A Logger's Life Before Confederation
Logging in pre-Confederation Newfoundland and Labrador relied on the muscle and endurance of its workers. From sunrise until sunset, the men chopped down trees, hauled logs, and helped to bring the wood to the mill site. Lean about the working life of a pre-Confederation logger in this video.

Simeon Dredge (Evan Mercer) is cutting cords for the first time. Ambitious and young, he has no concept of what working in the woods will entail. Brother-in-law Albert Taylor (Darryl Hopkins) is forever crushing Sim's fantasies. “No one gets rich cutting wood”.
When word spreads that Harold Jacobs (Brian Marler), a Government representative, has been sent to investigate the notoriously poor conditions in the lumber camps, Albert fears that Sim's naiveté and ambition will cause him to speak out and forever be branded a troublemaker.
The CEO of the island's largest paper company, Stewart Percy (Greg Malone), is worried that Jacobs will stir up a rebellion amongst his labour force. Percy will not allow his family legacy to be threatened by an upstart politician and the great unwashed.
The political lobbying and backroom bargains made in Falling Trees will set in motion a cycle of exploitation that threatens the fabric of a society for a century.
