Italian landslide: Huge boulders destroy buildings in South Tyrol
Subscribe to ITN News:
Footage has captured the devastation after huge boulders crashed through and destroyed a barn in northern Italy. An estimated four thousand cubic meters of rock came loose from a cliff face above the site, before destroying most of the 300-year-old building. Huge scars were left in the hillside where the jagged rocks had rolled, with surrounding vineyards also left badly damaged. No one was injured in the incident. Report by Sophie Foster.

The Microbes Shaping Our Lives
Part 4 of the 2019 #UAScience lecture series #SearchingForCertainty
For decades, biologists and physicians have seen microbes as foes and agents of disease that need to be wiped out. Now they are realizing that the millions of microbes we harbor are essential for our health. Our microbes live in complex eco-systems highly responsive to environmental signals, outnumber the cells of our body by at least 10-fold, and act both locally, in the organs they inhabit, and at a distance, by releasing small metabolites that travel in our blood. Thus, our microbes influence directly or indirectly virtually all our characteristics: our immunity and our blood pressure, our weight and our cognition and possibly even our mood. Microbial diversity is so extraordinary that each of us carries a distinct set of microbes and can be identified by the microbes s/he carries. The discovery of the microbial world has just begun but is already revolutionizing biology and medicine.

To fully explore and understand the ocean, we can no longer rely on a handful of large, expensive research vessels and vehicles. We truly need all hands on deck to do it.
On November 8-9, 2018, we brought together leaders and changemakers in ocean exploration, entertainment, recreation, and art to imagine new ways to empower an open, inclusive global community of ocean explorers. Our goal is to imagine creative ways to make the ocean so pervasive in modern culture that everyone has a positive association with and understanding of the sea.

The Vox Machina form a tentative alliance with an Illithid outcast named Clarota, deep inside the caverns under Kraghammer. They learn of the creature's people and their subjugation to a mysterious being known only as Kvarn, as well as the haggard mind flayer's expulsion from the hive. Now cut off from the Elder Brain, Clarota burns with hatred for this Kvarn, and wishes to free the Illithid race from the usurping entity. In order to do so, the Vox Machina must proceed further into the deep, and reach the center of Clarota’s hive. But in order for the heroes of Emon to reach the Illithid city in the belly of Khaloor, they must get past the first flayer they encountered, as well as its small army of Duergar.
The heroes devise a plan, and fly themselves down to the center of the enemey’s war camp, to chance a risky assassination attempt on a creature that could easily break their will with a glance.

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called Barsoom by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas one of the Thark chiefs.
The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet's canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. Carter rescues her from the green men to return her to her people. (Summary from Wikipedia)

Robert Sietsema: New York in a Dozen Dishes | Talks at Google
In New York in a Dozen Dishes, longtime restaurant critic Robert Sietsema (currently, ny.eater.com) offers a gastronomic portrait of the city through the lens of 13 dishes. Some, like fried chicken and pizza, are well-known and universally consumed. Others, like cuy (South American guinea pig) and Pakistani goat brains, are more challenging and obscure. Each dish is described by means of anecdote, historical fact, and personal history. The book also contains recommendations for where to find the best examples of these dishes in the city and surrounding areas, and a recipe that would allow you to make each dish – though it’s really easier just to eat them in restaurants.
Robert Sietsema was born in Michigan; grew up in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas; went to college in Austin and grad school in Madison, Wisconsin, before discovering that he always belonged in New York. He’s worked for Gourmet and the New York Times, is married, lives in Greenwich Village, and has a daughter.

White Fang Audiobook by Jack London | Audiobook with subtitles
White Fang by Jack LONDON
When White Fang is birthed in a cave to a wolf sire and a wolf/dog halfbreed dam, he is heir to two traditions. At first he is content to explore and learn laws of the Wild. But then his mother is caught and held by old memories of a past relationship with Man, and White Fang follows her into service with the Indians. Life among sled dogs is hardly less cruel and dangerous than living in the Wild, but brutality notches upward when his drunken master sells him to a nasty, twisted hanger-on at a riverside town of white men. He is stripped of everything soft and gentle when forced to fight to the death for a crowd of bettors.
Taming this savage spirit and reclaiming the nobility within looks impossible. Fortunately, and heart-warmingly, a man arrives in White Fang's life to try.
White Fang is often called the mirror image of Jack London's acclaimed The Call of the Wild in which a dog follows the reverse arc from tame to free. (summary by Mark)
