History
Long used for mining and grazing, it did not become a city of Phoenix possession until 1959, when the area was annexed and a long-term lease agreement was signed with the state of Arizona. It later became one of the major rallying points for mountain preservation efforts.
Geology, flora and fauna
While the actual rocks of the Phoenix Mountains (including the areas around Piestewa Peak and North Mountain) are very old, the mountain shapes are, geologically speaking, quite young. They were formed about 14 million years ago as the crust of the earth was gradually stretched from northeast to southwest, elevating mountain ranges and downdropping the basins between them. Much of the area’s rock is a metamorphic type of granite known as schist. Mercury mines were worked in the area of today’s Dreamy Draw Recreation Area.
Flora in this area is typical of the lower Sonoran Desert and includes almost all varieties of Arizona cactus such as saguaro, barrel, hedgehog, pincushion, jumping cholla and prickly pear. Trees and colorful shrubbery include palo verde, mesquite, ironwood trees, creosote (dominate), ocotillo, brittle bush, desert lavender and giant sage shrubs.
Reptiles and wildlife that thrive in the preserve are gila monster, horned lizard and chuckwalla. Hikers also can encounter rattlesnakes. The mammal population includes coyote, jackrabbit, cottontail rabbit, ground squirrel and kit fox. There are more than 54 species of birds from the turkey vulture to mockingbirds, cactus wrens, Gambel’s quail and several species of owls and hawks.

Places to see in ( Phoenix - USA )
Phoenix is the capital of the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona. Known for its year-round sun and warm temperatures, it anchors a sprawling, multicity metropolitan area known as the Valley of the Sun. It's known for high-end spa resorts, Jack Nicklaus–designed golf courses and vibrant nightclubs. Other highlights include the Desert Botanical Garden, displaying cacti and numerous native plants.
Phoenix is the capital of the state of Arizona as well as the most populous city in the American Southwest and sixth largest city in the United States. Founded in 1871, it has become the region's primary political, cultural, economic, and transportation center. At an elevation of 1100 ft (335 m), it is situated in the biologically unique Sonoran Desert. Over time it has merged with the neighboring cities of Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert to form the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Currently exurbs such as Apache Junction, Fountain Hills, Queen Creek, and Sun City are becoming part of this metropolitan area as well. Phoenix is extremely hot in the summertime, so always have sun screen with you.

Hiking Charles M. Christiansen Trail #100, Phoenix, AZ
Charles M. Christiansen Trail #100, is 10.8 miles across the width of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, from Tatum Blvd. to Mountain View Park in Sunnyslope. Every sunny view of Piestewa Peak, North Mountain or Shaw Butte, is balanced with one of a freeway, a left behind dog doo bag or a homeless nest. But mostly its good. ????

Rattlesnake, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, AZ
Rattlesnake on Charles M. Christiansen Trail #100 in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. It was more obvious to the naked eye. Definitely not a Western Diamondback. I think it was a Tiger Rattlesnake (Crotalus tigris) rather than a Speckled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) as it was more tan, than reddish, and the bands were black more towards the tail. I think it was a juvenile, as the rattle was light enough I at first thought it was bees. ;-)
Come Ride Show Low, Arizona's Secret Trails With Me!
This is a video of me descending a trail called Naked, which is a historic forty year old piece of singletrack located within the Buena Vista Trail #637 loop. Located in Show Low, Arizona, this trail system is one of the best in Arizona and deserves the recognition and preservation of the United States Forest Service. I share here less because I think anyone is interested in my own riding, but more to make the trail system better known and more utilized. The USFS, left to their own devices, would like to complete a land exchange which would allow private developers to destroy not only this trail, but much of the historic trail system within the Buena. The more people we have using this trail system the better at this point. The trails are secrets no more, and are being heavily used by bikers, hikers, and equestrians.

Arizona's Hardest Gravel Ride
This is the toughest gravel ride that we have done to date. Starting in the Sonoran Desert near Punkin Center Arizona we followed FS Road 60 for 28 miles to the intersection of SR 288 (Young Highway) and climbed an additional 10 miles before returning via the same route. 76 miles of the toughest climbs in Arizona with over 10,000 feet of climbing.

Mountain Biking Toothaker and Rainbow Valley | Estrella Mountains, Arizona
Highlights from my mountain bike ride on the Toothaker and Rainbow Valley trails at the Estrella Mountains. This little loop is usually one of my favorites, but it was a little different this time. Due to the recent monsoons, the trail was really loose and a lot more chunky than usual.
With that said, I find it best if you start at the trailhead and work your way up Toothaker and back down Rainbow Valley. The route provides a nice long descent which makes the climb well worth it! As always, if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below.

SNOW IN ARIZONA | SHOW LOW TRIP
Hi friends!
For the last few days of winter break, I went to Show Low to visit the snow! A lot of my friends from different states had no idea that it snowed in AZ. I live in the Phoenix area (where it does not typically snow), but it does snow in Northern Arizona. Going to Show Low was the best way to end break and I had so much fun!
