Camelback Mountain Summit View - Phoenix, AZ 2013
During one of our AZ roadtrips, we visited and climbed Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, AZ, stopping for a hookah and wine break halfway up! We ascended 1,280ft to the summit via the 1.4 mile Cholla Trail, which took us a few hours roundtrip, and saw this gorgeous view of Phoenix from the top!

Camelback Mountain (O'odham: Cew S-wegiom) is a mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The English name is derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel.[3] The mountain, a prominent landmark for the metropolitan Phoenix valley, is located in the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area between the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix and the town of Paradise Valley. It is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing.
Phoenix Sonoran Preserve Hike - Phoenix, Arizona
Open desert park with miles of hiking & biking trails through lush, green plains of cactus. This parks largely consists of small mountains and adjacent foothills that reach about 2,000 feet (roughly 600 meters) above the desert floor. They also interrupt the checkerboard pattern of Phoenix's built environment and are quite prominent, especially since most of the city is flat and gridded.
It is important to remember that the Phoenix mountain preserves are open, undeveloped desert areas. Please use care when heading out as hikers routinely encounter rocky terrain, rattlesnakes and other potential hazards native to the Sonoran Desert.
Originally, the park system began with Piestewa Mountain Park and North Mountain Park as county parks. However, most of the existing municipal park system was acquired in the early 1970s when Phoenix's ever-expanding development threatened to encroach on these mountainous areas. All feature extensive hiking trails and many have public access areas with parking, ramadas (picnic tables) and restrooms. Some offer nearby horse stables where horses can be rented and ridden into the park.

Piestewa Hiking Trail | In One Minute
Surrounding the base of 2,608-foot Piestewa Peak, the Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area and Dreamy Draw Recreation Area are gateways into diverse desert landscapes that offer everything from fantastic views to secluded valleys. You don't have to fight crowds on the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail to enjoy the area -- the area boasts dozens of miles of trails to enjoy the glory of the Sonoran Desert in relative solitude. An assortment of picnic area nestled in the hills offer a picturesque spot for a gathering.
Highest Point
Piestewa Peak, elevation 2,608 feet. Total elevation gain for the summit trail is 1,190 feet.
History
Long used for mining and grazing, it did not become a city of Phoenix possession until 1959, when the area was annexed and a long-term lease agreement was signed with the state of Arizona. It later became one of the major rallying points for mountain preservation efforts.
Geology, flora and fauna
While the actual rocks of the Phoenix Mountains (including the areas around Piestewa Peak and North Mountain) are very old, the mountain shapes are, geologically speaking, quite young. They were formed about 14 million years ago as the crust of the earth was gradually stretched from northeast to southwest, elevating mountain ranges and downdropping the basins between them. Much of the area’s rock is a metamorphic type of granite known as schist. Mercury mines were worked in the area of today’s Dreamy Draw Recreation Area.
Flora in this area is typical of the lower Sonoran Desert and includes almost all varieties of Arizona cactus such as saguaro, barrel, hedgehog, pincushion, jumping cholla and prickly pear. Trees and colorful shrubbery include palo verde, mesquite, ironwood trees, creosote (dominate), ocotillo, brittle bush, desert lavender and giant sage shrubs.
Reptiles and wildlife that thrive in the preserve are gila monster, horned lizard and chuckwalla. Hikers also can encounter rattlesnakes. The mammal population includes coyote, jackrabbit, cottontail rabbit, ground squirrel and kit fox. There are more than 54 species of birds from the turkey vulture to mockingbirds, cactus wrens, Gambel’s quail and several species of owls and hawks.

It is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing.
History
A cave discovered on the north side of Camelback Mountain indicates that it was used as a sacred site by the prehistoric Hohokam Culture before they abandoned the area in the 14th century.[4]
In January 1879, United States President Rutherford B. Hayes included Camelback Mountain as part of a one million acre (4,000 km²) reservation for the Salt River Pima and Maricopa American Indian tribes.[5] Six months later, at the behest of Charles Poston, the Arizona Territorial Legislature reversed the decision in order to ensure the primacy of the 5000 non-Indian area residents as well as their continued access to Salt River water.[6]
Efforts to protect Camelback Mountain as a natural preserve began in the early 1910s. However, by the 1960s, nearly all of the area had been sold to private interests. Federal and state authorities attempted to stop development above the one thousand and six hundred feet level. They failed to halt development and in 1963 efforts to arrange a land exchange failed in the Arizona State legislature. In 1965, United States Senator Barry Goldwater took up the cause and helped to secure the higher elevations against development. The area became a Phoenix city park in 1968.[7]
The peak lends its name to a major east-west street in the Phoenix area called Camelback Road that starts in Scottsdale and goes about 34 miles (55 km) west past the West Valley suburbs of Goodyear and Litchfield Park. It starts again past the White Tanks.
Camelback Mountain is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.[8]
Geology
The mountain is composed of a geologic unconformity between two separate rock formations. The higher part of the peak is Precambrian granite (ca. 1.5 billion years old). The head of the camel is predominantly red sedimentary sandstone from the Chattian stage of the Oligocene epoch(ca. 25 million years old).[9]
Recreation
Two hiking trails ascend 1,280 feet (390 m) to the peak of Camelback Mountain. The Echo Canyon Trail is 1.14 miles (1900 m) and the Cholla Trail is 1.4 mi (2300 m). Both trails are considered strenuous with steep grades. The hiking path has dirt, gravel, boulders, and some handrail-assisted sections. The average hike requires a round trip time of 1.5 to 3 hours.[10]
The Praying Monk is a red sandstone rock formation which is used for rock climbing. Located on the northern slope, the formation resembles the silhouette of a man kneeling in prayer.[11] It rises approximately 100 feet (30 m) and the eastern face has several permanent anchor bolts for attaching a belay rope.[

Hewitt Canyon Road near Phoenix, Arizona - 04 April 2010
Trip date: April 04, 2010
Picture opportunity rating: 5
This dirt road is over 10 miles long and the scenery changes from mile to mile. The pictures you see are taken all over the points on the road. The real treat was when we found that hidden waterfall. It is worth seeing if you are in area.
Hiking Difficulty: Moderate - Strenuous
The road itself is not worth hiking. It is too long for what it is worth, ride your truck, bike or ATV. The waterfall is where the hiking begins. Since it is not a sanctioned trail you will have to make your own way. Careful it can get slippery.
Paved road: No, Take a truck if you have one. Sedans may not get through washes that cross the road.
Pass required for parking: No
Dog accessible: Yes

Alta Trail to Maricopa Peak, South Mountain, Phoenix, AZ hike
Hiking the Alta Trail from the San Juan trailhead to Maricopa Peak, in Phoenix Arizona's South Mountain Park. Had to start from Estrella Rd. in Laveen, as San Juan Rd. was closed off for some sort of event. Great 360° views from the Maricopa Peak summit, including the future location of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway. I believe the big bugs are carpenter bees. A few ocotillo and strawberry hedgehog, but otherwise flowers were scarce.

TOP 5 SCENIC AZ HIKES: #4 - Flat Iron
Top 5 beautiful and most scenic hikes in Arizona COUNTDOWN!
#4 Flat Iron, Mesa Arizona
The #4 spot goes to Flat Iron; While the view is amazing it is a difficult hike to accomplish and can become dangerous. once entering the mountain the trail quickly becomes steep and only recognizable by small markings hundreds of feet apart. The last 2,000ft require free climbing and can be very challenging to stay on trail.
This hike is not for the faint of heart, requires experience and make sure to bring plenty of water and good rugged hiking boots.
