming in the Zuni River valley of western New Mexico since at least A.D. 700. After their lands were colonized by the Spanish in the sixteenth century and later claimed by the United States, indigenous peoples of the Colorado Plateau were left in a deeply familiar territory of unfamiliar names. Google Maps shows Jim’s farm bordering Indian Service Route 2, but that’s not how he sees his land. “To assume that people would look at the earth only from a vantage point that is above and looking straight down doesn’t consider the humanity of living on the landscape.” The Zuni maps, says Jim, contain something very important: a different way of looking and knowing.
Zuni maps draw deeply on shared experiences of place. They depict petroglyph carvings, images from prayers and songs, colorful stacks of pottery, arroyos and mesas. They are an opportunity for the Zuni to reclaim a deep understanding of a shared cultural tradition, rooted in ancestral lands, told again in a familiar language. These maps are critical to constructing a bridge between the traditional and modern worlds, connecting the old ways with the new.

KPIX Gets Rare Look Inside Federal Immigrant Detention Center
Reports of abuse and inhumane conditions in federal immigrant detention centers prompted the California attorney general to take over control and monitoring of the facilities this year. ICE officials say past problems have been fixed and invited KPIX 5's Allen Martin to see for himself. (9-29-17)
David Justice and the BLM Land Grab in Colorado
If I asked you 'who is David Justice?,' you might tell me about a guy who used to play for the Yankees and married Halle Berry. But there's another David Justice who has been in the news, and it's for very unique reasons.
Justice, a native of Montrose, Colorado, is a radio host who is running for public office. According to his personal website, he carries around a copy of the Constitution in his pocket and he claims he can recite it verbatim. Justice has taken a strong stance against national debt, calling for more transparency about federal and state dollars.
He also says the following on his website: [I oppose] federal road closures; the holding of land and [I believe] the increase in the exercise of power in the State by the federal government must be turned around.
In this YouTube video from February of last year, Justice appears to discover that the Powderhouse Gulch Road, what he describes as an old mining road, was unceremoniously destroyed by the Federal Government. Justice says the road itself predates the state of Colorado.
Zoomed in video shots of the road show large piles of debris, concrete and rocks blocking the path. Justice organized a group of locals from nearby Pitkin to remove the debris and restore the road without permission of the Forest Rangers. Justice sent the mayor of Pitkin an email and asked for help with the project. At one point in a conversation, the attending forest ranger told him that the process to decide and close the road took five years.
Following a morning appearance on his radio show, Justice was met by the Bureau of Land Management, the FBI and US Marshals. The officials arrested Justice on suspicion that he tried to build a rod on BLM land after it was closed to the public. David will appear in court on Friday morning.

Traffic's at a standstill. It's basically slush, it's not frozen ice, but it's not passable for anybody without chains or four-wheel-drive, and that's why they're stopping because they're doing more towing off the highway than they are driving through.

STORYLINE:
A powerful snowstorm dumped 18 inches of snow in parts of the Colorado mountains on Thursday.
The storm spread eastward, snarling traffic and shutting down dozens of school districts.
The National Weather Service said snow was falling at a rate of about 3 inches an hour in the southeast Denver area at one point.
Red Cross officials sent supplies to Byers, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Denver, in case the weather stranded travellers along Interstate 70, the state's main east-west route.
But some locals said this was not as bad as the weather could get.
It's probably a seven, on a scale of one to ten, Bruce Yoder said as he drove through the storm.
Avalanche experts said recent storms have left a snowpack of up to 2 feet in the mountains and several avalanches had already been reported, including 10 in the past week on the east side of Ten Mile Range in Summit County.
A forecaster from the Colorado Avalanche Information Centre said recent snowfall did not bond well with the snow surface from a late-September storm, creating ripe conditions for avalanches.
A 207 kilometre (125 mile) corridor from Colorado Springs to the New Mexico border was under a blizzard warning.
The storm left wet and slushy highways in cities from Pueblo to Colorado Springs and Denver to Fort Collins.
A jack-knifed tractor-trailer blocked part of Interstate 25 near Colorado Springs, where visibility was down to two to three feet.
Up to 80 outbound flights were cancelled on Thursday at Denver International Airport, mostly on United Airlines, the airport's busiest carrier.
On Colorado's wide-open Eastern Plains, residents and emergency managers braced for blowing snow and wind forecast to reach up to 76 kilometre per hour (45 miles per hour).

