Several cruise lines are releasing new cruise ships in late fall of 2019. 2020 is the perfect time to hop onboard these brand new vessels. Among the ships setting sail are Norwegian Encore, the final ship in the Breakaway-Plus class, offering new signature entertainment and dining. Carnival Panorama is also setting sail this December from Long Beach, CA.
Plenty of new ships are also debuting in 2020. Among our most anticipated ships is Scarlet Lady. This first ship from the brand new cruise line, Virgin Voyages looks to break the cruise mold with unique offerings, amenities, and entertainment.
Later in 2020, the second Quantum-Ultra class ship for Royal Caribbean, Odyssey of the Seas will debut. We are already booked on the inaugural cruise and are very excited for this newest class of ship.
Carnival Cruise Line is also releasing a brand new class of ship in 2020. Carnival Mardi Gras will be the line’s largest vessel, offering unique dining, entertainment, and new staterooms options.
Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, American Queen Steamboat Company, and MSC Cruises all have ships launching in 2020 that are worthy of a voyage as well. Not to mention, all the current ships that are undergoing extensive refurbishments like Oasis of the Seas.

The Disneyland Resort with 2 magical Theme Parks, Downtown Disney District, 3 Disneyland Resort hotels and an entire world of magic!
When Walt Disney opened Disneyland, the original Disney theme park, on July 17, 1955, he said he hoped it would be “a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” He famously observed: “Disneyland will never be completed…as long as there is imagination left in the world.”
Since 1955, the Disneyland Resort has welcomed more than 750 million guests. It has expanded to become an approximately 500-acre, world-class, multi-day, family vacation destination, complete with two renowned Disney theme parks, three hotels, and the exciting shopping, dining and entertainment district known as Downtown Disney.
Disneyland Park – Upon its opening on July 17, 1955, Disneyland introduced a new concept in family entertainment and launched the theme park industry. Disneyland presented 18 major attractions on its Opening Day including the Mad Tea Party, the Jungle Cruise, Autopia and the Mark Twain Riverboat, and it featured five themed lands: Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland and Main Street, U.S.A.
Today, Disneyland is an evolving 85-acre American institution featuring more than 60 adventures and attractions in eight themed lands, having added New Orleans Square in 1966, Critter Country (originally Bear County) in 1972 and Mickey’s Toontown in 1993. Construction on a future Star Wars-themed land began in 2016. Favorite Disneyland attractions include Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Tours, “it’s a small world,” Indiana Jones Adventure and the mountain range of thrill rides: Matterhorn Bobsleds, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Splash Mountain. Entertainment is presented throughout the park, with nighttime spectaculars, stage shows including “Mickey and the Magical Map,” “Remember… Dreams Come True” fireworks and the beloved Main Street Electrical Parade, returning for a limited time encore performance on Jan. 20, 2017.
Disney California Adventure Park – Since its opening in 2001 with such popular attractions as, California Screamin’ and Grizzly River Run, Disney California Adventure has been bringing adventure and fun to life with Disney storytelling magic... With the addition of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street in 2012, the park features more than 35 adventures and attractions plus distinctive entertainment and dining.
Disney California Adventure has grown from its original three themed lands – Golden State, Paradise Pier and Hollywood Pictures Backlot – to a total of eight lands including the 12-acre Cars Land and Buena Vista Street, “a bug’s land” (which opened in 2002), a renamed Hollywood Land, Grizzly Peak featuring the newly reimagined Grizzly Peak Airfield and the exciting new attraction Soarin’ Around the World, Pacific Wharf (all formerly parts of the Golden State area) and Paradise Pier.
Downtown Disney District –This lively, colorful, admission-free district of exciting restaurants, shops, and nightclubs is centrally located between the Disneyland Resort theme parks and hotels. The 20-acre, 300,000 square-foot avenue features approximately 50 distinct venues including AMC Theatres, Anna and Elsa’s Boutique, Catal Restaurant, Earl of Sandwich, Sprinkles, ESPN Zone, La Brea Bakery Café, Rainforest Café, Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, Tortilla Jo’s, Chapel Hats, Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria, WonderGround Gallery and, of course, the World of Disney store.
Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa
Featuring 948 rooms and 50 Disney Vacation Club villas, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel is the flagship hotel of the Disneyland Resort.
Disneyland Hotel
Significant new enhancements at the iconic Disneyland Hotel were completed in 2012, including re-imagined guest rooms, Disney-themed suites, a new restaurant and bar – Tangaroa Terrace and Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar – and a water play area with Monorail-inspired water slides.
Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel
A casually elegant 481-room hotel themed to the colorful “day at the beach” California seaside culture of fun, Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel features the whimsical Disney’s PCH Grill restaurant, a pool deck with cabanas and water slide.

Illustrating Thoreau's Maine Woods: A Photographer's Journey
Scot Miller discusses his seven-year project photographing northern Maine for his new book, The Maine Woods: A Photographic Journey Through an American Wilderness, which combines contemporary imagery with text from Henry David Thoreau’s classic essay collection, The Maine Woods (first published 150 years ago). He will also screen The Unexpected Journey, a short documentary about the making of the book.
Both Thoreau and Miller's journeys took place alongside the people and traditions of the Penobscot tribe, past and present. Special guest James Eric Francis, Sr., Director of Cultural and Historic Preservation for the Penobscot Nation, opens the evening with a presentation entitled, A Sense of Place: Henry David Thoreau's Wabanaki Perspective.

