CAUGHT IN THE ACT burst onto the stage of the Hickory Community Theater on May 21 , 1981 after nine months of feverish work by its co-authors John Coffey and Tom McClary.
Feverish is the only word to accurately describe this concoction of song and dance that was no more than a single tune at the Kay Awards banquet in August of 1980. This song, “Caught in the Act,” was the first hint to the public that something unusual was brewing at HCT.
Actually, the brewing had begun well before then. In May of 1980, Charles Jeffers, the executive director of the HCT, had contacted Lenoir pianist/composer John Coffey concerning the possibility of writing a musical revue for local production. When Atlanta-based actor/writer Tom McClary added his talents to the project in November of 1980, the brew began to simmer. And, when eleven of the Piedmont’s finest local talents were tossed in, the brew boiled, reared back, exploded into the hottest show to hit the HCT boards in many a season.
Cooking metaphors aside, “Caught” was so well received that an unprecedented second run of the show was set for August/September of 1981. Such is the love of a good show by the people of Western North Carolina; and it’s because of that, once again we’re all caught in the act.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT was originally produced by the Hickory Community Theater, Hickory, N.C., the best-balanced city in the Tarheel State.
Production directed by Charles E. Jeffers.
Musical direction by John Coffey.
Choreographed by Jane Sigmon.
Set designed by Ray Mills.
Costumes designed by Norma V. Frank.

Catawba County Career Connections Open House March 19 2014
Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina opened its newest Career Connections Center at 837 W. Conover Boulevard on Wednesday, March 19. Goodwill is partnering with a number of organizations including Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) to offer a variety of services at the center. To celebrate the opening of the center and to provide members of the community an opportunity to learn about the services available, an open house was held at 10:00 AM.
Goodwill executives, CVCC representatives and elected officials will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the new center. Services offered at the new center are open to the community and include courses in Job Skills Training and Credentialing, Career Development and Career Readiness (CRC). Other programs include programs and networking for young professionals and recent college graduates, employment services for veterans and their families through the national Operation: GoodJobs initiative, and services for persons with disabilities that offer a different approach to learning new life skills and obtaining employment.
We have found that there is a definite need for our services here in Catawba County. This area has been hit particularly hard in the past several years but is on the path to recovery, said Goodwill Workforce Development Director Malla Vue. We want to support that recovery by helping people get the skills they need to be successful.
Goodwill's new Center also houses Project Re-entry, a program that provides transition services for former offenders after serving active prison sentences. Project Re-entry establishes a system of pre- and post-release services that begin with inmates up to eighteen months prior to release. Long-term services continue after the inmates are released. Goodwill partners with the Criminal Justice Department of the Piedmont Triad Regional Council and its partner prisons within the Department of Public Safety to offer employment and training services that help former offenders find jobs and become productive members of the community.
Our office looks forward to partnering with Goodwill's new center in Catawba County, said Catawba County District Attorney James C. Gaither, Jr. The programs that are being launched by Goodwill seek to address many of the issues that we deal with in our local courts, and we are supportive of the community effort that is being made to assist veterans and those who are struggling with unemployment. Over the past several months we have been working towards establishing a program to assist veterans who are struggling to overcome service related issues and have found themselves in our court system. The partnership with Goodwill is a tremendous step forward in that effort, and we are excited to be working with the Operation: GoodJobs program as we bring our 25th District Veteran's Program into place. We see these programs as instrumental in helping those who are willing to work to better themselves.
The Catawba County Career Connections Center is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to the Conover site, Goodwill operates Career Connections Centers in Buncombe, Davidson, Forsyth, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, and Wilkes Counties. For more information, call (828) 466-2346 or visit goodwillconnections.org.

Community Information: Burnsville, NC
Whoever said small-town life was a small life never lived in Burnsville, NC. The town offers living situations and outdoor experiences that go above and beyond the norm, presenting you with many opportunities to Live the Life You Choose.
BHTV: Supporting Local Arts with HandMade In America -
Live the Life You Choose Video: Rural Living in WNC -
“Burnsville is kind of a cool place to be,” says Jamie McMahan, Yancey County Planner. “Our outdoor recreation has always been some of the best you’ll find on the east coast. The local art is some of the best in the nation. Downtown here—you can walk through the square, do a ‘360,’ look around—it’s Norman Rockwell. I mean, you can’t beat it.”
“You’re close to Asheville if you want the hustle and bustle, and if you don’t want the hustle and bustle, you’re just 35 minutes away,” says McMahan. “It’s the reason we have a lot of folks who live here, [who] both enjoy Asheville and Boone, but they want to be where life is a little slower. You can get to know your neighbors, and that’s what I think about when I think of Yancey County and Burnsville.”
“We draw a lot of people who come to Burnsville who plan other outdoor recreation,” says McMahon. “So many hiking trails. Of course, we're home to Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Rockies. Actually, 10 of the tallest peaks east of the Rockies are in Yancey County. So, a lot of outdoor recreation, a lot of people who are looking for fishing, hunting, hiking. We're ideally located sort of centrally to all those sorts of things. Burnsville is sort of the place where you can come hang out, have a coffee, do some shopping, if you’re not sweating on the trails somewhere, trying to pull a trout out of a stream nearby.”
“The retail merchants that you’ll find on Main Street are 100% independent retailers,” says McMahon. “All do a very thriving business, making it a sort of a very pedestrian friendly, very walkable, very energetic place downtown.”
“Yancey County and Burnsville are sort of going through a renaissance,” says McMahon. “The arts community here is very thriving. We're home to more artists per capita than any other place in the nation. Everything from fine arts to arts and crafts, blown glass, pottery. The Parkway Playhouse is just off of downtown, which is the longest running community theatre in North Carolina.”
“But most recently, we’ve actually had sort of a tech surge,” says McMahon. “Yancey County is also the only county in North Carolina to have 100% connectivity by fiber to the home. So no matter wherever you live in our rocky terrain here in Yancey County, because we’re pretty mountainous, you can be served with up to a full gig of service by fiber connection.”
“It’s a very wide and diverse group of folks who come here,” says McMahon. “We have a lot of native-born folks who grew up here and realize it to be the best place in the world. We have a lot of people who come here as soon as they can, as I like to put it—so, as soon as they discover Burnsville and Yancey County. So, a lot of folks who come from, really, all over the country have settled here and make it, really, a vibrant community.”
“To watch Burnsville change, as it’s changed and evolved and grown as a small town—I think it’s the ideal small town,” says McMahon. “And if you like that kind of small town life, you want to take it a little slower, a little easier—you couldn’t find a better place to be.”
