St John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada
St John's in Newfoundland & Labrador
St. John's, the capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, is the perfect combination of big-city luxury and small-town charm. As the oldest and most easterly city in North America, this is where heritage lives. Melded with culture, history, and personality, St. John's has survived two World Wars, five centuries, countless hardships and triumphs. It's become a rare, old city full of character, experience and charisma, with a contemporary, sophisticated edge.
Wander down the narrow, criss-crossing streets carved by horse and carriage over 100 years ago. Pass the colourful jellybean row houses wedged together in every space lining the sides of steep hills and hidden alleyways. Once you've meandered down to the working harbour of the waterfront, look towards the Narrows and imagine a time when the waters were brimming full with fishing schooners.
Visit Quidi Vidi, the charming village-within-a-city, which still embodies the spirit of an old fishing outport. Then, hike up nearby Signal Hill through the famous Battery, where tiny wooden homes still cling valiantly to cliffsides ravaged by ocean waves. The unmistakable, iconic Cabot Tower guards the top of Signal Hill, where military men guarded the shores throughout the 1700s and 1800s. Here, Marconi famously received his first transmission across the Atlantic in 1901. Look out over the cliffs and watch the city's harbour and captivating skyline spread out before you. Perched on the top of the horizon is The Rooms, home to the provincial museum, art gallery and archives, standing next to the striking twin clock towers of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
As you explore the history of this place, shop at the many fine boutiques, shops, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and art galleries lining the streets. In the evening, sit back, relax, and enjoy live music or local theatre where actors will whisk you away to another place and time.
For nightlife excitement, head to the famous George Street. Here, clubs, pubs, bars, and restaurants are stacked and crammed. Every evening, George Street blazes with energy, especially during the George Street Festival -- five days and nights of dynamic musical entertainment.
Here in St. John's, courteous and lively people will treat you as friends -- willing to send you in the right direction, help you on your way, or even take you there. Always happy to tell a tale, no matter how tall, just to make you smile. Certainly, this city is like no other.

Corner Brook's Expo '67 Fountain [Bohumil Elias's Dry Fountain]
The fountain is more than an old piece of architecture it is an artwork that has been left to fall into disrepair. Until @jc_parsons posted the name of the artist on Twitter we didn't even know who made it. Now it turns out this artwork might have a wider importance then any of us thought possible. It is our responsibility to treat all public artworks with pride and respect. Dry Fountain by Bohumil Elias.

STORYLINE:
Canadian Navy lieutenant Chris Saunders was remembered as a hero on Wednesday at his funeral service in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Father-of-two Saunders died following a fire on HMCS Chicoutimi last week off the coast of Ireland.
Adorned with his officer's cap and service medals, Saunders' flag-draped casket was carried into St. Andrew's United Church by nine naval officers.
Sailors in dress uniform and dignitaries, including Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson, the British Queen's representative in Canada, and Defence Minister Bill Graham, crowded into the church to mourn the 32-year-old sailor.
Canada's diesel-powered submarine was three days out of Scotland on its maiden voyage under the Canadian flag when the fire left it adrift in rough seas some 160 kilometres (100 miles) northwest of Ireland.
Fellow crewmen said Saunders collapsed after being unable to get a breathing mask on and that it was some time before his colleagues could find him in the blackened quarters.
Saunders is the first Canadian submariner to die on duty since 1955.
Canada obtained the Chicoutimi, along with three other submarines, from Britain in a 1998 lease-to-buy deal.
His funeral was held simultaneously with a memorial service in Rhu, Scotland, attended by Saunders' 56 crewmates from Chicoutimi.
The memorial service in Scotland also included crewmen from HMCS St. John's, a Canadian frigate that escorted the disabled sub into Faslane, and HMS Montrose, a British warship that led the rescue effort.

British Columbia Aviation Museum: Things to see Part 13
Colin Bowley has written a short history and description of the Vickers Viscount, the first turboprop aircraft to see commercial service. Designed in 1948, the initial production aircraft flew in 1950, powered by four 1,990 hp Rolls-Royce Dart 525 turboprop engines. 445 Viscounts were built.
Trans Canada Airlines got its first Viscount on Dec. 6, 1954, and was the first airline in North America to use turboprops. By 1958, TCA had a fleet of 51 Viscounts, flying them for almost 20 years.
The museum’s Viscount came from Vancouver International Airport, delivered by barge to the Pat Bay seaplane base. As part of the restoration, the seats were reupholstered. To pay for this, the museum sold a seat to anyone willing pay $300, the cost per seat. When you go into the passenger cabin, look for the plaques with the names of the people who own the seats.
The Vickers Viscount is a four-engine medium-range turboprop airliner with a capacity of up to 74 passengers produced by the British manufacturer Vickers-Armstrongs.
The first and main production version Viscount Type 700 had a capacity of 32 passengers. The improved and stretched (+3ft 10in / 1,20m) variant Viscount Type 800 was able to carry 53 -70 passengers.
