Everglades Holiday Park | Air Boat Tours Florida | Aligator Tour | Gator Boys
Airboat Tour- I was a guest at the Everlgades Holiday Park- All opinions are mine. Full review at:
More info on the park:
Living in Florida for twenty years, you’d think I would have seen an alligator by now, but no, I haven’t and neither has my family. So we were excited to go to Everglades Holiday Park and check out the gators! Plus, it is home to the to the Gator Boys Alligator Rescue, featured on Animal Planet’s hit show.
We went there on a Sunday morning and picked up our tickets for the AirBoat Tour. It was just a few minutes until they called our number and we walked down to the port where the boats are waiting for us. The tour boats depart every twenty minutes so you don’t get stuck standing out in the heat for long.

South Florida: We're living in an environmental disaster - Nat Reed
The Everglades Coalition Hall of Fame,
The maverick of Hobe Sound - St. Petersburg Times - May 30, 2004
(Excerpt) He's an icon for environmentalists in Florida and one of the chief champions of Everglades restoration, says Charles Pattison, executive director of 1000 Friends of Florida, an organization dedicated to growth management Reed helped to found. David Guest, a prominent environmental lawyer who has worked with Reed on Everglades and Lake Okeechobee lawsuits, makes him sound a bit like a Green Superman, fighting for truth, justice and an uncompromised ecosystem: At crucial moments in the great environmental battles in Florida, Nat Reed has suddenly appeared and struck the decisive blow.
Nathaniel Reed speaks about the controversy surrounding the Miami Jetport; interviewed Nov. 2 and Dec. 18 of 2000.
----
(Excerpt) Interior Secretary Hickel [ ] picks up his car phone starts to dial the chief environmental writer for the New York Times. And I said, I thought we were sworn to secrecy back there.' And Hickel says, Nathaniel, you don't understand. We are in the middle of one of the great environmental victories of all time. We can't keep it to ourselves.' Besides, once word of the decision was leaked, there would be no turning back. . . .

His parents Joseph Verner (1902-1973) and Ruby Permelia (Pryor) Reed (1906-1994) developed Jupiter Island, Florida. They were friends of Dorothy and Sen. Prescott Bush. Joseph Verner Reed Sr. was also a theater producer and a founder of the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Conn.
The Jupiter Island Story -
(Excerpt) In 1934, Joseph V. Reed purchased the other owners' shares in the Hobe Sound Company -- bought in 1933 for $25,000 -- and began a new period of Island development. The entire property remained under Reed family ownership until 1996.
---
(Excerpt) The rush to develop Florida in the early 20th Century resulted in the great loss of native habitats. Joseph V. Reed identified the need to protect the ecosystems at Hobe Sound and in 1967 established the Reed Wilderness Seashore Sanctuary.
====
(Excerpt) To create this astonishing private club, Joseph and Permelia Pryor Reed sold land only to those who would fit in. When George Bush was inaugurated President in 1989, Permelia's eldest son, Joseph V. Reed, Jr., was appointed chief of protocol for the U.S. State Dept., . . . Averell Harriman made Jupiter Island a staging ground for his 1940s takeover of the U.S. national security apparatus. It was in that connection that the island became possibly the most secretive private place in America.
Waterways Episode 269- Big Cypress National Preserve and Keys Canal Clean-up
If trekking through the River of Grass that is the Everglades seems daunting, there is an area connected to the Everglades that is very accessible. Big Cypress National Preserve has two main roads that run right through it. Interstate 75 and US Highway 41, more commonly called the Tamiami Trail, cut right through Big Cypress National Preserve providing travelers immediate access to one of the most amazing landscapes in south Florida. AND When canals lack circulating water, the organic materials get trapped and decay, causing nutrient enrichment and low dissolved oxygen in the water column. . One big concern of elevated nutrient loads and lack of dissolved oxygen in canals is the effect on the surrounding near shore waters, seagrass beds and the hard bottom habitat. In 2013 Monroe County approved 5 millions dollars for canal restoration demonstration projects, which will provide county officials and resource managers with a clear picture of the feasibility, effectiveness and cost for future restoration planning. Directed by Erik Hutchins. Presented by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Everglades National Park and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

SUMMARY
=======
Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890 – May 14, 1998) was an American journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, she became a freelance writer, producing over a hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Its impact has been compared to that of Rachel Carson's influential book Silent Spring (1962). Her books, stories, and journalism career brought her influence in Miami, enabling her to advance her causes.
As a young woman, Douglas was outspoken and politically conscious of the women's suffrage and civil rights movements. She was called upon to take a central role in the protection of the Everglades when she was 79 years old. For the remaining 29 years of her life she was a relentless reporter and fearless crusader for the natural preservation and restoration of South Florida. Her tireless efforts earned her several variations of the nickname Grande Dame of the Everglades as well as the hostility of agricultural and business interests looking to benefit from land development in Florida. She received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and was inducted into several halls of fame.
Douglas lived to 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, an obituary in The Independent in London stated, In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

SUMMARY
=======
Everglades National Park is an American national park that protects the southern twenty percent of the original Everglades in Florida. The park is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States, and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River. An average of one million people visit the park each year. Everglades is the third-largest national park in the contiguous United States after Death Valley and Yellowstone. UNESCO declared the Everglades & Dry Tortugas Biosphere Reserve in 1976, and listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1979, while the Ramsar Convention included the park on its list of Wetlands of International Importance in 1987. Everglades is one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.Most national parks preserve unique geographic features; Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing 0.25 miles (0.40 km) per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. The park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere. Thirty-six threatened or protected species inhabit the park, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee, along with 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles. The majority of South Florida's fresh water, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the park.Humans have lived for thousands of years in or around the Everglades. Plans arose in 1882 to drain the wetlands and develop the land for agricultural and residential use. As the 20th century progressed, water flow from Lake Okeechobee was increasingly controlled and diverted to enable explosive growth of the South Florida metropolitan area. The park was established in 1934, to protect the quickly vanishing Everglades, and dedicated in 1947, as major canal building projects were initiated across South Florida. The ecosystems in Everglades National Park have suffered significantly from human activity, and restoration of the Everglades is a politically charged issue in South Florida.
