The Untold Truth Of Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs
The story of Nathan's Famous hot dogs is one of American entrepreneurial spirit, with some pretty weird marketing gimmicks thrown in for good measure. From hot dog-loving gangsters to dead whales and secret recipes, here's everything you didn't know about these famous franks.
Hot dogs might not exactly be expensive food, but when they're being sold for next to nothing, people tend to raise eyebrows. At least that was the case when Nathan Handwerker launched his hot dog business way back in 1916.
Handwerker was working in Coney Island at the upscale eatery Feltman's, and they sold their hot dogs for 10 cents. After being persuaded to strike out on his own and sell a frank made with his own recipe, Handwerker launched his hot dog stand with the weiners being sold for 10 cents as well, though they were quickly slashed to just five cents. Perhaps unsurprisingly, crowds were suspicious as to why these hot dogs were so much cheaper than Feltman's.
To get people on board with the five-cent franks, Handwerker hired men in white jackets to hang around his stand and eat hot dogs. People believed the men were doctors from the nearby Coney Island Hospital, and soon began buying the nickel franks. The gimmick made people think that if these cheap hot dogs were good enough for doctors, than they must be all right to eat.
When Nathan's celebrated its 100th anniversary, they had five-cent hot dogs once again, though no fake doctors were needed to sell them this time.
Nathan Handwerker never claimed to be the inventor of the hot dog. That uniquely American food is generally attributed to Handwerker's former employer Charles Feltman. Nathan Handwerker's hot dog stand may be what New Yorkers instantly think of when somebody mentions a Coney dog, but it's something entirely different to people in Michigan, and the rest of the Midwest.
In Michigan, Coney Island has little to do with New York, but instead is a reference to the hundreds of diners across the state that serve Greek food and hot dogs smothered with chili, onions, and mustard. To them, that's the Coney Island dog or Coney dog.
So how did the name Coney Island hot dog come to prominence in Michigan of all places? Well, at the turn of the 19th-century when Greek immigrants came to the United States, many of them passed through New York and visited Coney Island before moving westward.
These immigrants took the hot dog, added chili and dubbed it the Coney Island dog. It wasn't long before diners popped up in Detroit with names like the iconic Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island grills.

Shmaltz Brewing Company is an American Craft brewing company located in Clifton Park, New York, US, and produces HE'BREW Beers and formerly Coney Island Beer before its acquisition by Boston Beer Company in 2013. Ranked in 2013 as one of the Top 100 Brewers in the World by RateBeer.com, Shmaltz won 9 Gold and 5 Silver Medals in the World Beer Championships in 2012. A recipient of the Distinguished Business Award by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Shmaltz was also included in the Top 50 Fastest Growing Bay Area Companies by San Francisco Business Times.
Founder and owner Jeremy Cowan established the company in San Francisco in 1996. He'brew now sells across 37 states, through 40 wholesalers and nearly 5,000 retailers. In 2007, Shmaltz released a new line of craft brewed lagers under the Coney Island banner.
After 17 years of contract brewing, Shmaltz opened its own New York State production brewery in Clifton Park, New York. Shmaltz's new home boasts a 50-barrel brewhouse capable of producing 30,000 US beer barrels (35,000 hL) per year. The new brewery packages 12 and 22 ounce bottles and kegs and offers on-site tours and tastings. In 2018, the facility was sold to SingleCut Beersmiths.The company's name refers to shmaltz, a type of cooking fat that is frequently associated with Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine.

Long Island is an island in the U.S. state of New York. Stretching northeast from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean, the island comprises four counties, including two (Kings and Queens) that form the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, and two (Nassau and Suffolk) that are farther out on the island and mainly suburban. Thursday afternoon I took a stroll from Delancey to Union Square. At Clinton & Houston, I talked with the owner art-bar Culture Fix. Then met a homelss crew that shared some advice for those temporarily homeless. As I was walking up 1st avenue, I noticed about 30 or so people standing around outside 100 year old Saifee hardware store. They were all charging their batteries. The owner is sharing the power from their generator and provided multiple outlets. At 12th street and 1st avenue, I notice a sign for free curry and met the owner of Sapparo restaurant. They have been in business for over 30 years. The resturant was full and people were leaving tips of appreciation. As I was leaving the East Village, I came across the Guardian Angels, who shared some important tips for roaming the NYC streets wihout street lights.

Staten Island Railway
The Staten Island Railway is the only rapid transit line in the New York City borough of Staten Island. Operated by the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority, a unit of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, it is considered a standard railroad line, but only freight service which runs along the western portion of the North Shore Branch is connected to the national railway system.
SIR operates with modified R44 New York City Subway cars, and is run by the New York City Transit Authority, an agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and operator of the New York City Subway. However, there is no direct rail link between the SIR and the subway system proper. SIR riders do get a free transfer to New York City Subway lines, and the line is included on official New York City Subway maps. Commuters who use the railway typically use the Staten Island Ferry to reach Manhattan; the line is accessible from within the Ferry Terminal and most of its trains connect with the ferry.