First Blind Kayaker Down the Entire Grand Canyon!
FIRST BLIND SOLO KAYAKER GOES DOWN ENTIRE LENGTH OF GRAND CANYON
August 29th, 2013
Disabled Navy veteran Lonnie Bedwell made history last week, becoming the first completely blind solo kayaker to go down the entire length of the Grand Canyon. He achieved this feat when he completed his trek down the Colorado River supported by Team River Runner on Wednesday, August 21. Bedwell, a Navy Veteran from Dugget, Indiana, was guided by three military veterans from Team River Runner who relied only on a system of voice commands to navigate him through the entire trip, including the large, difficult Class V rapids. The 16-day journey was made possible thanks to the help of numerous volunteers and fellow veterans, as well as a generous grant from Check-6 Inc., a service disabled veteran owned company that focuses on safety and training in the energy industry.
By kayaking the entire 226-mile length of the Grand Canyon in a solo kayak, Bedwell not only made history, but he also fulfilled a dream he has long shared with Team River Runner Executive Director, Joe Mornini. Running the Grand Canyon was a dream for Joe and me, and now that dream has become a reality. I hope that other disabled persons will be able to share this feeling with me one day and achieve their dreams as well, said Bedwell.
Mornini, who co-founded Team River Runner, a chapter of Disabled Sports USA, in 2004 and currently serves as its Executive Director, praised the team effort that engendered this historic achievement and which continues to serve as the ethos of his organization. No one goes down the Grand Canyon on the river and leaves the same way they entered. Lonnie's three warrior guides, and the entire group of veterans and volunteers, formed a bond that enabled healing and empowerment for all, and a truly historic achievement as a team.
Joe Mornini has opened the doors for warriors who were wounded to find life again on the water. He is a man of singular vision and energy who saw a need and focused his sites on helping wounded veterans get back in the game, said Brian Bru Brurud, the founder of Check-6, Inc. Congratulations to Lonnie and Team River Runner on a job very well done!

Mormon and Jewish Delegation Gathers at Historic Jerusalem Site
A delegation of Latter-day Saint leaders and Jewish dignitaries from the United States gathered at a historic site in Jerusalem to mark the 175th anniversary of an early Mormon apostle’s journey to Jerusalem. On October 24, 1841, Elder Orson Hyde climbed the Mount of Olives under the direction of Joseph Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to offer a prayer to dedicate the land as a gathering place for the Jewish people.
“Orson Hyde’s 1841 mission to Jerusalem to dedicate this land for the return of the Jews and for Jerusalem to be its capital city was an important moment in the latter-day Jewish return to their homeland. We believe the work of Elder Orson Hyde has played a key role in God choosing Jerusalem again,” said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, speaking at a commemoration event at the Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, Thursday, October 27, 2016.
Elder Holland and Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Elder James J. Hamula of the Seventy traveled to the Holy Land with a group of distinguished Jewish leaders.
The delegation included former New York Attorney General Robert Abrams; former U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman from Connecticut; Rabbi Michael Miller, executive vice president and CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York; Marlene Post, former U.S. national president of Hadassah; Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis; and Rabbi Meir Soloveichik of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York City and director of the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought of Yeshiva University.
“There is nothing more noble than extending the hand of friendship to fellow human beings. The world needs more understanding and respect among people, and it is encouraging to see the fostering of that core value here today,” said Abrams, who has been involved in cultivating a stronger relationship between Mormon and Jewish communities for many years.
“Over the years we have toured the facilities of the Church and discussed various topics in meetings with Church leaders, including Elder Holland and Elder Cook, aimed at creating greater bonds of friendship and understanding, said Abrams during the Jerusalem visit. These events enabled me to learn more about the Mormon community and to discover that there are strong areas of common ground with the Jewish community.”
He continued, “Each has a fundamental focus on family; each places a very high value on education; each has a strong commitment to charitable giving; each demonstrates humanitarian concern and response when there are international catastrophes such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis around the globe; each has a history of disproportionate success due to ability, hard work and determination; and each has been subjected to fierce persecution and prejudice.”
Elder Cook noted, “The genesis for this event was the extraordinary relationship and friendship that grew out of our collaborative effort to better get to know each other and our traditions that were important to both Jews and Latter-day Saints.”
“Interestingly, in the United States we each have a population of between 6 to 7 million. The center of Jewish influence is New York City and the East Coast; the center of Latter-day Saint influence is in Utah and the surrounding states,” explained the Mormon apostle.
“The Jewish delegation is composed of exceptional individuals and is a remarkable representation of the mainstreams of Judaism,” said Elder Cook. “It also includes major Jewish organizations. We express particular appreciation to Robert Abrams, who has been the primary impetus in developing this relationship.”
“We are grateful to join together in this commemorative event, which is also a commemoration of our friendship and our desire to unitedly participate in certain humanitarian projects in the future,” he added.

Joker gets arrested: Joker cosplayer gets charged by Virginia cops for wearing a mask - TomoNews
WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA — An overly enthusiastic Joker cosplayer got nabbed by cops last week for wearing a mask in public.
Jeremy Putnam, 31, was allegedly wielding a sword and hauling it about in public.
Under Virginia state law, it’s a class-6 felony for an adult to wear a mask in public that’s punishable by up to five years in prison.
His buddies tell a different story. In a Change.org petition to set Putnam free, they claim he was carrying a cane and not a sword.
Putnam’s currently being held in an adult detention center on a $2,000 bond.
