Boats in the Niagara River
The Niagara River is a river that flows north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It forms part of the border between the province of Ontario in Canada (on the west) and the state of New York in the United States (on the east). There are differing theories as to the origin of the river's name. According to Iroquoian scholar Bruce Trigger, Niagara is derived from the name given to a branch of the locally residing native Neutral Confederacy, who are described as being called the Niagagarega people on several late-17th-century French maps of the area.[3] According to George R. Stewart, it comes from the name of an Iroquois town called Ongniaahra, meaning point of land cut in two.
The river, which is occasionally described as a strait, is about 58 kilometres (36 mi) long and includes Niagara Falls in its course. The falls have moved approximately 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) upstream from the Niagara Escarpment in the last 12,000 years, resulting in a gorge below the falls. Today, the diversion of the river for electrical generation has significantly reduced the rate of erosion.
Power plants on the river include the Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Power Stations on the Canadian side, and the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant (built in 1961) on the American side. Together, they generate 4.4 gigawatts of electricity. The International Control Works, built in 1954, regulates the river flow. Ships on the Great Lakes use the Welland Canal, part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, on the Canadian side of the river, to bypass Niagara Falls.
The total drop in elevation along the river is 99 metres (325 ft). The Niagara Gorge extends downstream from the Falls and includes the Niagara Whirlpool and another section of rapids.
The Niagara River also features two large islands and numerous smaller islands. Grand Island and Navy Island, the two largest islands, are on the American and Canadian sides of the river, respectively. Goat Island and the tiny Luna Island split Niagara Falls into its three sections, the Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and American Falls. Unity Island lies further upstream, alongside the city of Buffalo.
The Niagara River and its tributaries, Tonawanda Creek and the Welland River, formed part of the last section of the Erie Canal and Welland Canal. After leaving Lockport, New York, the Erie Canal proceeds southwest until it enters Tonawanda Creek. After entering the Niagara River, watercraft then proceed southward to the final lock, where a short section of the canal allows boats to avoid the turbulent shoal water at the river intake and enter Lake Erie.
The Welland Canals used the Welland River as a connection to the Niagara River south of the falls, allowing water traffic to safely re-enter the Niagara River and proceed to Lake Erie.
Canada Border Crossing from USA on foot
Crossing the border from USA into Canada on foot across Rainbow Bridge.
To get to Canada from the USA, cross Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, New York USA into Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. To leave the United States of America, walk through a self locking metal turnstile gate without needing to show any id at this point, half way across the Rainbow Bridge there is a bronze plaque on the bridge fence indicating the United States / Canada International Boundary Line, this area is also notated with the Canadian flag flying next to the USA flag. To enter Canada after crossing the International Boundary Line you must show your passport to customs agents before entering the country of Canada, there is no fee for this process but when you want to cross the same bridge back into the USA there is a .50 cent fee.
Walking across Rainbow Bridge takes under10 minutes, the time to show your passport to the agent at the Canadian border and the agents at the USA when returning to The United States of America cannot be determined as the time varies based on how many border agents or people trying to enter the country at any given time.
There are excellent views of Niagara Falls from both the USA and Canada, but they are both very different, the view of the falls from Canada shows a more natural less built up look, where as the view of Niagara Falls from the USA shows more of a city built up look.

