Holy Mass at the Minor Basilica of the “Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre” Shrine in Santiago
After his seven-hour stop in Holguin, the pope took off for Santiago, the country's second city -- dubbed the heroic city by the communist regime because Fidel Castro declared there on January 1, 1959 that his revolution had toppled dictator Fulgencio Batista. Francis is set to celebrate a mass at the Minor Basilica of the “Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre” Shrine in Santiago. The pope will leave from Santiago on Tuesday for the United States, where his itinerary includes stops at the White House, the US Congress and the United Nations General Assembly.

STORYLINE:
A statue of Cuba's venerated patroness, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, has travelled more than 29 thousand kilometres (about 18 thousand miles) around the Caribbean island in the past 16 months, in a pilgrimage commemorating the 400th year since the statue was found floating in South Eastern Cuba's Bay of Nipe by local fishermen.
On Friday, the Virgin's statue made its last stop at Havana's seaside avenue, the Malecon, before returning to the town of El Cobre on the island's southern tip 900 kilometres (approximately 560 miles) from the capital.
As the sun began to set over Havana, thousands of Catholic faithful gathered to pay their respects to the Virgin and to hear a mass given by Cuba's Cardinal, Jaime Ortega.
Among those in attendance was one of Cuba's Vice-Presidents, Esteban Laso, and the island's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez. It is not common to see such high-ranking communist government officials at Catholic events.
Miami's Archbishop, Thomas Wenski, who oversees congregations in the United States that have a large percentage of Cuban exiles in their fold, also attended the mass.
Cardinal Ortega called for unity, saying that the Virgin's message also holds true for Cuba's government.
I also believe, my dear brothers that have responsibility in the Cuban government, that this lesson from our mother and patron, the Virgin of Charity, is also speaking to you as she does to us, said Ortega. We need to work together, united for the good of the Cuban people.
Ortega also recognised Cuban President Raul Castro's recent gesture of releasing almost three thousand prisoners in time for Christmas.
In tribute to the fourth century of the finding of your blessed image, President Raul Castro has pardoned almost three thousand prisoners, said Ortega.
Most of the newly released are common criminals.
In the past year, the Catholic Church has played a key role in the release of political prisoners.
The Vatican has recently announced that Pope Benedict XVI will visit Cuba in the Spring of 2012.
