In the 19th century, James Duff, 4th Earl Fife, established Dufftown as housing for soldiers returning home from the Napoleonic War.. Dufftown's notable buildings include Balvenie Castle, which was partly built with stones from the ruins of nearby Auchindoun Castle. The street plan of Dufftown is mainly four main roads meeting at the clock tower; previously a prison but now a tourist information centre. Dufftown is located on the River Fiddich and is the location of several Scotch whisky distilleries. It produces more malt whisky than any other town in Scotland. George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen, was born in Dufftown on 5 June 1829. He was the son of William Stephen, a carpenter, and Elspet, daughter of John Smith, a crofter at Knockando, Moray. He wwas known as Sir George Stephen, Baronet, between 1886 and 1891, was a prominent Canadian businessman. He made his fame in Montreal and was the first Canadian to be elevated to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was the financial genius behind the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway.. He died on 29 November 1921. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Urquhart Castle to Balvenie Castle, Dufftown - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Nine
In this episode we travel from Loch Ness to Balvenie Castle in Dufftown.
Originally known as Mortlach, Balvenie Castle was built in the 12th century by a branch of the powerful Comyn family (the Black Comyns) and extended and altered in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Balvenie Castle served as a garrison during the Jacobite rebellion. It was abandoned in 1720s but was briefly garrisoned by Government troops in 1746.
The tower in Dufftown was previously a prison but now serves as a tourist information centre and clock tower.
As well as Balvenie castle, Dufftown is also the home of the Glenfiddich distillery and produces more whisky than any other town in Scotland.

Huntly is a town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, formerly known as Milton of Strathbogie or simply Strathbogie. It had a population of 4,460 in 2004 and is the site of Huntly Castle. Its neighbouring settlements include Keith and Rothiemay. Both Huntly and the surrounding district of Gordon are named for a town and family that originated in the Border country.
Huntly is the historic home of the Gordon Highlanders regiment which traditionally recruited throughout the North-East of Scotland. Huntly has a primary school (Gordon Primary) and a secondary school (The Gordon Schools) beside Huntly Castle. There is an active cultural centre called Deveron Arts.
It is the home of the Deans bakers, which produce shortbread biscuits. In November 2007, Deans of Huntly opened their new visitor centre. There is also a falconry centre just outside the town which does flying displays in their visitor centre during the season between April and October.
There is salmon and trout fishing on the Rivers Deveron and Bogie, which are administered by the River Deveron Salmon Fisheries Board. Its other principal outdoor activities include golf, Nordic Skiing in Clashindarroch Forest, walking, mountain biking and Rugby. The local football team is Huntly F.C.. Nearby is the start point of Scotland's longest horse ride trail, Highland Horseback, which runs 200 miles to the West Coast. The Eastern Tigers martial arts have a kickboxing club in Huntly and currently use the Pensioners Hall and the Stewarts Hall. They have produced national and international champions.

Tomintoul is a village in the Moray council area of Scotland; until 1975 it was in the county of Banffshire. It is said to be the highest village in the Scottish Highlands, but at 345 m is still much lower than the highest village in Scotland. The village was laid out on a grid pattern by the 4th Duke of Gordon in 1775. It followed the construction, twenty years previously, of a military road by William Caulfeild – now the A939. By 1841 the parish reached a population of 1,722. In 1951 this had fallen to just 531. The 2001 census reveals a village population of 322 with the total parish population now unavailable.
The 2004 film One Last Chance starring Kevin McKidd and Dougray Scott was filmed in the village and the areas around it. Despite its small size, it is on the famed Whisky Trail, which also includes Dufftown, Keith, Tomnavoulin, and Marypark. The surrounding countryside forms the Glenlivet Estate Tomintoul Golf Club (now defunct) was founded in 1897. The club and course disappeared at the time of WW2.
The Gordon Arms Hotel saw significant improvement in the 1990s when it was lavished with funds from the media-styled 'Lord Tony Williams'. It is a myth that villagers referred to Tony Williams as 'Lord': this was a media invention. Chiefly of interest to genealogists, James Stuart (1791–1874), a local farmer at Lynchork (pronounced Linnahork) appears in a number of birth, baptism, death and Kirk Session records in this and surrounding parishes as the admitted or reputed father of children of his female servants.
Grigor Willox was a reputed white witch who lived in Tomintoul in the 18th century. He was said to derive his powers from two amulets: a brass hook from a kelpie's bridle and a mermaid's crystal. Among his alleged powers were making cows produce milk, curing barren women, and detecting thieves.

