Note: Once anchored near Crystal River, a tour guide can shuttle you inland to Rainbow River. There are kayak rentals, or you can bring your own if you have access to a vehicle. It's worth renting a car to see the nearby historic towns, experience the many wildlife preserves, and generally explore.

In the winter months, manatees flock to Crystal river and you're allowed to swim near them (there are rules of course against hassling them). We explored this area in early summer, when most of the manatees have left for the season. There are no manatees in Rainbow River. Some tour guides here operate year-round and are happy to show you the area's natural wonders.

Our five-day educational trip includes opportunities to observe and snorkel with manatees, as well as to explore the ecology of the springs, rivers, wetlands, and forests of this beautiful region.

Big Day 2019 - The Gulf Coast

On May 4, 2019 -- Global Big Day -- the Cornell Lab's Team Sapsucker will travel to the Gulf Coast to spot as many bird species as they can in 24 hours to raise funds for bird conservation.
For more than 30 years, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology has organized an annual Big Day event, sending a team of expert birders to different locations around the world as part of its biggest conservation science fundraiser. This year, Team Sapsucker will split into three groups to cover three counties along the US Gulf Coast: Galveston County in Texas, Mobile County in Alabama, and Franklin County in Florida. Their goal: to find 225 bird species and raise $575,000 for conservation and research!
After the event, we'll share the results with you so you can fulfill your pledged amount.

Somewhere in Kalamazoo - 03 - Snorkeling With Manatee
Today, we're a thousand miles from Kalamazoo on the Western coast of Florida, snorkeling with Manatee on the Crystal River. This was a day trip on our March 2014 Scuba diving adventure.
This trip was a welcomed diversion after our NAUI open water training sponsored by Sub Aquatic Sports and Services in Battle Creek, and was serviced by American Pro Dive Center in Crystal River Florida.
Manatee are an underwater mammal that have earned a special place in the hearts of underwater sporting enthusiasts and conservation-minded eco-folks around the world. The Florida Manatee is at a distinct disadvantage as commercial and private shipping lanes wreak havoc on their natural habitat. Being largely sedentary, and not capable of swift maneuvering underwater, the Manatee find it very difficult to escape the whirring propellers on boats - often finding themselves severely damaged after an unfortunate encounter.
Special habitats like the Crystal River have been set aside for the manatee, which also allows these types of trips to occur. Manatee generally occupy waters above 68' Farenheight, favoring the warm coastal and inland waters of The Gulf of Mexico, The Caribbean, and northern South America. These gentle sea cows have become severely endangered, and it's up to us as a global community to take care of our sea-grass munching friends.

There are over 1,000 freshwater springs in Florida, more than any other region in the world. Native Americans worshiped them as sacred, while many visitors today regard them as enchanted. Not only do these springs fuel rivers and nurture a wonderland of plants and wildlife, they flow from an Aquifer that provides drinking water for 90 percent of Floridians. Their value for recreation, real estate, and potable water is measured in billions of dollars. Florida would suffer an enormous aesthetic---and economic---loss if its springs were degraded.
Equinox Documentaries will explore the mysteries of these springs with rare footage---revealing labyrinthic limestone chambers, rare and endemic animals, and prehistoric fossils of mastodons and other Ice Age animals. But it will also bring to light more treacherous secrets that show how the flow of major springs has been steadily declining over the last 50 years, and why the once-pure waters often are clogged with nitrates. The most closely held secret is that humans may have done more damage to our magical springs in the last half century than others have done in the last ten thousand years.

Kayaking - Steinhatchee River (TDC Video)
The Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition team hosted guests on a kayak trip down the Steinhatchee River from the falls on 1/29/15. Suwannee Guides & Outfitters and Good Times Motel and Marina both assisted guests with breakfast, transportation and gear needs. Jeff Cary accompanied the group and filmed the event.

Churchhouse Hammock Boardwalk and Path to the Past Trails. The Boardwalk Trail is 1/3 mile in length and is fully ADA accessible. It begins in an old Pinewoods that is slowly becoming a Mesic Hammock. Habitat restoration is underway to encourage the return of species such as the Longleaf Pine, gopher tortoise, and fox squirrel. The Path to the Past Trail is 3/4 of a mile long, looping off the Boardwalk Trail and winding slowly out to a sawgrass marsh. Florida's *karst limestone topography can be seen at the surface, demonstrating the unique geology feature that typifies where springs find their beginnings. Our newest elevated boardwalk extension takes visitors through a sawgrass marsh and out to a hammock island. The entrance to the Churchhouse Hammock Boardwalk and Path to the Past Trails is located across the street from the Crystal River Mall on US Hwy. 19.

A place of exceptional natural beauty, the undisturbed islands, inlets, backwaters and forests of this Crystal River Preserve are especially cherished by nature lovers and photographers. The park borders 20 miles of the northern Gulf Coast between the two cities of Yankeetown and Homosassa. Visitors can hike or bicycle along seven miles of trails or study the native wildlife and plants on the two mile interpretive trail.

Crystal River Big Gag Grouper and Red Snapper Fishing on the 27' Ameracat!
Got a pretty late start because we knew it would be calmer in the afternoon. When we got out there we had to wait in 30ft till 2pm because it was so rough. Once we made it to 70ft it was on! Had a hard time getting past the red snapper though. Had to use bigger baits and bigger weights to get to the gags. We got 8-10 keepers for sure in the 3 hours of fishing and more Red Snapper than we could ever want to catch. Cant wait till they are open!
