Entry Title: Champagne Celebrations
Entry:
Birthday times are always exciting. It is generally an excuse to hang out with friends you have not seen in a while and have a few celebratory drinks. This year my birthday was no exception with the extra bonus of being taken away for a mystery weekend to celebrate by my two friends, Kerry and Martin. I had no idea where I was going and it was very exciting when I was told that I needed to bring my passport!
Having received my packing list I was all ready to go, wondering where they would be taking me. I was like a little child at Christmas when I was told we were off to France to the Champagne region. What a great way to carry on celebrating my birthday --- with lots of sparkles in my glass :)
We effortlessly crossed the channel in our car through the Channel Tunnel Within 35 mins of having driven our car onto the train we were in France. To be fair the first entrance to France is not the most scenic but it gets better as you get on the motor way and start to see some of the countryside. It helped that it was a gorgeously sunny day with only a crisp wind. You could see that Autumn was on the way as every now and then trees and bushes had a sprinkling of light gold and orange, making the drive seem more beautiful.
By lunchtime we had reached Reims our destination for the weekend. Reims is considered the champagne capital of France and lies in Champagne-Ardenne region (the official name) in northeastern France some 129km northeast of Paris. The architecture of the city is very Gothic in some parts and modern in others. Unfortunately the city is full of road works as they are currently building the new light train in the city. It is only due to be finished in April 2010, so if you are planning a visit I would make sure it is complete so you can fully appreciate the beauty of the city.
We stopped for some lunch before exploring the city at Ernest Hemingway's on the main shopping street. A lovely atmosphere bustling with people we spotted the huge hamburgers and made it our instant choice. To be fair with my non-existent french it was the safe choice but word of warning for those not familiar with french cuisine - the hamburger is made of mince meat and generally does not come cooked. So a little disappointing especially as the middle was a bit cold - yuk.
It was then off to explore the city and of course see how champagne is made. I did find it bizarre that a lot of the bigger Champagne house were in the main city as I had expected it to be like most of the wine farms surrounded by vineyards, but here we were in a city walking around unknowingly at first above some of the most expensive champagnes that are stored in the underground tunnels of the abbey. Our first champagne house was Taittinger where we heard all about the art of Champagne making. Made from the C******nay grape it can only be classed as Champagne if made in the specified region and according to a set process called 'methode champenoise'. Their cellars are some 30m below the ground surface and are kept naturally cool due to the chalk rock sediment. Our tour ended with a delicious glass of Taittinger Brut Reserve.
In to the swing of things now, we freshened up at our hotel before making our way to the balcony of Le Lion to relaxingly sip some Canard-Duchene while watching the Golden Angel of the Sube fountain glisten in the sunlight. Dinner at Bistrot de Boucher was a great end to the evening as we sampled Foie gras, honey coated duck and peppered steak but not before starting our dinner the french way with a glass of Kir Royale.
It was our last day in France and our Champagne exploration was not over. We headed off to Epernay the next Champagne capital in France to visit the famous Moet & Chandon, explore the cellars situated on Champagne avenue and of course get a picture with the ...

Events in France: The Beaujolais Run 2010 - Macon to Reims - Hotels.tv
Competitors awoke in Mâcon and passed Beaune heading for Champagne. All teams made good progress to Reims as they knew a treat was in store...
As the sun went down on Reims, teams were escorted to a stunning Taittinger owned venue; most famous for entertaining the Kings of France and visiting heads of state.
Vitalie Taittinger led teams through five different wines accompanying a sumptuous dinner and a gastronomy and Formula One themed charity auction. During dinner John Surtees praised teams for their fundraising efforts and gave an evocative insight into the role France played in his epic career. John was accompanied by his family who thoroughly enjoyed being part of the evening and were only too pleased to accept The Beaujolais Run 2010 Burlington shirt which includes Henry's helmet illustration on the sleeve.
Expectations were running high as the time for prize giving arrived. Angus Hughes and Owain Lloyd of Shaken But Undeterred took P2 for the GT1 Maps Only navigation class. Winners of P2, Any Assistance, were Oliver Smith and Emmylou Wherlock of More Dash Than Cash. The highly coveted P1 went to John Riley and Jeffrey Smith of Men in Black. This year the trophy attached to P1 was donated by Andy Wall of Sunpower father to James Wall who tragically lost his fight against cancer in April 2009. This wonderfully individual trophy will continue in perpetuity, known as the James Wall Trophy for the Highest Fundraiser.
Always a hotly contested award, L'Esprit du Cours went to Geoff Core and Phil Bubb of Encore Le Trognan (More Core) for their ingenuity in fundraising, their press efforts and showing the spirit to be Beaujolais ambassadors on the 'Run.
The Mitras proudly collected the Wooden Spoon Award having chalked up the most miles during day two's navigation trial.
