360-Degree Theater Lets You Experience VR Without A Headset
This theater takes VR to a whole new level. Space 360 is a spherical projection theater. It creates a small universe around viewers. This eliminates the need for VR headsets. The theater is located next to Lucerium National Science Museum in Gwangju, South Korea. Here's what you can see.
The 12-meter wide sphere can hold 45 people at a time. Visitors walk down a glass observation bridge. There are 12 projectors in the sphere that create the images. Each session is 15 minutes long. The content covers important milestones in history. Like the Big Bang. The origins of life. Human civilization. Followed by changes due to global warming.
The exhibit opened to the public in September 2017. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power donated the sphere theater to Space 360. Space 360's goal is to give visitors an immersive VR experience using the newest technology possible. It also sets an example for digital 360 theaters of the future.
Anyone over the age of 8 can visit Space 360. It costs 3,000 Korean Won or 2.82 American dollars to enter. The theater is a permanent installation and can be visited year-round.

Korea's National Science Museum attracts 1.5 mil. annual visitors
과학대중화 선봉...국립중앙과학관 관람객 3천만 돌파
April is Science Month here in Korea.
And the popularity of science is clear, with the total number of visitors to Korea's National Science Museum surpassing the 30 million mark.
Attracting more than one-point-five million visitors annually, the museum is helping raise the profile of science in the country.
Park Se-young has more.
Since relocating to Daejeon in 1990, the National Science Museum has received more than 30 million visitors.
The museum welcomes about one-and-a-half million visitors a year …and is said to have broken new ground in Korea's history of science exhibitions.
Visitors can learn about the history of science, …while taking part in a range of activities.
Aside from hands-on activities, I liked that there was a variety of displays with detailed descriptions.
The museum, open from Tuesday to Sunday and on holiday Mondays, offers free admission with the exception of some facilities.
It also provides a free English guide program once a day for foreign visitors upon reservation.
I believe we've grown to become a world-class museum. I think that we should bring about qualitative changes and provide a variety of in-depth activities in the future.
By working to increase the popularity of science, the museum hopes to serve as the central hub for hands-on exhibits and scientific research in the future.

Space 360 – Spherical Projection Theater
The Gwangju National Science Museum and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd chose Front Pictures to deliver a projection system to South Korea’s first spherical projection theater – Space 360.
The sphere – which is 12 meters in diameter – is located next to Lucerium National Science Museum in Gwangju. Construction started in September 2016 and finished in July 2017. The sphere opened for visitors in September 2017.
Space 360 can be considered a true VR theater of the future. When visitors step inside, they find themselves on a transparent, glass observation bridge, which crosses the sphere’s interior. A crisp 360 video projection around, above, and below the viewers fully immerses them as they stand and watch. They literally dive into a virtual world without having to use VR headsets.
The projection system runs on 12 WUXGA laser source Barco projectors powered by a single Screenberry™ media server that provides 27.6 MP video playback and auto-calibration.

LightAnimal exhibition in Korea 2017
We held LightAnimal exhibition in Gwangju National Science Museum this autumn.
A small hall filled by audience who wants to play with our whales. Science communicator told them information about whales as a quiz game. Excited children went up on stage to touch whales on a screen.
We think LightAnimal is very useful for education of science museum. It excites children very much. It motivates to visit museum and learn science.
LightAnimal is a digital animal exhibition system we are developing. It can show any animal anywhere without captivity. Moreover it can react to people in front of a screen. We believe it will be one of the best educational tool about animal.

TeamLab creates installation inspired by the movement of whirlpools
Japanese art collective TeamLab has unveiled an interactive digital installation at National Gallery of Victoria, which is inspired by the spiralling movement of whirlpools.
Titled Moving Creates Vorticles Create Movement, the work was launched as part of Melbourne's inaugural National Gallery of Victoria Triennial that showcases a range of contemporary art and design from over 100 artists.
The experiential work features a series of immersive and responsive lights that project moving lines that rotate on the floor.
Designed to appear like whirlpools of water, sensors in the lights are programmed to react to people's movement and pace.
