Sourdough Trail - cross country skiing near Ward, Colorado
Great snow conditions on the Sourdough Trail. Cross Country Skiing west of the Peak to Peak Highway near Ward Colorado. This section is a few miles south of Rocky Mountain National Park and is worth the ride. It is best to do this trail from north to south, spotting a car at each trail head. I'm looking forward to doing it also in the warmer months on my bike !!

Inside the Berthoud Pass Warming Hut, Colorado - 3,446 metres (11,307 feet)
Berthoud Pass is located on U.S. Highway 40 about 70 kilometres (43 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The pass provides a high route between upper Clear Creek Canyon to the upper valley of the Fraser River in Middle Park to the north. Berthoud Pass traverses the continental divide at the Front Range, on the border between Clear Creek County and Grand County.
The pass is named for Edward L. Berthoud, the chief surveyor of the Colorado Central Railroad during the 1870s. Accompanied by Jim Bridger, Berthoud discovered the pass in July 1861 while surveying a possible route for the railroad.
Berthoud determined that the pass was only suitable as a wagon road, but not for the railroad due to its steep grade (6.3% on either side), along with winding switchbacks and many tight spots.
From Denver and the Front Range Berthoud Pass provides the fastest road access to Winter Park and a secondary route to Steamboat Springs. However, Berthoud Pass is considered one of the more difficult passes in Colorado and is often closed due to weather, snow accumulations, and accidents.
At one time this location was home to the now defunct Berthoud Pass Ski Area. Now, however, the warming hut/restrooms (seen in this video) are provided for the convenience of backcountry skiers, snowboarders, and snowshoers that are attracted to the area's abundance of steep and challenging terrain and plentiful snow.
The twisting road on both sides of the pass also makes hitchhiking car shuttles possible, eliminating the need for skiers and snowboarders to hike back to the top of the pass after each run.
The ski resort was closed in 2002 due to financial problems caused by lack of water and sewage at the top of the pass. In 2003 the lifts were taken down, while some people continued to ski using snowcats for lift transportation. In 2005 the Colorado DOT began using a fund to restore the area to its natural state. First on the list was the demolition of the historic lodge.
The warming hut you see in my video was opened at the top of the pass in May 2008, along with an expanded parking area, two sceneic viewing areas and a new summit marker sign. The ski lodge and facilities had been in use since the early 1950s and the new warming hut includes modern features such as composting toilets, radiant floor heating, the video screen you see in the video, and green construction.
Berthoud Ski resort is claimed by some to have been the first resort and lift in Colorado. Some say it was the first resort to openly welcome snowboarders.

Winter in the Grand Haven Area
Think of all the s sports that go along with snow, and the Grand Haven Area has got 'em. Skiing - downhill or cross-country - skating, snowshoeing and sledding, just to name a few. Area parks are full of groomed and ungroomed trails to explore. Ice fishing is prime. Park restrooms are open. Warming houses and concessions are bustling. Cozy inns have roaring fireplaces perfect for a blanket and afternoon snooze. And let's not forget shopping - considered a competitive sport by many. Downtown Grand Haven won't disappoint, no matter the winter conditions. Even the sidewalks and streets have a special snowmelt system installed to keep you safe and surefooted as you shop. Grand Haven Winterfest takes place at the end of January and is a family and local favorite.
