Fondazione Prada | Condé Nast Traveller
In ultra-elegant Milan, Fondazione Prada has been an Italian institution since the 90s. Now the fashion powerhouse has moved into and revamped an early 20th-century distillery: the original buildings have been carefully restored and added to by the Dutch Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Perhaps the biggest draw is neighbourhood-hangout, Bar Luce, designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson with a 1950s-Italiano aesthetic (wood wall panels, pastel colours). TOUCHING FONDAZIONE PRADA BY OMA
Fondazione Prada / OMA (Rem Koolhaas, Chris van Duijn) in Milan opened 1 year ago. It was the extension of the existing industrial complex which is now holding some art exhibitions. At the moment, it turns to be the hippest place for design and architecture. Have you been there? what do you think?
From OMA website:
Located in a former gin distillery dating from 1910 in the Largo Isarco industrial complex on the southern edge of Milan, the new home of Fondazione Prada is a coexistence of new and regenerated buildings including warehouses, laboratories and brewing silos, as well as new buildings surrounding a large courtyard.
The complex aims to expand the repertoire of spatial typologies in which art can be exhibited. The project consists of seven existing buildings, and three new structures: Podium, a space for temporary exhibitions; Cinema, a multimedia auditorium; and Torre, a nine-story permanent exhibition space for displaying the foundation's collection and activities. Torre, currently undergoing construction work, will be open to the public at a later date.

Kienholz: Five Car Stud / Fondazione Prada, Milan
The exhibition Kienholz: Five Car Stud at Fondazione Prada in Milan, Italy, brings together a selection of artworks realized by Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, including the work that gives the show its title. In this video, we have a look at the exhibition, and curator Germano Celant provides us with an introduction to the show. The video also includes an interview with Nancy Reddin Kienholz, who talks about how she and Edward worked together, and the actuality of their work. This video is an excerpt, the complete video is available at
The installation Five Car Stud is a life-sized reproduction of a scene of racial violence. The work has earned a lot of attention and controversy and is considered one of the artist’s most significant works. Edward Kienholz created Five Car Stud from 1969 to 1972. It was first exhibited at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. After that it was hidden from view in the storage of a collector for almost forty years.
Five Car Stud was only presented once again to the viewing public in 2011 and 2012 following restoration, first at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and then at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. Today the artwork is part of the Prada Collection. It’s being shown for the first time ever in Italy, where it forms the central nucleus of an exhibition that presents 25 artworks including sculpture, assemblages and tableaux realized by the Kienholzes from 1959 to 1994. The exhibition also presents documentation material on the history and making of Five Car Stud. The show runs until December 31, 2016.

Places to see in ( Milan - Italy ) Fondazione Prada
Fondazione Prada, co-chaired by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli since 1995, is an institution dedicated to contemporary art and culture. From 1993 to 2010, the Fondazione has organised 24 solo shows at its exhibition spaces in Milan, conceived as dialogues with acclaimed contemporary artists. In 2015, the Fondazione Prada opened a new, permanent facility in Milan.
In the past 20 years, it has also promoted a rich cultural programme, such as film festivals (Tribeca Film Festival at Fondazione Prada”, 2004; “Italian Kings of the Bs. Secret History of Italian Cinema, 1949–1976”, 2004; “Secret History of Asian Cinema”, 2005; “Secret History of Russian Cinema”, 2007), multi-disciplinary and philosophy talks and architecture and design projects (“Herzog & de Meuron, OMA/AMO Rem Koolhaas. Projects for Prada. Works in Progress”, 2001; “Unveiling the Prada Foundation”, 2008; “Rotor: Ex Limbo”, 2011. In 2011, the Fondazione Prada opened a new exhibition space in Venice, the Ca’ Corner della Regina, a historic palazzo on the Grand Canal, which has hosted several collective exhibitions: “Fondazione Prada_Ca’ Corner”, 2011; “The Small Utopia. Ars multiplicata”, 2012, “When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013”, 2013 and Art or Sound, 2014.
On 9 May 2015, the Fondazione Prada unveiled its new permanent Milan venue, in Largo Isarco. The new Milan venue of the Fondazione, conceived by architecture firm OMA—led by Rem Koolhaas—expands the repertoire of spatial typologies in which art can be exhibited and shared with the public. The complex, which is the result of the transformation of a former distillery dating back to the 1910s, is articulated by an architectural configuration which combines preexisting buildings with three new structures, named “Podium”, “Cinema” and “Torre”. The hallmark of the new venue is the so-called “Haunted House”, a 4-story building, clad in 24 carat gold foil, where pieces from the permanent collection of art of the Fondazione Prada are permanently on display.

AN INTRODUCTION | Fondazione Prada Milano
The Sud gallery and part of the Deposito, the imposing warehouse located on the west limit of Fondazione Prada's Milan venue, host ‘An Introduction’ (9 May 2015 – 10 January 2016), an exhibition showcasing more than 70 works and emerged from a dialogue between Miuccia Prada and Germano Celant.
Intertwining research and a passion for art which has acquired both a private a public status, the curiosity, impulses and aspirations which have contributed to the creation of the collection and led to the opening of a foundation are explored. The exhibition starts in the 1970’s artistic realm, from New Dada to Minimal art, with works by Walter De Maria, Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Donald Judd and Barnett Newman.
It testifies a love for socially engaged, critical art with works by Pino Pascali and Edward Kienholz. It proceeds with a studiolo dating back to the end of the 15th century, as a symbol of the continuity of knowledge through history.
A quadreria including works by various artists, from William N. Copley to Lucio Fontana, from Mario Schifano to Jeff Koons, from Gerhard Richter to Goshka Macuga, documents the transformation of personal notions and passions into a collection animated by a multiplicity of artistic and cultural interests which encompass contemporary times.
The exhibition ends with a series of ‘artists’ cars’, realized by Elmgreen & Dragset, Carsten Höller & Rosemarie Trockel, Tobias Rehberger and Sarah Lucas among others, an immersion into a dimension where life is intertwined with the artists’ personal and artistic contributions, toward a more extended horizon represented by the activities of the Fondazione.
