The Natural Beauty of the Mendocino Headlands
The Mendocino Headlands surround the Village of Mendocino in Northern California. The headlands are a series of majestic, high rocky cliffs with sheer drops overlooking the Pacific at the mouth of Big River. Nine and a half miles south of Ft. Bragg and two miles north of the town of Little River in Mendocino County, Mendocino Headlands State Park has miles of trails through grasses and wild flowers and with views of crashing waves and rugged sea arches. Grey whales can be seen on their winter migration.
The Village of Mendocino was named after Cape Mendocino to the north in Humbolt County, which was named in honor of Antonio de Mendoza, who served from 1535 to 1550 as the Viceroy of New Spain. Before 1850, there was a Pomo village on the north bank of the Big River. It became a logging town in the 1850s, with the first post office opening in 1858. Among the first settlers in the town were New Englanders, Portuguese fishermen, and immigrants from Canton Province in China.
In the 1950s Mendocino began to be known as an art colony and since 1987 has hosted the Mendocino Music Festival in the summer.
The Historic Ford House is both a museum and the visitors center for the Mendocino Headlands State Park. Visitors can see exhibits on the logging of redwood trees and their shipping on doghole schooners. A collection of historic and natural history videos is available for viewing. Walks along the headlands and through the fields of wild flowers are led by docents. The house was built in 1854 by Jerome B. Ford, who is known as the founder of the city.

Californication is a portmanteau of California and fornication, appearing in Time on May 6, 1966 and written about on August 21, 1972, additionally seen on bumper stickers in the U.S. states of Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Oklahoma.
It was a term popular in the 1970s and referring primarily to the haphazard, mindless development that has already gobbled up most of Southern California, which some attributed to an influx of Californians to other states in the Western United States.
One of the most well-known uses of the word occurs in the Red Hot Chili Peppers's album Californication, which has a song by the same name. In the song are references to a Hollywood-driven exportation of culture are made with references to plastic surgery, war, population control, and natural disasters.
The concept is also familiar within the social sciences, and is understood as American cultural imperialism emanating from California. This Californication is a particular ethos packaged as a cultural commodity and broadcast throughout the world in order to penetrate into other cultures.
Californication as a pejorative was a culmination of sentiments known in the 1940s, typified by Stewart Holbrook, author and Oregonian columnist, who campaigned through the fictitious James G. Blaine Society against development and unchecked population growth. Similar groups—such as The Miller Society—jokingly promoted measures like building a 16-foot (4.9 m) tall fence all along Interstate 5 to prevent exiting between California and Washington, expelling non-native Oregon-born residents, and instituting a $5000 immigration fee.
In 1965, Eugene's first planning commission began to question decades of promotion by chambers of commerce and developers. It referred to a 1959 pro-growth development plan and rampant road building as All the way to San Jose—an allusion to freeways' decreasing neighborhood livability. Interstate 5 from California was completed the year before. Previously, the main route into Oregon from California was through twisty, two-lane U.S. Route 99.
Governor Tom McCall was interviewed by Terry Drinkwater and appeared on national television January 12, 1971, for his acclaimed conservation experience. Extemporaneously he said, Come visit us again and again. But for heaven's sake, don't come here to live. Soon, bumper stickers that discouraged migration to Oregon were widely seen: The famous radioactive vapors of the Columbia River will get you!, and Oregonians don't tan; they rust. The banner Don't Californicate Oregon became the symbol of James Cloutier's line of Oregon Ungreeting Cards, which carried sentiments such as Tom Lawson McCall, governor, on behalf of the citizens of the great state of Oregon, cordially invites you to visit... Washington or California or Idaho or Nevada or Afghanistan.
On November 7, 1972, in a statewide referendum, Colorado voters rejected a bond issue to fund the hosting of the 1976 Winter Olympics. The venue for the games would have been spread over 150 miles (240 km), and was widely viewed as license for unbridled development. As part of the opposition to the bond, the slogan Don't Californicate Colorado was coined, appearing on bumper stickers and placards across the state. This rejection by Colorado voters followed a trend in the western states to blame California-style mindless development for the urban growth problems experienced in states like Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and Oregon.
We are East Idaho: Lava Hot Springs
LAVA HOT SPRINGS — Take a drive along I-15 and pull off the McCammon exit south of Pocatello. Head east on Highway 30 for about 12 miles and you’ll run into a quaint little town with less than 500 people.
While most “outsiders” pronounce it Lav-uh (like Java) Hot Springs, locals tend to call home Lah-vuh. It’s a city nestled between two mountains with no fast food restaurants or stoplights, but one with plenty of things to do.
Once part of the original Fort Hall Indian Reservation, Lava Hot Springs was included in a treaty agreement between the Indians and United States Government in the late 1800s. Indians gathered here to bathe, rest and worship at the hot springs as the area was considered neutral ground shared by all tribes.
In 1902, an act transferred Lava Hot Springs to the State of Idaho for public use. Over the past century, the area has been discovered as a hidden gem in eastern Idaho.
“Swimming, floating the river and soaking in the hot springs – that’s what Lava is all about,” says Chet Davids, the Lava Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce President. He reports that around 429,000 people visited Lava in 2018 – around 10,000 more than 2017.
“There are definitely more people that travel through here with Interstate 15 and Highway 30. It gives people a direct hit over to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. We get a lot of traffic (and) a lot of tour buses come through.”
The draw, of course, is the hot springs consisting of five pools full of natural mineral water ranging in temperature from 102 to 112 degrees Fahrenheit. The Lava Hot Springs Foundation, an agency within the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, manages the springs and nearby swimming complex.
“We’re fortunate enough that we don’t have to heat it or cool it at all,” says manager Devanee Morrison. “They figure the flow rate is around 2.5 million gallons per day so that helps us with the cleanliness because it flows so quickly.”
The springs are open every day of the year except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some locals soak twice each day and on weekends, the pools are packed – no matter the weather.
On a recent day, air temperatures were in the single digits around 10 a.m. and a handful of visitors were keeping warm in each of the pools.
“We’re driving back to school from California to Montana right now so this was the last stop on our road trip,” Zoë Hall tells EastIdahoNews.com. She’s visiting the springs with her friend, Peter Mitchell.
“The natural ambiance of sitting in the hot water provided from our earth – it’s really cool,” Mitchell says. “It feels very nice and relaxing.”
A unique aspect about Lava Hot Springs is there is no sulfur smell, unlike other geothermal water springs around the world.