Teams then retired to the 'Run's 'home bar and brasserie', Hall Place and Le Curtayn Club to end a high energy, albeit at times emotional, night.
Lost In Champagne
It's been a LIFE LONG dream to visit the champagne region of France. Here's some interesting facts for you:
- The city is actually called Reims, don't search for champagne on a map because it originally had me go somewhere else completely.
- Driving isn't exactly EASY in this part of the world, but it's beautiful
- Champagne, AT THE DOMAIN, is incredible!
- Champagne houses prefer you drink their bottles warmer than they typically are served in America. Turns out, they are right! They taste MUCH better at around 55 degrees than they do at 40-45 which is what most places serve it. It's much more flavorful, less like a slushy.
- The weather is beautiful, but apparently not all the time, so we got very lucky.
We had a blast in this area... and here's our official take on the champagne.
- Ruinart: Great champagne! It lives up to the price they sell it for, and our tour guide was a cool guy. Definitely recommend stopping in for a tour if you can!
- Wafflart & Fils: We loved this! This was EXACTLY the type of place we wanted to find. Small production, still manually doing just about the entire process, and absolutely incredible champagne. We bought 3 bottles, our luggage didn't make it home so we'll see if we get to taste them someday, and if they held up.

The Beaujolais Run 2011 - Day 3
Competitors awoke in Mâcon and passed Beaune, before diverting to a small French village by the name of Prenois. It then dawned upon teams that they were being instructed to multiply lap Dijon's famous former Formula One circuit as an extension of yesterday's navigational trial! Turbos whined, superchargers howled and rubber squeeled as some of Europe's finest metal was let loose on the finest operational track in France. For many competitors it was their first time at Dijon, following in the footsteps of motorsport legends; Villeneuve and Arnoux who fought a memorable battle at the 1979 French Grand Prix.
The track closed at 1300hrs. All teams then made spirited progress to Reims as they knew a treat was in store...
As the sun went down on Reims, teams were transported to the home of Champagne Taittinger; Chateau de la Marquetterie, high on a hill, amongst the Champagne vineyards. Teams marvelled at the spectacle within the chateau as they sipped their aperitif; before they then retired to the wine press room. There they found Marshall Joffre's Paris limousine. An incredible 6 cylinder, 7.5 litre car from 1911. This remarkable car was the command vehicle of Marshall Joffre during the Battle of the Marne; effectively the forerunner to the modern scout car/modern off roader. Teams climbed into the vehicle, exploring its many historic and unique features during the course of the evening.
Clovis Taittinger led teams through five different wines; including the stunning Comtes Rose 2004, accompanying a sumptuous dinner and a charity auction. During dinner John Surtees praised teams for their fundraising efforts and gave an evocative insight into his epic career.
Expectations were running high as the time for prize giving arrived. Richard and Helen Slade; Team Kitty, in Billy their Jaguar XK150; took P2 for the GT1 Maps Only navigation class. Winners of P2, Any Assistance, were Julian Di Tomaso and Chris Boon of Full Bodied; behind the wheel of the off-roading Ferarri 360 Challenge Stradale! The highly coveted P1 went to Chris Bonvini and Dom McKay of Team Banana; an awesome achievement and in their first year on the 'Run.The wonderfully individual James Wall Trophy for the Highest Fundraiser (P1) continues in perpetuity; donated by Andy Wall of Sunpower, father to James Wall who tragically lost his fight against cancer in April 2009
Always a hotly contested award, L'Esprit du Cours went to Greg De Prow; who overcame an incredible array of challenges from start to finish. Greg flew in from Las Vegas alone; his first time in the UK and France, when his team mate tragically withdrew from the 'Run at the last minute, due to family circumstances. Greg's 'Run did not get off to the best start, as not only was he to travel alone; his car was stuck on the high seas outside Portsmouth, unable to dock! Whilst Greg set out alone in his hire car, the nature of the 'Run inspires a wonderful camaderie that meant Greg was surrounded by friendly faces who were keen to 'buddy up'; ensuring Greg was 110% part of the 'Run. Greg suffered a puncture en route. Helped by Team Banana in the Corvette, he was soon back on the road, but then a wrong turn set him back and he missed the coach to dinner at Chateau Chassleas on Wednesday. 'Run HQ left a note at the hotel reception, encouraging Greg to join the rest of the teams by taxi, which he did; entering the room during the meal to a rapturous round of applause! Greg's adventure did not stop there... He offered to return Shaken but Undeterred to the UK; following the spectacular expiry of their Lotus Esprit Turbo the day before. Greg showed true Beaujolais spirit throughout; leading to a unanimous nomination for this esteemed award by all teams.
Team Tigger; husband and wife team Sean and Anna Devaney in their Nissan 370Z proudly collected the Wooden Spoon Award having chalked up the most miles during day two's navigation trial.
Teams then transferred back to Reims, enjoying yet another wonderful treat; Jeroboams of Champagne Taittinger en route!
