Western North Carolina Trout Fishing (Wading) Overview Presentation
The Hunter Banks guide team discusses Western North Carolina trout fishing on many of the tailwater trout fisheries to include the Nantahala River trout fishing. Much of the guidance applies to other NC trout fishing destinations in western NC to include Cherokee trout fishing as well as trout fishing on small streams like the Cataloochee.
For a detailed discussion of the South Holston and Watauga fly fishing opportunities, here is the other half of the presentation:

Hiking on a Mountain Street Trail Asheville North Carolina(2)
Colorful leaves in the fall on a mountain Sea TrailThe Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a simple footpath stretching almost 1,200 miles across North Carolina from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks.

Each year, volunteers devote thousands of hours to planning and blazing the trail across the state step-by-step, milestone-by-milestone. You can help in creating this state treasure. Casting For Recovery
It's a way to heal from cancer that a group of women never dreamed possible, and now they're hooked. Casting for Recovery is a weekend retreat for women recovering from breast cancer. More than a dozen women attended this year's fall retreat at the Lake Logan Episcopal Center in Haywood County. The women learn how to fly fish in the West fork of the Pigeon River. Many of the women have never fished before the retreat, but many say the experience is therapeutic.
I'll take this weekend with me, says participant Kathy Ackerman. I've learned so much about how to go on with the rest of my life as a breast cancer survivor .
Casting for Recovery Carolinas hosts two retreats annually at the center in Haywood County. Organizers say participants don't have to enjoy fishing to attend the retreat. They add that a lot of important things happen off the water. If you or someone you know is interested the program, click here for more information.

Did Man Film a UFO Hovering Over North Carolina Lake?
A North Carolina man is convinced he caught a UFO on camera after he recorded a stationary object hovering in the sky on his cellphone. The shaky video has gone viral since being posted over the weekend, and many are convinced the object is extraterrestrial, including the man who shot it, Jason Swing. “It was like nothing that I’d ever seen before that's why I thought it was not of this world,” he told Inside Edition. However, it's since been revealed the object was a Goodyear blimp.
Curtis Creek Campground - Old Fort, NC - RV camping
Courtesy of Recreation.gov
Overview
Curtis Creek Campground is nestled in the mountains at the base of the Blue Ridge just minutes from the quaint town of Old Fort and less than an hour from the popular city of Asheville. Located in the first tract of National Forest land in the eastern US at the site of an old Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) camp, the campground is surrounded by old growth forests and roaring trout streams. The gravel road through the campground ascends to the Blue Ridge Parkway, providing easy access to the Mount Mitchell area.
Natural Features:
Located in rich mountain hardwood forests at an elevation of 2,000 feet, Curtis Creek Campground provides a secluded streamside setting. Curtis Creek, a popular trout stream surrounded by lush rhododendron and hemlock, runs along the east side of the campground. Old-growth forests cover the mountain peaks on either side of the valley. The Curtis Creek area provides beautiful scenery year-round, from stunning fall foliage displays to abundant spring and summer wildflowers.
Recreation:
Visitors to the campground can enjoy a variety of activities including fishing, swimming, day hiking, picnicking, and scenic driving. Curtis Creek is well known for its excellent trout fishing. Swimming holes along the creek provide wading opportunities on hot summer days. History buffs will enjoy exploring the remains of the old CCC buildings surrounding the campground. Two Forest Service trails depart from the campground. The Hickory Branch trail provides a short (approximately 1/2 mile) hike to a series of waterfalls, and longer hikes to access the backcountry area around Mackey Mountain. Mackey Mountain and the valley of Mackey Creek contain the largest unbroken tract of old-growth forest in the Pisgah National Forest. The Snooks Nose trail provides a strenuous hike to a ridge with beautiful views, eventually ending at the Blue Ridge Parkway. Many other Forest Service trails are within a short drive of the campground, including Catawba Falls and Point Lookout trail.
Facilities:
The campground provides a variety of campsites. There are three loops with 25 sites. One loop is fully accessible, barrier free and can accommodate RVs up to 35ft. A second loop features dispersed tent-only roadside sites that provide a secluded forest experience. A third loop features tent-only sites in an open grassy area. All sites include a tent pad, picnic table, lantern post, and fire ring. Vault toilets, drinking water pumps, and bear-proof trash and recycling receptacles are provided. A campground host is on site to provide visitor assistance.
Nearby Attractions:
Curtis Creek Campground is six miles from the town of Old Fort, which has a variety of restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, and medical facilities. Popular attractions in Old Fort include the Mountain Gateway Museum, the Old Train Depot, Davidson Fort, Catawba Falls, and Andrews Geyser. The campground is seven miles from the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, close to Mount Mitchell State Park. Visitors can make trips to nearby Black Mountain (15 miles) and Asheville (30 miles) to visit art galleries, shops, and restaurants.

BHTV: Rivers Link Communities across WNC
The rivers here are a continuous source of enjoyment for the people who live here. People of all ages enjoy fishing, paddle sports, and just quietly walking alongside our rivers. And these natural community resources haven't gone unnoticed by the rest of the country. Outside Magazine recently named us among America's best river towns.
BHTV: Hiking in Our Outdoor Playgrounds across Western North Carolina -
Community Information: Burnsville, NC -
BHTV: Celebrating 100 Years of State & National Parks in WNC -
Many people have worked tirelessly to protect and restore these precious resources. One of those people is Karen Cragnolin, who founded RiverLink in 1987, a group devoted to the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River.
“RiverLink is very much a volunteer-based organization,” says Cragnolin. “We have over 1700 volunteers, and they range from PHDs who help us with monitoring our fighter remediation clean-up sites to school children, to companies who have full teams on their staff who come out and help us clean the river. It's really wonderful to see the community come together, and the river's kind of the melting pot. It's where everybody meets. And it's young and it's old and it's healthy and who want to get healthy. It's people who love art, it's people who love crafts, it's people who really love Western North Carolina. The French Broad River also, not only is it great fishing and great boating and a great place to have a picnic and a great place to listen to music, because we do summer concerts on the river, but it is also the drinking water source for over a million people. It's clean, it's pristine and it's attracted breweries from all across the country.”
“I moved up here from Charleston, South Carolina, wanted to go to the mountains,” says Justyn Thompson of Southern Raft Supply and Watershed Drybags. “Western North Carolina offered lots of rivers—that's what we had here to kind of fulfill that need for me. So with that, I took a white-water kayaking class at Warren Wilson, the first year I was there, and from there I was just hooked. As you know, we're super lucky to have as many watersheds in Western North Carolina as we do. And the only place I could think that would even be comparable are rainforests, in Costa Rica and things like that. We have so much great running water here.”
“We are on the west fork of the Pigeon River in Haywood County, one of my favorite delayed harvest streams,” says Jason Van Dyke of Hunter Banks. “And we are really lucky in our area to have thousands of miles of trout water. Beautiful country. Brown trout are truly my favorite fish to catch for the sheer power of the fish. With Western North Carolina, you really have the benefit of having not only a great stocking program with the state, but the opportunity for some fantastic wild trout fishing. It's rare in the world to have this many options for fly fishing. Any direction you go from town, you can be on fantastic water.”
We are so fortunate in Western North Carolina to have such a diverse number of rivers providing economic vitality to our region and giving us a place to play, restore, and most importantly, connect our communities. For more information on the many ways there are to live here contact your Beverly-Hanks associate, or go to beverly-hanks.com.
