Acadia National Park! PLEASE SUBSCRIBE:
For a three-day get-away on our 20th Anniversary, my wife and I drove to Acadia National Park in southern Maine. We stayed at a Bed and Breakfast called the Kingsleigh in Southwest Harbor (the same place we enjoyed on our honeymoon). We hiked several trails including the famous Beehive and spent time on Sand Beach and at the Jordan Pond House. This vlog shows the highlights from our time in Acadia National Park.

Cadillac Summit, Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park, Maine, United States, North America
Cadillac Mountain is a mountain located on Mount Desert Island, within Acadia National Park. With an elevation of 1,528 feet (470 m), its summit is the highest point in Hancock County and the highest within 25 miles (40 km) of the shoreline of the North American continent between the Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia and Mexican peaks 180 miles (290 km) south of the Texas border. The area first was inhabited by the Wabanaki people. In the fall of 1604, Samuel de Champlain observed a high-notched island composed of seven or eight mountains rising to bare-rock summits from slopes of birch, fir, and pine. Over four centuries later, the area remains essentially the same. The park is home to some 40 different species of mammalian wildlife. Among these are red and gray squirrels, chipmunks, white-tailed deer, moose, beaver (Castor canadensis), porcupine, muskrats, foxes, coyote, bobcats, and black bears. Many other marine species have been observed in the surrounding area and waters. Excavations of old Indian sites in the Mount Desert Island region have yielded remains of the native mammals. Bones of wolf, beaver, deer, elk, Gray seal (Halichoerus grypus), the Indian dog, and Sea Mink (Neovison macrodon), as well as large numbers of raccoon, lynx, wolf, muskrat, and deer. Although beaver were trapped to extinction on the island, two pairs of beaver that were released in 1920 by George B. Dorr at the brook between Bubble Pond and Eagle Lake have repopulated it. The large fire in 1947 cleared the eastern half of the island of its coniferous trees and permitted the growth of aspen, birch, alder, maple and other deciduous trees which enabled the beaver to thrive. Species that used to inhabit the island include the mountain lion (or puma) and the gray wolf. It is thought that these predators have been forced to leave the area due to the dramatic decrease in small prey and proximity to human activity.
Waking up at 1:30AM to HIKE - Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park - Maine Coast EP. 3
Dan and I decided that instead of driving to the top of Cadillac Mountain, we were going to do it the right way and make the sunrise hike in the dark for the real experience! We woke up super early and made it to the top in time to be one of the first in the US to see the sun. We rounded out the day with the sunset at the Bass Lighthouse for the full sunrise to sunset experience. Hope you enjoy!

Once upon a time on a perfect autumn day in Maine a family visited Acadia national park and climbed straight up the side of the fricken Beehive!
Great trip all around. I couldn't have asked for better weather or better company to hike the Beehive in Acadia. We hiked straight up Beehive and down the backside into The Bowl.
These are the days we live for.

The Beehive, Acadia National Park, Maine, USA
This GoPro video shows the second part of the hike up Beehive Mountain, where the hike turns into a lot of boulder scrambling, aided by iron rungs that have been added to the rocks. The small blue paint spots mark the trail.
The video was shot on Thursday October 17th 2013, the first day the park reopened after the US government shutdown.
Thunder Hole, Acadia National Park, Maine, United States, North America
Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole. This spot also offers gorgeous panoramic views of Otter Cliff, on the right or south side, Schoodic Peninsula in the far distance, and Sand Beach and Great Head to the left or to the north. Thunder Hole is a great place to stand and watch or sit and relax, taking in the spectacular sights, sounds and smells. One of the pleasant things that greets you upon arrival, depending upon the time of year, is the aroma of wild roses. Right next to the stairs that lead down to the ocean, are large groupings of wild roses or rose hips. Rose hips are a potent source of vitamin C, at least until they become dry or are processed. Note: The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus stops here about every half hour during normal seasonal daytime hours. The last bus leaves at 6:58 P.M. Check their schedule to verify.

Driving Acadia's Loop Road - Cadillac Mountain, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole - Acadia National Park
Our first day in Acadia National Park we drive the loop - checking out everything from Sand Beach to Cadillac Mountain! Our first stop was the visitors center, where we got the kids junior ranger books. Next, we hit Loop Road, the road that circles the park and takes visitors to all the main attractions. We dip our toes in the cool water at Sand Beach, listen to the waves at Thunder Hole, walk the nature trail at Jordan Pond and then drive up Cadillac Mountain to see the view. Acadia National Park is stunning and we can't wait to explore more!

