The 11th Gwangju Biennale will kick off next week. Meanwhile, an international art fair started today prior to the biennale's official opening, turning the whole city into an cultural exhibition hall.

The Gwangju Biennale is now solidly among the world's five greatest biennales. Celebrating its 11th biennial festival, the Biennale's theme this year is The Eighth Climate. The festivity aims to bring together the earth's reality represented by the planet's seven climates and a future predicted by artists.

The exhibition hall will be filled with the artworks of 120 artists from 37 countries. This year's Biennale differs from the previous ones in that exhibitions will be held not only at the festival venue, but all over the city. Also, starting today, the Gwangju International Art Fair 2016 will be held at the Asia Culture Center, where a special exhibit will be featured for the duration of the 66-day Biennale. As foreign and local artists and galleries flock to Gwangju, the city is turning into one huge art exhibit.

The Trick Art Museum (트릭아트뮤지엄) in the tourist island of Jeju is a quirky museum dedicated to optical illusion.
Divided into several zones, the Trick Art Museum offers visitors the opportunity to capture photos of themselves integrating in the artwork and paintings.
For the less creative of us, there are useful photo guides at each exhibit to assist in working the best poses.

Facial expressions of dozens of workers are vividly described in the painting.
The five-meter-wide two-meter-tall painting has been created by seven artists.
This is a type of artwork that represents the so-called socialist painting.
A tiger looks like bursting out of the canvas. The author said it took seven hours for him to draw the eyes of the tiger, which look real.
North Korea presented the Gwangju Biennale with 22 paintings in four different genres, including a literati painting whose traditional drawing technique is known to have almost disappeared.

They (visitors to the Biennale) will have a chance to appreciate the really top-of-the-line paintings of North Korea, which claim to advocate for diversity, as well as socialism and realism.
More than 160 artists from 43 countries have taken part in the globally-recognized contemporary biennale hosted by South Korea's southwestern city of Gwangju with some 300 artworks.
Under the theme of Imagined Borders, the 2018 Gwangju Biennale is scheduled to run through November 11.

Upcoming art festival to turn Gwangju into heart of design arts
The Art capital of Korea, Gwangju is preparing to host a nearly two month long art festival starting from today, in conjunction with celebrating the 8th Gwangju Design Biennale. Various exhibitions will be held in the region featuring contemporary art made possible through collaborations between both the public and private participants.
From the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall to Asia Culture Center’s galleries and all points in between, patrons can enjoy comprehensive graphic design, Expansion of the Aesthetic, Practical, and Economic Values of Design
One must see event is “Lotus Dome,” by the Dutch artist and architect Daan Roosegaarde, an interactive artwork made up of hundreds of flowers, using foil devised by the artist. The sphere-shaped installation of flowers is designed to respond to the temperature of its visitors.
While the event has been held across Gwangju from September to October in every odd year, it is notable to see that the Gwangju Design Center has started launching the GDB since 2015, striving to promote business-centered design and to foster creativity of contemporary design culture.

Gwangju prepares for Typhoon ‘Lingling’
This year's 13th typhoon, Lingling, is likely to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the Korean Peninsula this weekend. It is forecast to affect the Korean peninsula from late tonight and to directly hit the wider metropolitan area on Saturday, according to the weather agency.
The weather agency warned of damage from strong winds in the southern and western regions of the country during the weekend. The typhoon is expected to be the one of the strongest typhoons to hit South Korea with maximum wind speeds of 145 to 180 kilometers per hour. That's strong enough to knock down trees.
Gwangju City held a meeting to monitor Typhoon Lingling's route and discuss measures to minimize damage. The city is operating its disaster control headquarters and has begun around-the-clock operation to prepare for the approaching typhoon.
It has also conducted emergency checkups around flood and accident-prone areas to minimize possible damage.
The typhoon is expected to leave South Korea and move to North Korea and China on Sunday.

With fall upon us, the art community has revved up its engines with a slew of exciting exhibitions and events.
Most notable is the Gwangju Biennale, which takes place here in Korea.
Our Yim Yoonhee has a look at this year′s edition, along with another top tier art exhibition. It′s a rather odd scene,... a jumble of horses, soldiers, flags,...
American artist Edward Kienholz was a foundational installation artist, and this is one of his lesser known works created with his wife Nancy.
It′s just one of the many meaningful and unique pieces to this year′s Gwangju Biennale.
Even though these works address political talk, spiritual talk, and social talk, they also satirize politics.
The 10th edition of one of Korea′s largest art gatherings has brought in some of the most abstract creations from all over the world.
The theme Burning Down the House incorporates the idea of burning and transformation,... and the process of finding hope amidst the ashes.
And though the artworks are united under a theme, each displays a flare of creativity and the extraordinary, as the Gwangju Biennale will remain open until next month, for people all over the country, and the world, to see what this year′s artists have in store.
Historical treasures from the Joseon Kingdoms serve as both artifacts, as well as works of art.
Traditional Korean art work includes anything from paintings, to the art of the beautiful moon jar, this one flawlessly created in the 18th century, displaying a perfectly rounded, almost seamless creation.
And here, one artist has recreated the Korean peninsula, and the millions of lives that together make up the country they call home. Another artist captures somber feelings of depression and tragedy on the canvas while other world renowned artists show illusion, and a sense of the contemporary,... through their use of various different mediums in this unique collection of both international and Korean artists.
But here, art isn′t just for the eyes.
One artist incorporates the audience, in a performance type creation,...
While other artists create an experience for the audience to walk through.
From Korean to foreign artists,... from the contemporary to the classic to the traditional,... art is a bridge through time and space.
