Approaching El Capitan Peak in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, West Texas HD 1080p
Watch is video in 1080p!
Still Photographs sometimes don't show the scale and dimension of landscapes so I shot this video approaching El Capitan Peak. El Capitan is located in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Right behind El Capitan is the tallest mountain in Texas, Guadalupe Peak.
This video was show after a long and difficult 8.4 mile hike up to the top of Guadalupe Peak. It's tough but the view is worth it! You can see the curve of the earth from the top. I completed the hike up to the top in 3 hours.
The Guadalupe Peak Trail is 8.4 miles roundtrip and considered Strenuous. There is also a 11.3 mile round trip trail up to El Capitan which is rated Moderate. The trailhead for both trails (and more) is located at Pine Springs Campground.
Sub 5lb Backpacking - El Capitan - Guadalupe Mountains National Park
When I went to bed on night 1 of my trip, I felt as though I would head straight down the mountain in the morning. But when I woke up, I decided I'd head back up toward El Capitan, the iconic rock that is the leading edge of Guadalupe Range.
I went off trail to summit El Cap. It was one of the most wonderful and rewarding hikes I have ever done.
Climbing El Capitan in the Fog - Guadalupe Mountains National Park, TX
I hiked to El Capitan in the fog. It was my last of the main summits in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, completing the eight most notable peaks there. There are still several other less notable peaks that I want to climb there if I have the chance. Sorry there are no good views from higher up, but it was also neat to negotiate the off trail terrain without being able to see too far ahead!
Hiking The Bowl + RV Camping | Guadalupe Mountains National Park
We spent a week exploring and hiking Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Our last hike was The Bowl loop hike. We hiked Tejas trail up and Bear Canyon down. It was 8.9 miles (14.3 km), 2800ft (853 meters) of elevation and it took us 5.5 hours.
We stayed at the Pine Springs Campground inside the park. It has both RV spots and tent camping.

Van Horn, Texas to Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Texas 54 exits tiny Van Horn, heading north. The road gives you a great look at El Capitan and Guadalupe Peak for about a half hour before finally turning onto US 62/180 for the final few miles into Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Serious road geeks will also notice that this video begins at the western terminus of US Highway 90, which finishes its cross-country journey at Van Horn.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park - The Devils Hall
Day 4
On the last day of my trip to GUMO I hiked the Devils Hall Trail. I started very early; before the sun had come up. I had the entire trail to myself. I had a great time hiking through the wash and seeing the awesome rock formations. It was a great way to end the trip and was an amazing dayhike.

Hiking to The Bowl in Guadalupe National Park, Texas
When we first got to Guadalupe National Park the ranger told us the prettiest hike was the bowl. We really wanted to get to the peak so we did that first, but on our second day we took his advice and hiked the bowl. It was an amazing hike and well worth the 2500 ft of vertical gain. We did it in a loop connecting it with another trail. I am glad that we did that because the views coming back down the mountain were out of this world. This really was the best hike in Guadalupe National Park.