Quartzsite RV SuperShow, Desert Boondocking & A NEW Inverter! || Full Time RV Life
We did it! We made it to the 2020 Quartzsite Rv SuperShow in Quartzsite, Arizona. Quartzsite is a mecca for RVer's and a perfect place for desert boondocking with wide open spaces. Every year thousands of RV'ers descend upon Quartzsite, AZ for the RV Supershow, but there's so much more to it than that. With so much FREE BLM camping in the area, it's a great opportunity for group camping and camaraderie that you can't find anywhere else. YouTube creators and RV enthusiasts gather for the free boondocking, meetups, group campfires, rallies, educational opportunities and to take time for RV annual maintenance and upgrades. The big tent inside and out offers everything from suspension upgrades to onion slicers. We had an opportunity to visit with our friends at Battle Born Batteries, Lectric XP bikes, Progressive, Rocky Point MX, FMCA, Nature's Head and others. Everyone was here! In fact, it gave us the opportunity to upgrade our system to a Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger with the assistance of our friends at Battle Born Batteries - thank you Roni and Eric. Not only did they assist, but they came out to our campsite!! Having the Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger will make our coach act and feel like a regular sticks and bricks home. No more having to run the generator to use the Instant Pot! We are loving it.
Quartzsite in the wintertime is so much more than the RV show and has a tendency to get a bad rap when compared to big shows like the Tampa RV show and others. You come to Q for something more, something different. Those who come to Quartzsite year after year - get it! If you haven't been, you gotta go! Boondock with everyone and you'll discover the essence of what makes Quartzsite special. It's a Boondocker's paraside! FREE camping, what's better than that?

We vlog, blog and update social media with our RV travel experiences, advice and challenges with a goal of helping other RVers along the way - find beautiful places to stay and save money by seeking out low cost campgrounds and awesome boondocking sites.