Elgin is a former cathedral city and Royal Burgh in Moray, Scotland. Elgin is the administrative and commercial centre for Moray. The town originated to the south of the River Lossie on the higher ground above the floodplain. Elgin is first documented in the Cartulary of Moray in 1190 AD. It was created a Royal Burgh in the 12th century by King David I of Scotland and by that time had a castle on top of the present day Lady Hill to the west of the town.
The modern town straddles the River Lossie, with the suburbs of Bishopmill to the north and New Elgin to the south. Permo-Triassic rocks, rare in Scotland, are commonly found around Elgin. These are composed of aeolian sandstone formed when this area was subjected to desert conditions. Quarry Wood, on the town's edge, has a formation nicknamed Cuttie's Hillock which produced the internationally known fossils called the Elgin Reptiles. In the Elgin district, boulders belonging to the lowest group of Jurassic strata, Oxford clay and chalk are found both in glacial deposits and on the surface of the ground. The largest of these deposits is at Linksfield, where limestone and shale lie on boulder clay. There is a large hill in downtown Elgin, often viewed as the highlight of the Elgin tourist trail.
Elgin is situated on the A96 trunk route which connects the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness. Heavy traffic through the town causes serious congestion. Scottish transport minister Tavish Scott visited the town in August 2006 to look at the traffic management problems and to meet campaigners for a bypass. It is estimated that a bypass would remove about one third of traffic from Elgin's streets. The A941 runs from Lossiemouth through Elgin to Rothes, Craigellachie, Dufftown and Rhynie. Elgin railway station is operated by Abellio ScotRail. The railway also connects to Aberdeen and Inverness which have trains to other UK destinations. Elgin's bus station is operated mainly by Stagecoach, and provides services within Elgin and to other local towns as well as to Aberdeen and Inverness. There is a 'Jet' bus service which runs to the Inverness Airport at Dalcross, Inverness has flights to mainly UK destinations while Aberdeen airport has UK and international flights.

The Queen and Royal Family arrive at the 2019 Braemar Gathering with massed pipes and drums parade
Her Majesty The Queen, The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (as Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales and Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall are known when in Scotland) as well as Peter Phillips and his wife, Autumn, arrive at the 2019 Braemar Gathering in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. After being presented with flower bouquets, the massed bands march into the games arena.
Led by leading Drum Major Roland Stuart, the pipe bands were Huntly & District, Fraserburgh RBL, Lower Clyde, Gordonstoun School, Inverurie, Perth & District, Blairgowrie, Ballater & District, Lonach, KIntore, Ellon & District RBL and RAF Central Scotland Pipes & Drums. The tunes are Scotland the Brave, Flett from Flotta and Wings.
Her Majesty is patron of the Highland games event, which are held at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, a short distance from the royals' summer residence Balmoral. The Games have been run in its present form since 1832, and the always held on the first Saturday of September. Queen Victoria first attended the gathering in 1848 and since then the reigning monarch and other members of the Royal Family have regularly visited.

Remembering the 1715 Jacobite uprising on the Braes o' Mar (Braemar) in Scotland, Sept' 2018
The events of September 1715 are remembered in Braemar with a costumed Jacobite ceremony on the land where the uprising began, now the Invercauld Arms Hotel. The Jacobite standard is raised and a wreath of white roses laid at the stone commemorating the event. Afterwards the assembled Jacobites join a parade through the village of Braemar, led by Newtonhill Pipe Band and their Drum Major Domhnull McLennan.
In 1714 the new Hanovarian king George I had no direct claim to the Scottish throne, so on his accession the Earl of Mar, who had been stripped of his office of Secretary of State, become the prime instigator and organiser of the Jacobite rising of 1715. He raised the standard of James VIII on 6th September 1715 in Braemar village, assisted by John Farquharson of Invercauld, on the land where the Invercauld Arms now stands. After a disastrous short campaign, the revolt ended in failure at the Battle of Sheriffmuir and the Earl of Mar, owner of Braemar Castle, fled to France, while Farquharson was imprisoned in Marshalsea in London.

New Aberdour to Aberdeen - The Scottish Adventure - Episode Eleven
After realising we were running over three hours late again we decided to head straight from Aberdour beach to our camp near Aberdeen, our new route would see us travelling southwards inland through the villages of New Aberdour, New Pitsligo and Mill of Elrick before heading directly through the centre of Aberdeen, which is always a good idea during rush hour! And then on to our camp near Maryculter which is a suburb of Aberdeen.
