Craggy Gardens | Blue Ridge Parkway
We made an amazing discovery high in the mountains of North Carolina... Craggy Gardens along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The elevation is so high it looks and feels like winter, yet you can see the plush greenery at the lower elevations. Since we were here in May, we did not get to see the blooming Rhododendrons, but nonetheless the view was outstanding.
Come join us for a hike up the Craggy Garden trail to the summit!

In the Blue Ridge Parkway, high up in the Great Craggy Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, is the Craggy Gardens. The Craggies are known for the exposed surfaces, or “balds,” found at this high altitude, which can only be found via the most scenic hiking route up the mountain and through gorgeous garden tunnels. In spring, travelers can see what makes the Craggy Gardens extra special: the show-stopping display of colorful wildflowers that bloom along these high slopes. On this road trip, adventurer Sharon revisits one of her favorite places from her past travels, and reaches the top for a stunning view of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Craggy Gardens Trail - The Blue Ridge Parkway, N.C. August 2019
Last week we were in Asheville and exploring some of the trails that are off the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of those trails is the Craggy Garden Trail. It's about twenty miles or so north of Asheville. It's a short trail that takes you through a forest canopy and then up to a bald. Very interesting hike. Very beautiful hike. We give it a two thumbs up. Here's a short film of our experience....

Douglas Falls, Craggy Gardens, and Craggy Dome - Blue Ridge Parkway, NC
A hike in a popular Blue Ridge Parkway area with a few twists to increase the solitude factor. I parked at the Graybeard Mountain Overlook and hiked the Mountains-to-Sea Trail east to take the Douglas Falls Trail down into Pisgah National Forest. Douglas Falls, on a tributary to Waterfall Creek, is a low flow waterfall. However, the setting is spectacular as the creek free falls 70 feet over a massive overhanging cliff. It is easy to walk under and explore, and easy to get soaked standing at the base of the waterfall. Trust me, it was freezing cold.
Next I continued east on the MST to explore the famous Craggy Gardens. Craggy Flats, the high point in Craggy Gardens, is a mixed heath/grassy bald with huge stands of Catawba rhododendron. I missed the flowers this year, but they typically bloom in mid-June. There are wonderful views west and north of the Great Craggy Mountains, and without the haze probably the Great Balsams, Great Smokies, and Roan Highlands.
I returned to Graybeard Mountain Overlook, but just before the parking lot I took an overgrown manway to Craggy Dome, the tallest peak in the range at 6,080 feet. It was tough, a mountain laurel hell on top, but I saw a sweet snail!
Hike distance was 12.3 miles in 7 hours and 10 minutes.

Winter Arrives at Craggy Gardens, Blue Ridge Parkway, Oct 29, 2011
Winter days can be very harsh (and frigid) at Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC. It's often covered in rime ice as clouds sweep through at this 5,500 feet elevation. This section of the Parkway is closed much of the winter. For more info on Craggy Gardens, go to

MST DAY 11 Craggy Gardens - North Carolina Mountains to Sea Trail
Areas covered: BRP north of Asheville / Cravens Gap and Craggy Gardens
Specifically Cravens Gap to just past Craggy Gardens visitor center
Section comments:
After spending a nice long weekend at home, I got back on trail just north of Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Cravens Gap. This entire section included a fair amount of elevation gains as I not only had to get up Mt Mitchell, but also had to climb and then drop back down various knobs & mountain ridges along the way. Day 11 had me on trail & steadily climbing. I passed multiple day hikers out for a Sunday stroll, enjoying the nice weather and views. I made it to the Craggy Garden visitor center, where I loaded up 4 liters of water and watched the sunset. It was beautiful. I then hit the trail for less than a 1 mile to get onto national forest land & setup my hammock on the side of a hill maybe 10' from the trail. Not the best spot but it worked just fine. Day 12 I enjoyed watching the clouds from various knobs & capturing some nice time lapses. But it was a tough day, at least mentally. I had convinced myself to pick up the pace, and when the trail was rough & not allowing for that, I was a bit down on how long it was taking. I finally got to the Buncoombe Horse trail near Mt Mitchell State park, which was a flat, level old road - so it was a nice way to finish the day. I camped that night near Lower Creek, lose to Commissary Hill. I later saw warnings about bear activity in the area but never had any problem. I did get some pretty strong wind and rain that night, which thankfully subsided by the morning.
Day 13 I climbed up Mt Mitchell, which of course was windy & clouded in, but still alive with energy & the force the nature. I had hoped to get a coffee at the gift shop up top but that was closed. I hustled down to Black Mountain campground, as rain was in the forecast. I got a walk-in spot, and took a nice hot shower. I later met some fellow Hoosiers from Indiana and they shared some hot dogs while we sat around a campfire. Later than night, it poured, for the 2nd night in a row. The next 2 nights were forecasted for even heavier rain, as hurricane Michael rolled in from the south. So once again, even though I had the food to continue on, I decided to call in the cavalry to pick me up. My good friend, who I had exchanged a few messages with about the MST, offered to pick me up so I jumped on it.