Rainbow River - The World's Most Beautiful River
UV protected sleeves:
Rainbow River Colombia
Located deep in the jungle of Colombia is a river like no other. On this Episode we reveal the beauty of the rainbow river.
Commonly called the river of five colors or liquid rainbow, the rainbow river or Cano Cristales has been dubbed the most beautiful river in the world. Located 174 miles or 280 km south of Bogota, Colombia’s capital city of over 8 million, the rainbow river lies deep in the jungle in the province of meta. This region of the country is thriving with biodiversity. Over 2000 plant species, 50 orchard, 1,200 insect, 550 bird, 100 reptile, 8 monkey species all exists as well as deer, cougar, anteaters and jaguars.
Getting to the river can be a difficult journey, a 27 hour drive south through Neiva and Florencia then east to La Macarena will get you there. The problem with this aside from the over 1 day straight of driving is this territory is inhabited by guerillas and pirates. The other more logical solution is to take a 1 and half hour flight from Bogota straight there, which is what most tourists do.
Still a dangerous region of Colombia, the small town of La Macarena was taken back by the government in 2009 and still has many armed troops stationed there. As you can see here on this map, la macarena is located in the substantial risk zone.
From town a trip into Serrania de la Macarena national park starts with a 1.8 mile or 3 km boat ride up Guayabero river, 6 mile or 10km drive in a 4x4 then a short hike to get to Cano Cristales. All in it’ll take over 5 hours to get there.
At first glance you’ll notice the incredible display of colors, this is from the macarenia clavigera a river plant unique to this area. The five colors of the rainbow river are red, green, white, yellow, and black which are all plant life not algae. This colorful river vegetation glows a bright red during perfect conditions between the wet and dry seasons in the months of September and November. The wet season has this river flowing too fast which clouds the bottom of the river from receiving sunlight which is essential for the plants to turn red. The dry season has too little water running down the river so you’ll need to be there during that short window of time to see it.
If you’re planning on making the voyage here, a few things to note. The temperature outside can get up to over 90 degree F or 32 degrees C. With that said sunblock and bug spray is banned in the area so you’ll want to bring some uv protective sleeves which we’ve linked down below. Airlines will also make sure you’ve been vaccinated for yellow fever at least 10 days before your day of travel. Malaria medication is a good idea as it is a real risk in rural, lowland Colombia. Only a certain amount of visitors a day can venture out to the rainbow river so you’ll either need to go with a guide or apply for a permit yourself which can take up to 3 days to receive. Most people tend to book in all trips that include flight, accommodation, food and transportation.
While the government of Colombia is doing everything it can to protect this rare and beautiful river, in 2016 the US oil company Hupecol Operation was obtained rights to do fracking in the area around Cano Cristales. If you’re not familiar with fracking it’s a highly destructive way of getting oil and gas out of the ground by injecting sand, water and chemicals at high pressure. It destroys underground water systems and the environment where it’s practiced. This idea of fracking near the rainbow river outraged the citizens of Colombia which resulted with the government suspending Hupecol Operatings fracking license in 2016. Fast forward a year later this soulless oil company is now suing the Colombia government for 28 million dollars.

La dolce vita - the sweet life - can be found especially in Bella Italia. Tamina Kallert also raves about the country where the lemons bloom. She takes the spectators once more to her favorite places: the Amalfi Coast and the Way of the Gods, the notorious Naples and the sunset to Capri. She remembers her Mediterranean cruise and the trips to Bari and the Caves of Sassi. Her dream beaches in Sardinia, her trip to Sicily, the climb to Etna and finally the volcanic Aeolian Islands are unforgettable.

The Old Red Trail
From mud to superhighway, Prairie Public's local production The Old Red Trail is an historical retrospective of the road we now know as Interstate 94.
It has been called many things. The Red Trail, the Red Line Trail, the National Parks Highway, North Dakota Highway 3, U.S. Highway 10, the Theodore Roosevelt Badlands Trail, Interstate 94 - a succession of names across almost a century, all describing an automobile transportation route extending well beyond the boundaries of North Dakota.
From east to west it stretches over the state's southern half, through the Red River Valley, up escarpments, across plains formed by glaciers, over the nation's longest river, across rolling plains through the rugged Badlands.
From its humble beginnings as a dirt trail to today's incarnation as Interstate Highway 94, it forms the major east/west route for auto travel across the state.

Tripping on Hallucinogenic Frogs (Part 1/3)
VICE heads to the Amazon on a hunt for its most hallucinogenic tree frogs.
Watch the rest here:
There is an Amazonian frog called Phyllomedusa Bicolor or the Sapo which I have been reading about for years. It is totally different from the psychedelic toads found in North America. The Sapo's venom produces an effect much closer to morphine than LSD, but really it's not like either of those things. It's a distinctly vomitous dissociative experience unlike anything else I've ever encountered.
There has been a lot written about the chemistry of the venom, and it has been said to have a diverse array of effects. Some people think it's a miracle opioid which will yield new non-addictive painkillers. Others think it's a super-potent stimulant and appetite suppressant, and even a strange psychedelic capable of tuning hunters on to the mindset of their prey. In the 80s researchers found one of the constituents of Sapo venom in the urine of autistic children, and developed an entire theory of autism around it.
I had to find out what this frog really does, but supposedly it cannot produce its venom in captivity. The only way to experience its unique trip is to travel down the Amazon River and catch one yourself, which is exactly what I did.
