The Truth - July 2018 Colorado High Country Fly Fishing - Duranglers Flies and Supplies
With all the doom and gloom filling our minds through news articles and social media feeds, sometimes we need to head for the hills. It's an imperative, a vital mental reset. A must for the rejuvenation of our emotional state.
What we usually find tends to be the opposite of all the doom in the news. It is a story of life, full of growth, and truth!
Truth is simple, and we need it. News comes and goes. Truth lasts.
The truth is this: summer is slipping quickly, and there are far too many waters left to be fished. The reality is that mountain wildflowers last only a few weeks. The truth is, that for the time being, trout are absolutely annihilating any bug unfortunate enough to fall in any backcountry water.
Good news, bad news, or fake news; sometimes you have to head for the hills to get no news, and find only truth.

Fishing the Animas in December! - Animas river in Colorado - McFly Angler Episode 37
In most parts of the United States, fishing in the winter is something that is not possible. Either snow covers the ground, or fishing is not very productive. But not so in southern Colorado or northern New Mexico. Around here, you can practically fish year round. Granted there are a few days out of the year you probably would not want to be on the water, however there isnt really a specific season where fishing dies down.
So in December I only got to go fishing once, and that was on the Animas river. During the winter, the fish are more lethargic and therefor streamers are not quite the best bet for fishing. They dont want to chase swinging streamers. So nymphing is probably your best bet. Caddis pupae tend to be one of the more effective patterns to use during this time. And that is the fly I caught all my fish on. Other patterns to use are going to be copper johns, prince nymphs, and the various baetis nymphs as well. You want to fish slow, and relatively deep, as the fish are deep in holes just conserving energy. While some people are randomly productive with some dry flies, you really cannot guaranty fish on dry this time of year. You kinda have to be at the right place at the right time. So bring those dries along with you, but dont be disappointed if you never get to use them. Your best bet for catching will be on the nymph. At least that is my experience.
The fly I caught the most amount of fish on was called the GTI caddis. Here is a video on how to tie that.
Per request from many subscribers, I am listing the gear I used on this trip, with links to where you can purchase them.

Navajo Reservoir Fly Fishing
Navajo Reservoir in northern New Mexico (also known as Navajo Lake) offers is an extremely diverse fishery offering many cool fly fishing opportunities. Navajo Reservoir is contrasted against the world-renowned trout fishery of San Juan River Quality Waters that flow out of Navajo Dam that creates the reservoir. Unlike the trout fishery where small flies and light tippet are required to fool finicky fish, bigger predators hunt these waters.
With a healthy population of large pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, carp, and crappie; the adventurous fly angler has the opportunity to tangle with hard fighting fish on tackle often reserved for saltwater fishing. With spring pike that slam large streamers, bass on topwater, and summer dry fly fishing for cruising pods of carp; this is truly a unique fishery that has to be experienced to be believed.

Animas River Wading - With Fresh-Salt Fishing - McFly Angler Episode 27
If you remember a few weeks back, I went fishing the San Juan River with Fresh Salt Fishing, and we had a great time! We caught many Brown Trout, and one was really really large! They came back to fish with me, and we decided to hit up the Animas River. We had a float trip scheduled for the next day, however we had some time this day to wade the river.
Fishing the Animas can be tough. Its not one of those rivers that many people can go out and guaranty a boat load of fish. But when you catch one, usually its a very good sized fish. Mostly browns live in this river, and they are wild. They pull hard, and make you fight for every inch of line.
Keep in mind this river is very slippery, so if you come out, make sure and bring some wading boots with studs in them.
If you want to check out the video where we floated down the animas the next day, check it out here!