America's Greatest Landmarks - USA Travel Attractions
Take a tour of America's Greatest Landmarks -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
I'd like to show you America's Greatest Landmarks
The National Mall is known as the hub of historic activities in Washington DC. Lavishly spread across acres of green grass, this open area national park has been often used for public demonstrations, marches, rallies and concerts. The area of the park extends from the illustrious capital building to the proud Lincoln Memorial.
One of the most iconic bridges in the world, The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco to the tip of Marin County. This suspension bridge, completed in 1937, is also famous for its so called International Orange color produced by the sealant used. A dazzling approximate 118 thousand cars pass through this mighty structure every day, a testament to its impressive engineering.
Shining brilliantly on New York Harbor's Liberty Island, is the Statue of Liberty. A rather generous gift from the French nation, the statue consists of a representation of the Roman Goddess of freedom clasping a torch. Arguably the most popular internationally recognizable symbol of America, it also stands as an effigy of freedom.
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is an enduring symbol of freedom and hope which graces the lands of South Dakota. Four former presidents have been elegantly carved 60 feet high into Mount Rushmore. A national treasure, the monument pays homage to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
This resplendent brick Georgian building in Philadelphia is Independence Hall. This majestic monument has witnessed many historic events in the history of United States. The signing of The Declaration of Independence and the adoption of the United States Constitution took place in this glorious structure.
Places - U.S. - Seven Natural Wonders of the United States
I'm Steve Ember. And I'm Barbara Klein with EXPLORATIONS in VOA Special English.
We received a special request in a letter from a listener in Nagano, Japan. Atsumi Shimoda asked for a report about what the Special English writers thought were the seven natural wonders of the United States. So now we will visit these natural wonders. Some are huge. Some are powerful. And some are even a little frightening! But, we will keep a safe distance. The first stop is a natural wonder that the United States shares with Canada. That thundering crash is the tens of thousands of cubic feet of water that flow each second over Niagara Falls which includes the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. The American Falls in New York State extends more than 320 meters across part of the Niagara River. The American Falls is more than 50 meters high.
Now we travel southeast to the state of Florida. We will visit the area once called the liquid heart of that state -- the Everglades.Hundreds of birds fly in a sunny blue sky. The only sounds are bird calls and the soft noise made by tall grasses as the water slowly moves them. Hidden in the grasses, dark green alligators move at the edge of the water, like part of the Earth come alive.
This is the Everglades -- a low, watery, partly coastal area that covers 10,000 square kilometers. The area is filled with sawgrass. This plant grows in sharp, thin pieces that are three to ten meters tall. The Everglades is sometimes called river of grass.
But as we travel west, the cropland gives way to wild grasses. A strong dry wind blows continuously from the west.
Suddenly, the land becomes torn and rocky, dry and dusty -- no longer green and gold. It is now a light red-brown color. All around are broken disordered forms. There are hills and valleys of all sizes and strange shapes.
These are the Badlands. Hundreds of thousands of years ago the area was grassland. But, then, forces of nature destroyed the grass. Water and ice cut into the surface of the Earth. They beat at the rocks, wearing them away. The result is one of the world's strangest sights.
All together, the Badlands cover more than 15,000 square kilometers. About ten percent is national parkland. The area is a study in extremes. Temperatures in the summer have been as high as 46 degrees Celsius. In the winter they have dropped to as low as 41 degrees below zero. Life in the Badlands is difficult.
. We want to see the huge hole in the Earth, called the Grand Canyon in the state of Arizona. The first sight is breathtaking. The Grand Canyon stretches for hundreds of kilometers before us and hundreds of meters below us. It is about 24 kilometers across at its widest point. Its deepest point is almost 2,000 meters down.
The Grand Canyon is a series of deep long cuts in rock.
Now, we are at the hottest, driest and lowest place in North America. Death Valley is part of the Mojave Desert. It lies mostly in the western state of California although part of it reaches into Nevada.
An area called Badwater sits about 86 meters below sea level. There is not really any water there. The area gets fewer than five centimeters of rain a year.
During the summer the temperature in Death Valley can reach 57 degrees Celsius. But, it can be dangerously cold in the winter there, too. And storms in the mountains can produce sudden flooding on the valley floor.
In other words, Death Valley is an unforgiving place.
We could probably just call all of Alaska a natural wonder. But of special interest are its glaciers. These huge, slow-moving masses of ice cover about 75,000 square kilometers.
About 100,000 of these rivers of ice flow down mountains. Some start from thousands of meters up a mountain. They can flow to areas just a few hundred meters above sea level. The largest Alaskan glacier is called Malaspina. It is more than 2,200 square kilometers.
Welcome to Mount Kilauea, the world's most active volcano. It is on the island of Hawaii. Kilauea is not far from Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world.
Kilauea has been releasing burning hot liquid rock called lava continuously since 1983. The lava flows down the mountain to the Pacific Ocean. Its fierce heat produces a big cloud of steam when it hits the cold water. Kilauean lava continues to add land to the island.

Grass Lake, Michigan, Usa
Grass Lake is a village in Jackson County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,082 at the 2000 census.
Grass Lake was first settled in 1829 by David Sterling, whose family moved here from Niagara County, New York.
In 1842, the coming of the railroad helped make Grass Lake a permanent community when they built a station here: it stands, well-preserved, along the still active rail line to the east of town.
UFO on Baseline Rd. Grand Island New York 11/15/12
I really don't know what these lights would be from cuz the 1 pair of lights becomes three. As we drove past, my girlfriend turned around to see them, and said there were 4 lights in the back of the one. Before we recorded, it looked as if they were helicopters, although they were heading towards each other and looked as if they were going to hit each other. They then hovered above Baseline Road and near this little extension road that takes you too Fucillo car dealership. I would say these were helicopters, however when i opened my window, i couldnt hear any noise from the choppers. I have heard helicopters going over houses, and you can hear them. This is quite wierd and i definitely can't identify them, so i think they are UFO's

Mom Warns Other About Dangers of Swimming In Quarries After Son Died
More from Inside Edition:
Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries.
