A Tour of Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza
The plaza was established on March 9, 1978, by the Arizona Legislature in honor of Governor Wesley Bolin, who had died a mere 5 days previously on March 4. Prior to the resolution creating the plaza, it had simply been a part of the Legislative Governmental Mall. While the plaza exists only as a part of the Mall, in common usage the terms are interchangeable and the name of the plaza is often used in preference to the Mall.
Much like the National Mall on which it is loosely based, the Legislative Governmental Mall is intended as an open-air public space featuring monuments, memorials and gardens. Some of these monuments were erected prior to the inception of the Plaza, such as the monument to the USS Arizona which was dedicated over a year earlier on December 7, 1976. The Plaza, when dedicated, included these existing memorials and all subsequent memorials have been located within the boundaries of the plaza.
Also located in the Plaza is the memorial dedicated to the 158th Infantry Regiment, the oldest and most prestigious unit in Arizona. The monument, based off a captured Japanese monument in the Philippines, stands as one of the few if only memorials to the regiment which served as one of the premier unit of World War II.
Owing to its location directly in front of the state capitol, the plaza has also become a meeting place and a focal point for protests and demonstrations, such as the 2006 United States immigration reform protests, with Phoenix participants culminating in a rally at the plaza. Over 100,000 participants took part in the display.[2][3]

Among the more prominent are the mast, anchor, and a 14-inch gun of the USS Arizona, memorials to major wars such as World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and Desert Storm, and America's first monument of the Bill of Rights.

Arizona wine industry sipping on success
Twenty years ago Rod Snapp decided to open a winery in Cornville a little less than two hours north of the Valley. His friends thought he was just nuts, and Snapp admitted he never expected the business, Javelina Leap, to grow like it did.
Ducks in the Desert: Arizona Wines
Vineyards might not be the first thing you think of when Arizona comes to mind, but the Grand Canyon State's wine industry is gaining momentum. There are now 63 wineries in the state, but not in the Valley of the Sun. Instead, winemakers planted their grapes in the higher elevations.
Pillsbury Wine Company ~ Uncorked
Pillsbury Wine Company is the evolution of a Dream-Come-True project by NZ Film Director Sam Pillsbury.
Growing up in NZ Sam witnessed the phenomenon of growing classical wine grapes in unusual places. On a camping trip in Arizona thought he could try the same thing here.
The location he picked was a high-altitude desert valley in Cochise County, 200 miles SE of Phoenix. This all came from a desire to get away from mass-produced 'McDonalds' wines and create a distinctive regional Boutique wine that was 100% Arizona and 100% original. He gambled that the high-altitude, endless sunshine, sandy loam and dry desert would make for a perfect Terroir, and in 2000 he planted 20 acres of Rhone varieties at 4300 ft in Cochise County.
His first wines under the Pillsbury label got a 93 from Iron Chef Mark Tarbell in the AZ Republic, a 'Best AZ Wine' from the San Francisco Examiner, a rave from trendy Eateraz blog stating that these 'are the first wines we can say make Arizona wines taste like incredible wine!'
He now grows Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Symphony, Rousanne and Chenin Blanc.
In the last 4 years he got 'Best Local Winemaker' from Phoenix Magazine, the Wine Spectator called him one of the 'Rising Stars of the Southwest', giving the 2007 Pillsbury Petite Sirah 89.
Recent accolades include a Gold and 2 Silvers for the 2010 Rosà ©, a Ribbon of Distinction for the 2010 Viognier and Shiraz, and 'Best Arizona Winery' from Arizona Foothills Magazine. Jancis Robinson in her new book 'American Wine' wrote that he makes 'some of Arizona's finest wines.'
