Themed ‘Mai Main: Traditional Sports and Games’ (Mai Main meaning Let’s Play!), George Town took a stroll down memory lane in George Town Heritage Celebrations 2016, returning the streets to its olden days as celebrations-goers played traditional sports and games such as ‘batu tujuh’, ‘kali toi’ and hopscotch.
Held from 7 - 9 July 2016, the Celebrations marked the eighth anniversary of George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sparking childhood memories among adults and exposing the younger generations to the excitement of their parents’ era. Eleven traditional sports and 23 traditional games were highlighted in the Celebrations through introductory classes, forums, a street festival, workshops, demonstrations, and open court games.
Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day
After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on:
Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!
To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.
We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.
In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.
To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.
Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Hope you enjoyed it, and hope it will give you some ideas for what to do when you visit. More Penang street food videos coming soon!

Live and Invest in George Town, Malaysia
George Town’s population is just 740,000–small enough so that it’s easy to make friends and meet people, yet large enough to have health care that meets international standards and easy availability to all the other goods and services you might need. Year-round sunny, warm weather, First World infrastructure, easy permanent residency, and English-speaking locals make the living here easy.
The island of Penang, and its capital city of George Town, is a paradise for food lovers. This year, Lonely Planet announced that Penang has been voted the top food destination in the world.
ECA International rated George Town as being the most livable city in Malaysia. We agree (and so do our taste buds!). In our opinion, Penang is one of the top spots in all of Southeast Asia for long-term living and retirement.
We make it a point to visit George Town whenever we're in the vicinity. We enjoy wandering around this UNESCO World Heritage city and, of course, the food is nothing short of fantastic. For so many reasons, George Town is a place worth returning to again and again.

George Town Heritage Celebrations 2018 Potential
With 2018 marking the 10th year of George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the theme ‘POTENTIAL - Of the Past, In the Present, For the Future explores George Town’s potential in moving forward based on its past narratives and current experiences. POTENTIAL also contains the word ‘ten’, representing the 10th anniversary of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Held on 7 July 2018, the Street Festival featured 25 community workshops comprising four sections - Auspicious Celebrations (celebrations and ritual), Handmade Crafts, Daily Delights (cultural food) and Leisure Activities (games and entertainment), as well as traditional performances which invited the participation of celebration-goers. Site excursions to eight places of worship were also organised on the weekends of July 2018.
George Town (Penang) - UNESCO World Heritage Site
In 2008, George Town was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing. This maritime-trading city was developed during the colonial era and are older than most cities in Malaysia. As a result, it has retained a unique cityscape and multicultural heritage.
George Town represents exceptional examples of multi-cultural trading towns in East and Southeast Asia. It is a living testimony to the multi-cultural heritage and tradition of Asia, and European colonial influences. A mixture of unique architecture, culture and townscape was also created without parallel anywhere in East and South Asia.

Penang George Town, Best Place To Retire
U.S. website ranks George Town in top 10 best places to retire this year.
Penang’s state capital city George Town has been listed as one of the best places to retire abroad in 2016 by CNN Money.
One of Malaysia’s two urban Unesco world heritage sites ranked sixth in the US list, beating even Chiang Mai in Thailand and ahead of Las Terrenas in the Dominican Republic, Cuenca in Ecuador, and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the latest listing proved that Penang is heading towards an international city status that is clean, green and sustainable.
“We are proud of being one of the only two Asian cities in the list,” he said and congratulated Penangites for making George Town a liveable city for all.
He also told senior citizens living in the state that they have chosen the right place to retire.
In the CNN Money report dated January 6, writer Katie Lobosco named George Town as an “extremely affordable” location to retire in with a monthly budget of US$900 equals to Ringgit Malaysia 3,750.
Georgetown is the capital of the island and state of Penang, on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia. It was listed by UNESCO in 2008 as a 'World Heritage Site', together with fellow former Straits Settlement, Malacca.
Founded in 1786 by British trader Francis Light, Georgetown was one of the three Straits Settlements along with Singapore and Malacca. Modern-day Georgetown is one of Malaysia's largest cities with 600,000 inhabitants.
Today, the city is known for its well-preserved colonial core, with original shophouses dating from the 19th century to the 1930s still surviving, together with their trades of old. Colonial buildings and places of worship coexist with these shophouses. Street markets and hawkers continue to be a part of daily life, and the atmosphere is often likened to that of Singapore back in the 1960s and 1970s.
