Cape Cross is a small headland on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia some 120 km north of Swakopmund. In 1486, the celebrated Portuguese seafarer and explorer, Diego Câo, erected a padrâo, which is a stone pillar topped by a cross, establishing his country's claim to the territory. He was searching for a sea route around Africa to India. The cross became a landmark and an important 15th century navigational aid known as 'The Cabo de Padrâo' and eventually Cape Cross in English. Many ships were wrecked on this barren Skeleton Coast over the 400 years after Cão landed.
It wasn't until 1884 that the first sightings of Cape fur seals were recorded off the coast of Southern Africa, substantiated by entries into the log book of the German cruise ship, the Möwe. When guano, the waste left by fish-eating birds used as fertilizer, was discovered in 1895, people began to settle in Cape Cross. Guano is an Inca word for a mix of eggshell, feathers, decayed corpses and bird excrement. It became so valuable, that it was called 'white gold' and to this day is harvested from platforms off Namibia's coast.
The coastline of Southern Africa is the only place in the world where you can find Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus, or the Cape fur seal, as they are more commonly known. They fight, mate, reproduce and fish in the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, home to the largest breeding colony of these seals on the planet, with at times up to 210,000 seals present during November and December.

South Africa's coloured community: 'Still marginalised after apartheid' - BBC Africa
South Africa’s coloured community, the official term for mixed-race people in the country, were alienated during the country’s apartheid regime.
Many in the community now feel that the current democracy also marginalises them – that they “aren’t black enough”.
Violent protests recently rocked coloured communities across South Africa.
Fed up with gangs, drugs and unemployment, residents took their frustration to the streets.
The BBC’s Vauldi Carelse went to find out what’s at the heart of this anger.

People have been living in these conditions for over 10 years now.

Where to stay in Cape Town
3 perfect accommodations for your Cape Town holiday
Check out Nelly blogpost:
We stayed for a week in Cape Town and tried 3 different accommodations in different areas and price classes. More or less/Reason being to create helpful content for other travelers and to get around more without stressing out about daily planning of trips etc..
It’s our second time in Cape Town and we decided to have a more relaxing holiday. I think one of the biggest benefits of changing hotels is, to explore differeint neighborhoods you wouldn’t usually go to as a tourist.
In Awe Stays Apartments
A HAPPY-PLACE AND HOME AWAY FROM HOME
The name is an indicator of the experience! In Awe Stays is a property in the calm neighbourhood oft the area „Gardens“ but just steps away from the quirky Kloofstreet. By entering the property, you get a very warm-hearted welcome and positive vibes straight away. We went for the „LOFT“ apartment and oh boy, what a good decision! It has an own terrace with Tablemountain-view, a huge windowfront for a every-day-wow-moment and the apartment is decorated with lots of love for details. The apartment is hip, modern-scandinavian and super cosy!
Oh, and did I mention the view?
Worth mentioning:
if you are a foodie, you are in the right place. There are so many good restaurants in the neighborhood and Kloof Stree.
Grand Daddy:
YOUR URBAN, HIP STAY
Big Chandaliers, a rooftop cinema and a touch of Gatsby – we are speaking of the Grand Daddy. I think someone mentioned the hotel belongs to a (former?) pilot who travelled the world and picked all details he liked about other hotels and added some “wow” to it to make it special. The Grand Daddy is different in a surprising and good way without attempting to be too glamourous. This is the perfect hotel for travellers who are looking for something different, urban and hip with a few hidden surprises. It’s for people who want to explore the local spots and part of the cities lifestyle. It’s uncomplicated and you are one step away from all the hotpots on Kloofstreet.
Watch our vlog to experience the place through our eyes and see why the people from the Grand Daddy made my day:
Worth mentioning:
I guess you didn’t stay in an Airstreamer on a rooftop so far? Me neither, but this is your chance to give it a try. On the top of the building you can book a stay in an Airstreamer. Best part about it? The Cocktailbar is next doors and in the evenings you can watch a movie at the open air cinema (of course they have popcorn as well ;))
Sea Star Rocks
IT HAS IT ALL AND MORE
I was quite impressed when I saw the pictures on the internet BUT actually entering the property leaves you speechless.
Sea Star Rocks is located on the beautiful Camps Bay side and it has it all: It’s luxurious and romantic without being too pretentious. The huge window fronts offer a stunning view to the bay, to Lions Head, to the Twelve Apostles and on the back to Table Mountain and it lets you think “Am I dreaming? Is this real life?” Indeed it is! This is the place you always dreamed of.
Starting your day with amazing breakfast with an incredible view? Watching the stars while relaxing in the outdoor hot tub? Enjoying yourself with a bottle of best South African wine while having great and inspiring conversations? They got you covered.
This place is the result of hard work and a fulfilled dream by the German owner Ardi. Listening to his story was so motivating and it seems he found happiness.
And if you are seeking for happiness and want to treat yourself go for the penthouse for the ultimate holiday experience. Two bedrooms, your own fitness studio, a fully equipped kitchen and a full front view of the Camps Bay area. Did I mention the piano in the living room?
I was already looking forward to this stay (it has been a few stressful months lately) and thanks to the owner Ardi and his charming team, staying here was so relaxing and energizing.
Seriously, this place has it all and more.
Worth mentioning:
Ardi, the owner of Sea Star Rocks, has two more incredible properties and as a passionate traveler he knows how to make your holiday stay unforgettable.
