Gran Teatro Cervantes de Tánger en la exposición del Instituto Cervantes
2014. El Instituto Cervantes organiza una exposición en el Gran Teatro Cervantes de Tánger (Marruecos), el mayor y más importante coliseo del norte de África, cuando estaban a punto de cumplirse 101 años de su inauguración y llevaba casi 40 cerrado. Se recuerda la historia del Teatro Cervantes de Tánger, sus noches de gloria y el olvido y su ruina.
Fue el sueño de una pareja de emigrantes andaluces: Manuel Peña, de Rota, y su esposa, Esperanza Orellana, de Sevilla. Inaugurado en diciembre de 1913, por su escenario pasaron los más grandes: el tenor Enrico Carusso, la actriz Margarita Xirgu y todas las estrellas de la canción. Su historia está ligada, sobre todo, a la de la colonia española en esta ciudad internacional. Hasta 30.000 españoles llegaron a vivir en Tánger, principalmente gaditanos y malagueños. El fin del Protectorado y la Marcha Verde marcaron el declive español y con él, el del Teatro Cervantes.
Seis millones de euros es el presupuesto para su rehabilitación según el estado español, su actual propietario. Un proyecto paralizado por la crisis y que no garantiza su mantenimiento posterior. Las autoridades marroquíes han mostrado interés por alcanzar un acuerdo pero de momento no hay nada concreto, sólo la esperanza de que se recupere antes de su ruina total.

La sede central de la institución se encuentra en Madrid y en Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), ciudad de nacimiento del escritor Miguel de Cervantes.
El Instituto Cervantes está presente en cuatro continentes. La institución organizar los exámenes para el Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) y otros cursos de español.

Tánger busca el renacer del teatro Cervantes
Cien años después de su construcción, el teatro Cervantes de Tánger, en el norte de Marruecos, una obra maestra de la arquitectura española del siglo XX, está prácticamente en ruinas. Pero un grupo de personas está intentando rescatarlo del olvido.

Ahora se está cayendo.
Queremos reanimarlo, que vuelva a ser un espacio útil para la cultura.

ENDERBY ODYSSEY
Extract from Anthony Burgess’s Enderby Outside (1968):
Enderby climbed to the top of the low wall by means of an empty Coca-Cola crate and a couple of broken-brick toeholds. He dropped easily, though panting, over the other side. It was an alley he was in now, and this led to a street. The street went downhill and led to other streets. If you kept going down all the time you eventually came to the Avenue d'Espagne, which looked at the plage. That dog place was down there, not far from the Hotel Rif.
It was very steep. Enderby teetered past a crumbling theatre called the Miguel de Cervantes then, finding that the next turning seemed to take him some way uphill again, tried a dark and leafy passage which went unequivocally down. Here a little Moorish girl cried when she saw him, and a number of house-dogs started to bark. But he went gamely on, supporting himself by grasping at broken fences. Precipitous: that was the word. At last he emerged from the barking dark, finding himself on a street where a knot of Moorish boys in smart suits called to him:
‘You want boy, Charlie?’
‘You very hot want nice beer.’
‘For cough,’ said Enderby, in no mood for foreign nonsense, and a boy riposted with:
‘You fuck off too, English fuckpig.’
Enderby didn't like that. He knew that this place had once belonged to the English, part of Charles II's Portuguese queen's dowry. It was not right that he should be addressed like that. But another boy cried:
‘You fucking German. Kaput heilhitler.’
And another:
‘Fucking Yankee motherfucker. You stick chewing-gum up fucking arse.’
That showed a certain ingenuity of invective. They were very rude boys, but their apparently indifferent despication of foreigners was perhaps a healthy sign, stirring in sympathy a limp G-string in his own nature. He nodded at them and, more kindly, said once more:
‘For cough.’
They seemed to recognise his change of tone, for they merely pronged two fingers each in his direction, one or two of them emitting a lip-fart. Then they started to playfight, yelping, among themselves. Enderby continued his descent, coming soon to a hotel-and-bar on his left called Al-Djenina. The forecourt had bird cages in it, the birds all tucked up for the night, and Enderby could distinctly see, through the long bar-window, middle-aged men drunk and embracing each other. Those would, he thought, be expatriate writers. He was, of course, one of those himself now, but he was indifferent to the duties and pleasures of sodality. He was on his own, waiting. He had written, though. He was working on things. The wind from the sea upheld him as he tottered to level ground. Here it was then: the Avenue d'Espagne, as they called it.

Tangier Travel Guide - Morocco Amazing Atmosphere
Tangier (طنجة) is an important port city in Morocco. Tangier is a fascinating Moroccan city to visit. It has many of the things that travelers love--a sense of exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, and unspoiled beaches. It's easy enough to navigate if you're used to Western cities, while being clearly different from those Western cities.
An uncontrolled mix of north Africa, Spain, Portugal and France, Tangier is located in northern Morocco, and was under joint international control until 1956. The city is separated from Spain by the 20 miles of the Strait of Gibraltar. Frequent ferries make the short crossing from Europe each day, and many cruise ships sailing between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic often include Tangier as a port of call.
Walking is perhaps the best way to see the relatively compact Tangier. Petit taxis are common. Tangier is very easy to navigate around; the two main roads are Boulevard Mohamed V which runs from near the Medina through the ville nouvelle and Boulevard Mohamed VI (formerly Ave des FAR) which runs along from the beachfront from the port to Malabata. The Medina area is a complex array of alleyways some of which can only be accessed on foot. Mohamed V has a whole range of clothes shops, pharmacies and cafes as well as Hotel Flandria, Hotel Rembrandt. Hotel Minzah lies just off this road. Mohamed VI runs along the beach front where you will find numerous hotels (Rif, Ramada, Sherezade, Solazure, Tariq, Movenpick,Hilton), bars, discos, restaurants and cafes. Most hostels are situated on the roads heading uphill near the port area.
Most locals in Tangier will be unfamiliar with what we call the ville nouvelle. To help with agreeing fares and generally with navigating using taxis - the central main thoroughfare is simply known as the Boulevard, the beach area as Playa, the port as Marsa, the medina as souk barra, the hilly area to the west of Tangier with the Golf Course and Race Track as California, the residential area heading towards the main road to Tetouan as Idrissia, the thieves market as Casa Barata.
There are many choices of different cuisine available. Many of the luxury hotels offer a good selection of both Moroccan and Continental Fare, though at prices much higher than what you will find elsewhere. There are also many restaurants along the Ave Mohamed VI (the beachfront) where one can enjoy a nice meal with a glass of wine on the beachfront.
Tangier is Morocco's second most important industrial centre after Casablanca. The industrial sectors are diversified: textile, chemical, mechanical, metallurgical and naval. Currently, the city has four industrial parks of which two have the status of free economic zone. Tangier's economy relies heavily on tourism. Seaside resorts have been increasing with projects funded by foreign investments. Real estate and construction companies have been investing heavily in tourist infrastructures.
The old town is still surrounded by the remains of what was once more than 1,829 metres of stone rampart. Most of it dates to the town's Portuguese occupation, with restoration work later undertaken at different times. Three major bastions were the Irish Tower (Bordj al-Naʿam), York Castle (Bordj dar al-Barud), and the Bordj al-Salam.
