Kuan Yin Teng Chinese Taoist Temple located in George Town - Penang, Malaysia Travel Video
As we randomly wandered around historic George Town we spotted Kuan Yin Teng Taoist Temple and decided to check it out in this travel video from Penang, Malaysia. Known as the Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, it is the oldest (although not the most ornate) temple in all of George Town. Given its historical significance in the city, it is still regarded as the most significant Taoist temple situated along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling street.
Kuan Yin Teng, or Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, is one of the most important temples in Penang. It is officially known as the Kong Hock Keong or Temple of the Hokkien and Cantonese Communities, but that name is largely unpopular among the locals, who know it simply as Kuan Yin Teng.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the temple has to do with its location based principally on feng shui. Kuan Yin Teng, situated on a gentle knoll, is considered the optimal placement for the dragon. With views of both the sea and hills, the temple also has several wells regarded as the 'eye of the dragon.'
Over the years, Kuan Yin Teng temple has undergone numerous renovations, upgrades and repairs; however, it still is the most significant Taoist temple for the Chinese population living on Penang island.
The temple was built by the initial Cantonese and Hokkien settlers in the early 19th century. One can typically witness plenty of worshippers praying and/or burning money made out of paper. When we visited it was atypically quiet though given all of the renovations. In fact, certain areas of the temple were strictly off limits to the general public. To work around this we placed or cameras in between the bars and barriers to still capture some footage or photos of certain aspects of the temple from a distance.
One of the most quirky encounters we had was with a man who decided to dance like a chicken and yell aloud, I'm flying! At first I didn't capture him on camera; however, the second time I walked past him he did his 'chicken dance' once again for me and I was sure to have the camera rolling this time around. I may forget certain details about the temple over time; however, I'll likely forget what this man did.
One thing that struck me about this temple is just how tiny it is. I suppose I'm used to visiting massive temples and expecting to have my mind blown away; however, in relative comparison, this one was quite humble. Although I would put visiting the Clan Jetties or Little India ahead of the experience of wandering around this historic temple, we both still enjoyed checking it out.
For those interested in visiting the temple, it is located on former Lebuh Pitt (now Jin Masjid Kapitan Keling) nearby Little India. If you're staying nearby Chulia street or the Komplex Komptar, it's easy enough to reach on foot:

Goddess of Mercy Temple Penang, Kuan Yin Teng 观音亭
The Goddess of Mercy Temple, also known colloquially as Kuan Yin Teng or Kong Hock Keong, is a Taoist temple in the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Situated at Pitt Street, it was first built in 1728, making it Penang's oldest Taoist temple.
Today, the Goddess of Mercy Temple is dedicated to the Taoist Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin. However, the temple had been originally established for the worship of Mazu, a sea deity. Following an influx of ethnic Chinese into George Town after the founding of the settlement in 1786, the temple transitioned into one dedicated to Guanyin in 1824; by then, it also began to function as a neutral mediator between the rival Cantonese and Hokkien communities.
While the temple's more secular functions have since been passed on to the Penang Chinese Town Hall, it retains its religious significance and remains popular amongst Penangites of Chinese descent. It becomes a focal point for Chinese festivities such as the annual feast days for Guanyin and the Jade Emperor's Birthday, attracting devotees from across Southeast Asia.

Kuan Yin Teng - Temple of the Goddess of Mercy (观音亭)
Kuan Yin Teng, literally, Pavilion of the Goddess of Mercy, but more commonly known as Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, is one of the most important temples in Penang. This is the colloquial name for the temple, which also comes with the more illustrious official name, Kong Hock Keong which means Palace of the Cantonese and the Hokkiens. But as far as most people in Penang are concerned, it is Kuan Yin Teng.
Kuan Yin Teng is located along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, formerly Pitt Street. Although far from being the biggest or most ornate temple in George Town, it is the oldest. And that makes it the mother temple for the Taoists in the city. If you study the history of the Goddess of Mercy Temple, you would be surprised to learn that at the time it was built, it was not dedicated to Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, but rather to Mah Cor (妈祖), the patron saint of seafarers.
Apparently, and understandably, the Mah Cor, as a goddess dedicated to rescuing seafarers from the perils at sea, was the original primary diety of the temple because the Chinese community, being newcomers in a strange land, needed divine protection for their tumultous journey through the South China Sea. A study of the altar tablets shows that the tablet representting the Mah Cor is larger than the one for the Kuan Yin. Also, according to historian Ong Seng Huat, the poems inscribed on the 60 fortune sticks in the temple are similar to those found in Mah Cor temples.
In all likelihood, as the local Chinese community evolved from one dependent on the sea to one which is urban, the virtues of the Goddess of Mercy - motherliness, compassionate, dedicated to saving mortals from tribulation - became more congruent to their needs. This transition from Ma Cor to Kuan Yin 1824, because two stelae erected by the Board of Directors of the temple indicated that the Goddess of Mercy was the main deity even before 1824.

Kwan Yin Teng (Goddess of Mercy Temple).m2ts
The oldest Chinese temple on Penang, the Goddess of Mercy was founded in 1801 after Chinese settlers received the plot of land it stands on from the British. The street directly opposite is named Lebuh China - an effort by the British to make clear as to who stayed where. Worshippers here congregate to burn incense and pour oil over sacred objects. The building is decorated with intricately crafted dragons and a pair of stone sculptured lions which are said to be its guardians. Undoubtedly the most popular Chinese temple in Penang, it is flocked to by pilgrims and followers all year round, particularly on the first and fifteenth day of each lunar month

The Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam, Penang, Malaysia, facing the sea, and is one of the best known temples on the island.