The following passage is from Pandora 2011: Accounts of the Cursed Shopping Center. In this section, Sebastian the tour guide assesses the risks and rewards of working for affluent clients.
There are drawbacks to being a tour guide of the former Crescent Beach Mall. It's a dangerous job; you can buy the farm in every imaginable way. To make matters worse, physical maladies result from long term exposure. In my case, that means going bald. I'm 5'6 and a hundred twenty-five pounds, so I'm not exactly a stud, but losing my hair hasn't helped me in the looks department.
Then why do I keep at it? Well, the job has its perks. I earn a good salary, plus I manage to score a little side cash. Magical entertainment is a frontier business. Customers are unsure of the value of services, especially ones they dream up. The City of Crescent Beach collects a thousand a head, and my standard fee is two-fifty a person, but when customers make wild requests, I ask for the sky.
So when the call came in from this high-maintenance client, I started rubbing my hands together. The woman called me at home at ten o'clock Saturday night to ask if I was available Easter Sunday. And could they send a limousine to pick me up and bring me to their estate? And was six a.m. a good time for me?
On the ride there, I make use of the limo's coffeemaker and fully-stocked bar, spiking a cup of java with Jack Daniel's. It's not the first time I started drinking early on a Sunday.
An hour-and-a-half and three drinks later, we enter the gate of the compound, and pass its tennis court and guest house. The limo circles the fountain, lets me out, and parks alongside a matching set of BMWs, black and red, his and hers.
Mrs. Lucille Hitt greets me with a strong, leathery handshake. Her white pants reveal her marvelous figure, and her black blouse cuts a perfect V. She has short, yellow hair and kohl-rimmed eyes, with a deeply wrinkled face.

Long Island is a densely populated island off the East Coast of the United States, beginning at New York Harbor approximately 0.35 miles (0.56 km) from Manhattan Island and extending eastward into the Atlantic Ocean. The island comprises four counties in the U.S. state of New York. More than half of New York City's residents now live on Long Island, in Brooklyn and Queens. To the extreme southwest, it is separated from Staten Island and the state of New Jersey by Upper New York Bay, the Narrows, and Lower New York Bay. To the east lie Block Island—which belongs to the State of Rhode Island—and numerous smaller islands.
Both the longest and the largest island in the contiguous United States, Long Island extends 118 miles (190 km) eastward from New York Harbor to Montauk Point, with a maximum north-to-south distance of 23 miles (37 km) between Long Island Sound and the Atlantic coast. With a land area of 1,401 square miles (3,630 km2), Long Island is the 11th-largest island in the United States and the 149th-largest island in the world—larger than the 1,214 square miles (3,140 km2) of the smallest U.S. state, Rhode Island.With a Census-estimated population of 7,869,820 in 2017, constituting nearly 40% of New York State's population, Long Island is the most populated island in any U.S. state or territory, and the 18th-most populous island in the world (ahead of Ireland, Jamaica, and Hokkaidō). Its population density is 5,595.1 inhabitants per square mile (2,160.3/km2). If Long Island geographically constituted an independent metropolitan statistical area, it would rank fourth most populous in the United States; while if it were a U.S. state, Long Island would rank 13th in population and first in population density. Long Island is an island in the U.S. state of New York. Stretching northeastwards from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island contains four counties, two of which are boroughs of New York City, and two of which are mainly suburban . In popular usage, Long Island often refers only to Nassau and Suffolk counties in order to differentiate them from New York City, although all four counties are situated on the island and are part of the New York metropolitan area. North of the island is Long Island Sound, across which are the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island.

A timeline of United States inventions (before 1890) encompasses the ingenuity and innovative advancements of the United States within a historical context, dating from the Colonial Period to the Gilded Age, which have been achieved by inventors who are either native-born or naturalized citizens of the United States. Copyright protection secures a person's right to his or her first-to-invent claim of the original invention in question, highlighted in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution, which gives the following enumerated power to the United States Congress:
In 1641, the first patent in North America was issued to Samuel Winslow by the General Court of Massachusetts for a new method of making salt. On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the Patent Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 109) into law proclaiming that patents were to be authorized for any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement therein not before known or used. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Pittsford, Vermont became the first person in the United States to file and to be granted a patent for an improved method of Making Pot and Pearl Ashes. The Patent Act of 1836 (Ch. 357, 5 Stat. 117) further clarified United States patent law to the extent of establishing a patent office where patent applications are filed, processed, and granted, contingent upon the language and scope of the claimant's invention, for a patent term of 14 years with an extension of up to an additional 7 years. However, the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994 (URAA) changed the patent term in the United States to a total of 20 years, effective for patent applications filed on or after June 8, 1995, thus bringing United States patent law further into conformity with international patent law. The modern-day provisions of the law applied to inventions are laid out in Title 35 of the United States Code (Ch. 950, sec. 1, 66 Stat. 792).
From 1836 to 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a total of 7,861,317 patents relating to several well-known inventions appearing throughout the timeline below.