Hiking Acadia National Park - Maine
After a 10-month absence from Youtube, and 20 years since I last visited, join me on a 3 day trip to Maine's Acadia National Park.
For this trip I concentrated on the Atlantic Coast area of the Eastern portion of the park, visiting areas such as Cadillac Mountain, Otter Cliffs, and Sand Beach.
My day 1 plan was to leave Blackwoods Campground after setting up and hiking the Ocean Path up to Sand Beach but the 8-hour drive was enough to call it a day once I arrived. The cliffs at the end of the campground path were definitely enough to keep my busy until well after Sunset.
Day 2 I visited Cadillac Mountain, going over Eagles Crag and Dike Peak on my out-and-back hike.
Day 3 started with a brisk road walk to the Ocean Path, which winds 2 miles up the coast to Sand Beach and passes both Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole on the way. I ended the day with an excellent climb up and over Gorham Mountain to close the loop back to Otter Cove (with a great shortcut!)
Words can't explain the inescapable beauty of this place, I just hope I did it some justice here.
Thanks for watching and pass this along to anyone you feel would be interested.

Total hiking distance for all days: 23.6 miles

The first few minutes might seem like they are shot on a potato phone but it will clear up. I didn't realize I was zoomed in on my camera until the next morning.

FIRST SUNRISE in the USA - Acadia National Park
In this video we make our way to our northernmost point on the east coast (Acadia National Park). While there we spent a few nights at the Walmart just outside the park which was filled with other travelers and even got to spend time in one of the campgrounds in the park. Some of the spots in the park we visited were beehive, sand beach and Cadillac Mountain along with many others. Cadillac Mountain sunrise at 9:10.

Top 8 Destinations in Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is one of the most incredible places you will ever visit. This national park is known by many as the crown jewel of the north atlantic coast. In this video, I want to share with you 8 of my favorite destinations within this park.
*UPDATE - I FORGOT ONE TOP DESTINATION!! BE SURE TO VISIT BAR HARBOR AS WELL FOR MORE MAINE CULTURE*
Bar Harbor Walking Tour Video:
Starting off with the first spot in acadia, Thunder Hole is an excellent location to see waves crash in to a hole in the rocks, where they make a thunderous boom and spash dozens of feet in the air. This is a destination in Acadia that does not require a hike, and instead can be reached via a parking lot across the road, or by taking the free Acadia National Park shuttle.
Secondly, make sure to stop by the Acadia National Park visitor center. I always recommend talking to a ranger or at least reading the signs in a visitor center so you can be aware of any closed trails, trail maintenance, dangers, as well as the positive things to look for like the history, geology, and biology of the park.
Destination number 3 is Gorham mountain trail, which brings you up to a 525 ft. elevation summit with spectacular views over the coastline. Unfortunately it was crowded during my visit, but this view was still impressive
The fourth destination is Bass Harbor Head Light (lighthouse) which is the iconic short red light house. This light house is historic and offers a beautiful view of the Maine coastline. this is a symbol of Acadia National Park and should not be skipped!
Be sure to indulge in the north atlantic costal culture with some fresh lobster purchased from a local fisherman. Be sure to not pay too much at mass retailers, and instead buy directly from the fishermen.
Destination five is Jordan Pond, Jordan House, and the surrounding carriage trails. These trails are perfect for hiking, biking, and exploring the beautiful nature without much strain. The pond and house offer unique scenerey, and a full service restaurant. If you are looking to go out to eat, I recommend either going to the Jordan Pond House, or perhaps Bar Harbor (
Destination six is Penobscot mountain. I chose the Jordan Cliffs hike to the peak because it is less crowded than Cadillac mountain, and offers an equally amazing view. If you are not up for this hike, you can drive to the summit of cadillac mountain on a non-crowded day (or early in the morning to be the first people in the US to see the sunrise!) Jordan Cliffs Trail is probably the most strenuous hike I encountered in Acadia, so be sure to only take this trail if you are an experienced hiker, and if the rocks are not slippery
Destination seven is a ride along park loop road. I recommend either rifding the free shuttle, or driving this loop to see most of the park
Number eight then is Bubble Rock. This iconic boulder balances on the edge of a cliff. Bubble rock was moved many miles by glaciers long ago and weighs more than two african elephants. This is a must-see and is only a 1 mile hike to the summit.
Thank you for watching!! I hope you enjoy your trip to Acadia National Park!

Fast Bike Ride Down Cadillac Mountain - Acadia National Park
Rode my bike down from the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor Maine. There is a slight uphill at the beginning, then the full-on downhill starts ate about 1:08. I may have been exceeding the speed limit slightly. This was on my homemade cyclocross/gravel bike with CX tires. I would have loved to have had my road bike with race tires. Maybe next time. Not knowing the corners, I actually took it relatively easy, not wanting to fly off the side of the mountain. The video was shot with my Sony point and shoot camera taped to the handlebars with electrical tape. LOL!
BTW, I know my top speed and I am taking the 5th.
FYI, I did this at 8:30am. They recommend cyclists who want to ride the mountain come early in the morning or later in the day when car traffic is light.

Acadia National Park
Recorded September 23, 2016
Maine's Acadia National Park reserves much of Mount Desert Island, and associated smaller islands, off the Atlantic coast. In this video I explore the oldest American national park east of the Mississippi River on a gloomy day.
